Title: Animated signature pics
Post by: wendelenn on August 26, 2011, 10:41:37 AM
What's the rule on animated signature pics? (If any?)

There is a current poster here with an animated signature pic that quite honestly is really annoying.  This person's avatar on the side is animated too but that isn't as bad.

I don't know if I can turn signatures off just for this poster, I'd hate to lose everyone else's as well.

I don't know about a rule, but you can hit the ESC key and it will freeze all animations on the page. You will have to re-do it every time you navigate to a new page with the animation, but it's better than nothing.

Also, I love that we have the same quote in our signature lines! :)

Thanks CakeBeret, my sig quote buddy!  :)

Is there a way to freeze the animation on an ipad?

I don't know.

But I do know that Esc works in IE and Flamingvixen, but not Chrome.

Well, that just figures, Chrome is all I use. :P

There are a handful of free extensions that you can install in Chrome to freeze animated GIFs - GIF Stopper (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/eaebhojnielfeoillcfnbmkgliokndkm (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/eaebhojnielfeoillcfnbmkgliokndkm)) is one; Paused! (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lineaegmeiendabencimakjagjojcegk (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lineaegmeiendabencimakjagjojcegk)) is another.

I just wish the mods would ban ALL animated signatures. They hurt my eyes and give others migraines.

Because monstrously huge sigs terribly inconvenience our members on dial-up, sig size is restricted in size to 400 pixels by 170 pixels or less.  Video sig files are not permitted.

I always assumed that they were not allowed based on the above quote, but I have noticed several avatars and one sig in particular that fits what y'all are talking about.

So did I. The flashing and weird things in some animated sigs make me feel physically sick when I'm viewing a page with them on. I can freeze them but that doesn't really solve the problem if people are ignoring the rules.

Perhaps the forum staff could install one of the SMF modules that allow signatures to be hidden. This seems like a good solution overall if the member is not breaking rules.

Isn't there one already? I don't see signatures.

Got it. There's an option to say " Don't show users' signatures".

Choose  "Profile summary"
Then choose "look and layout".
Check "Don't show users' signatures".

Save and exit

Ticia addressed the sig rules here: http://www.etiquettehell.com/smf/index.php?topic=92312.msg2244252#msg2244252

I thought about doing that, but the signatures that don't give me migraines can be really funny, clever, and help you get a bit of a sense of who the poster 'is' so I'm reluctant to.

I have PM'd posters to let them know that their signatures are causing issues for me and therefore quite possibly for others too, after trying that I just have to keep an eye out for their user name and avoid reading their posts where possible.

Dotty G, the thread you've linked to addresses the size of signatures, but the issue here is the flickering coloured animation, which is really a different issue, and possibly an epilepsy trigger as well a migraine one, I don't know I don't have epilepsy.

I agree, I actually really like the vast majority of signatures and would prefer not to hide them all because of just a few that hurt my eyes. Is there a way to hide only particular posters' signatures?

Dotty G, the thread you've linked to addresses the size of signatures,

I realize that. However, she did say, "We are not ultra strict about the sig rules" which does address this issue. In previous discussions about signature lines (including animated ones), the mods have said to report them.

I'm not denying they can be annoying - or even cause seizures - I'm just telling you what we've been told in the past. Maybe this thread will get the rules changed. But at the moment, we have to go with what we have - reporting them.

I'm not a fan of them, either.  If they move slowly, that's one thing.  Moving avatars don't bug me as much, either, because they're so much smaller.  But big, flashy, fast moving signatures, especially if they're on the page repeatedly, drive me crazy.  I'd hate to hide all signatures just because a few annoy me, though.  I really enjoy them, overall, so I'll just keep hitting esc.
