Title: Flags for your signature
Post by: Ticia on September 19, 2011, 12:11:30 PM
A lot of posters were interested in having little tiny flags in the right hand side of their signature. I figured I'd start a new thread in case anyone wants to adopt these:

This is what I have so far. I have 100 of these little flags on my computer. Let me know if you want one that's not here, I'll upload it and give you the code to use.

To use these, copy the code under the flag that you want, then go to Profile>Modify Profile>Forum Profile, then scroll to the bottom of the page and paste the flag's code into the box where it says "Signature" and then click on Save. If you have trouble doing this, let me know and I can do it for you.

Edited because I like alphabetical better than random:

Edited again to take out some flags, because it's been discussed amongst EHellDame and I that we will only be allowing location flags, as the religious/rainbow/marine etc. flags were skirting too close to our forum rules.

Thanks Ticia.... hmmmmm didn't work.. let's try that again! lol

ETA... there it is!  How do I make it an avatar without it being distorted?
Title: Re: Flags for your signature
Post by: Ticia on September 19, 2011, 01:06:56 PM
I'd have to get you another image to use as an avatar. They're tiny, so if you try to put it as your avatar, it's automatically resized to the forum avatar size, and it won't look good.

Yes, i did try that with the image and it was all distorted.

Here you go. Do you mind saving this one to your computer and uploading it to your own image sharing site like picasa or photobucket? I don't mind hosting the little tiny flags, but I'd rather keep the bigger images off my picasa. Thanks!

Ticia - not to barge in, but if people ask for any tiny flags you don't happen to have handy, I'd be happy to put together (and host) specific requests, if you wanted. :)

I had some concerns, doing flags that aren't country/state/location only, like the Christian or the Rainbow flags, but I figure that these are a way to give information about the person posting. If someone identifies with a certain flag, I don't see a problem with it. As long as people don't start fights over flags, we should be just fine.

That sounds fair to me.  And, if it's decided that we will only do flags that represent our geographical location, I will delete the others.  Thanks for making all of the links.

I think people should be able to post whatever flag they'd like to but I'd like to see the country flag in there somewhere, as that was the original point of putting in a flag in the first place.  Or at least a highly recognizable flag for the majority of posters, like the Texas flag.

Some of the flags, even country flags, are going to be too small to see much detail but at least it alerts others to the fact that the poster is not American and that etiquette/culture may be different in the country they are posting from.

Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard.  Many pirates had personalized flags, not the traditional Jolly Roger.

Ticia, for the flags that are too detailed to be identifiable in that size, is it possible to add some kind of alt tags to the coding, so that when you hover over the image with your cursor you get a text box with the name of the state/country?  I know how to do it in html (you just add alt="CountryName" to your image tag) but I don't know if the board's format allows it? (ETA: It happens when you hover over the orange "new" image next to a thread title, so I think it's supported, but I'm not sure what the coding would be.)

Or am I making things too complicated?

Thanks for all the flags, it's nice to see them starting to pop up around the board.

Is it possible to put the flag in the sidebar of our profile, rather than in the signature?  The size makes it hard to see when it's on the far-right side of the screen.

Ok, the flag idea is cute, but why do some posters have multiple flags? I might understand 2 if you're an expat (although it'd be nice if you said which is which) but how does location help others at all if you have 3 flags and no one knows where you actually live? And now state flags? Unless they're labeled, people aren't going to know that's not another country... It doesnt seem very useful in those cases.

That's what I'm confused about...wouldn't it be easier to simply say the state you're from underneath? [Or province, or region...]

And I don't get the multiple flags either...I certainly don't know them all. :D

They are really cool, though!

I thought the point of these flags was just to show your location because that can help when it's relevant to a thread. The idea was to identify you so that it becomes more obvious to those who respond to your posts that you for example are not in the USA.

I am really uncomfortable with the religious etc flags. It somehow goes against how we view religion on this board - we don't discuss it unless it is totally relevant to a thread.

I remember discussion about religious signature lines before and I don't see how this is any different?

I'm with you. This is really getting out of hand. I don't need to know, nor do I WANT to know everybody's religious background. It's immaterial. I don't  need to know your sexuality or favorite charities or the fact that you think squirrels invented badmiton. It started out as a helpful tool and now it's become some beacon of self-portrayel that just makes the location issue even MORE confusing than it was before. Because now I have to decide if those 5 flags represent natinality, location, just some country that you love, religion or sexuality and what order they all go in.

To be fair, though, many general (non-flag) signature images on this board (and indeed avatars) encompass that information too. I "don't need to know" how old someone's kids are, or how cute their pets are (by the same token, I'm sure people couldn't care less about my RWC teams either ;) ), but I'm not bothered by posters having such images in their signatures.

I'm actually quite fond of the wee flags as signature images because they're tiny & tidier than large images.

If the stacking up of various flags is causing confusion (and I can certainly appreciate how it could), then perhaps one solution would be to request that one single flag for geographical location remains right-aligned in the poster's signature box, and any others left-aligned on the opposite side of the signature box. This would make it more straightforward for posters who simply wish to quickly check where another poster is located.

