Butting In The Front Of The Line, Vehicular-Style

by admin on August 21, 2009

I am a childcare provider. One day, I was picking up one of my charges from his school, which was about a 20 minute drive from my home. It was a Friday afternoon, and in my city, rush hour usually starts around 3pm on the weekend. I was heading westbound on X Street towards the freeway.

Traffic was quite heavy, and we were stopped at a red light. I was the third car back, in the curb lane. Directly to my left was a large 4×4 truck. I waited patiently for the light to change, engaging in chit-chat with my charge, when all of a sudden I see a small grey truck squeezing through traffic. The guy actually drove BETWEEN my car and the truck beside me in order to make it to the front of the line. Now, this would be fine, except that there were only two lanes on this street! He showed no signs of stopping, so people in front of me were actually moving over a little as he was practically forcing them to do so. I’m a very observant person and memorized his license plate, just in case there was an accident caused by his carelessness.

The light had just changed green, and it turns out that only myself and the guy in the grey truck were entering the freeway. He was sped down the merge ramp, far past the speed limit. I was accelerating normally, and merged with little effort. All of a sudden, I had to slam on my brakes because the idiot in the truck had stopped right there on the freeway! He jumped out of his truck, waving his arms and screaming at me. I was scared, and without thinking, swerved my car into the next lane, causing two vehicles (including a bus) to swerve out onto the shoulder to avoid hitting me (not smart thinking on my part, but I was too scared to think straight at this point). The guy was still coming at my vehicle, so I just floored it and took off. My charge was hysterical by this point.

I called the police while still driving, informing them that yes, I was driving while talking on the phone, but there was no way I was pulling over because this idiot was tailing me. I gave them the license plate number. I hope they picked him up. 0726-09

Scary. The only thing I would changes is have the kid in the car call the cops, if at all possible.

Ahh, I have a story for you.

Just the other night I was driving on the M2 Motorway in Sydney, for anyone who knows the spot there is an on-ramp about half way between the Lane Cove Tunnel and the tolls heading out West. I was happily potting along in the middle lane, waiting in the traffic, when I saw a Range Rover and a Corolla both closely tailgating a little Focus. The problem here being is they were both side by side, each with half a car sticking out of the ONE lane, both fighting for the spot behind the Focus, and neither was giving in. From what I figured out, the bloke in the Range Rover had come flying up the shoulder and tried to cut off the Corolla, the bloke in the Corolla was having none of it and refused to let him in, pointing and yelling to get to the back of the queue. After about 10 minutes of them both inching along behind the Focus causing all sorts of havoc, the bloke in the Range Rover had come to the end of the lane and either had to merge or fall back, or hit the metal barrier. He nudges the Corolla. Corolla holds his spot in the lane. Range Rover nudges him again. The lady in the Focus (absolutely tiny compared to these huge cars) has nowhere to go, slams on the brakes, and both cars go smashing up the back of it, and into each other.

I can only imagine wheat they told the police.

I may be a little dopey but I don’t understand how a truck can just cut in line when the traffic is stationery at the lights. A motorbike, sure, but a truck?