I think there is a major difference between the regularly seen tickers here and declaring one's religious beliefs when they aren't in any way relevant to the discussion at hand.

And I for one really want to see your RWC teams.

I'm with you. This is really getting out of hand. I don't need to know, nor do I WANT to know everybody's religious background. It's immaterial. I don't  need to know your sexuality or favorite charities or the fact that you think squirrels invented badminton. It started out as a helpful tool and now it's become some beacon of self-portrayal that just makes the location issue even MORE confusing than it was before. Because now I have to decide if those 5 flags represent nationality, location, just some country that you love, religion or sexuality and what order they all go in.

I think you make a good point.  (I've also never seen the Christian flag combined with the rainbow one.  I like that.)

If we're doing religious flags as well, I respectfully request we add more, including but not limited to the following:

Star of David/Flag of Israel
Buddhist Flag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Buddhist_flag.svg
Pentagram
A symbol for Islam
Atomic Whirl (Atheism) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AtheismLogo.png

I thought the point of these flags was just to show your location because that can help when it's relevant to a thread. The idea was to identify you so that it becomes more obvious to those who respond to your posts that you for example are not in the USA.

I am really uncomfortable with the religious etc flags. It somehow goes against how we view religion on this board - we don't discuss it unless it is totally relevant to a thread.

I remember discussion about religious signature lines before and I don't see how this is any different?

I have to agree. The original idea was just to know where someone physically is so that we don't have to verify each time we're about to talk to someone whether we have to approach an issue from a British perspective or an American one, etc.

I'm fine with if we choose to NOT do religious flags, in fact, it's what I prefer.  But if we decide do make them available, then we need to make many options available.

I agree--a lot of people don't know every state flag (at least I don't) so please use the easily recognized USA flag plus your state flag if you must include it.  I am a native born Texan living in Maryland.  Should I have three flags?  That is unnecessary!

If we can have flags that display pride in sexuality, why not ones that show pride in our religion?

I'm fine with only country flags but I think if we move into territory where we display flags for other things, we have to make room for all things.  Can of worms.

They're all uneccessary. I just think it's ridiculous that this STARTED as an easy way to clarify location and has now morphed into this overly complicated  pride stuff that makes it even HARDER to figure out where you're from. Why couldn't we have stuck to ONE flag that shows ONLY the country in which you reside? Why can't people find some other area in their signature to pull out all the things they're proud of? And why do people feel the need to flaunt their religion and sexuality on an etiquette forum that has pretty openly said that sex and religion are not generally topics of discussion anyway?

I'm not averse to people using flags to indicate more than their country of origin, but I agree that it leads to confusion, especially when it comes to unfamiliar flags - I can be pretty sure that Ms Cellany doesn't live in Rainbowland, but I couldn't tell a Missouri flag from an Illinois flag from an Estonian flag from a Lithuanian Refrigerator Worship flag.  There must be a way to balance the two.  Maybe an agreement that a poster will either define their flag (as some have been doing), or maybe to always keep the country to the far right or top of the flags, or something.  The extra flags are fun, but they do sort of defeat the purpose.

Yeah, I don't want to see all the flags have to go away, because I think they're all really cool, but I do like the idea of having one designated "locator" flag where Ticia put it, and the others elsewhere.

Thanks, Ticia!  This seems like a lot of work, and I appreciate you doing it.   8)

I've already said that I don't have a problem with people identifying with a little tiny flag down at the bottom of a post. It's a teeny tiny flag. It's not starting a Big Major Discussion of who is Christian and who is gay and who is in the Armed Forces. It's identifying information if anyone cares to look at it, but it's not like people are waving big signs saying "Look at me! I'm a Kiwi living in Zimbabwe, but I love Ghana, too!"

I think that some of you are taking this way too seriously.

For the people who had flags I haven't gotten to yet: Sorry, I've been busy all day and hardly able to sit down for 5 minutes to myself. But I'll get to them tomorrow!

Hi Scuba_Dog.  Maybe I'm just an ignorant American but I have no idea what those flags are for and the tininess isn't helping.  I guess the best I can do is say, "Well, I know she/he isn't from the USA" which is useful information in and of itself, I suppose...

I'm guessing most people in the world would recognize a USA flag but asking us USAians to recognize the flags of other countries is just asking too much!  (I kid, I kid!)

You don't recognize the one on the right?  (The other ones are the Christian Flag and also the Marine Corps flag, which are pretty small, maybe I'll make them bigger and add a Jesus fish...)

Or....

Maybe I'll just do the USA flag with the Texas below it, as I think that was the intended purpose to begin with.  Identify where you are from, that's it-- Not where you are from, along with other things that are completely irrelevant to the forum.  It's not necessary, it's kind of silly and makes me  ::) ???

There was a method to my madness, I just think I was the only one who got it...  That happens sometimes...   ;)  Fail on my part.

I like MariaE's approach with her two flags - Denmark and New Zealand and her explanation below it.

Could we have a convention for putting flags in?  Current country of residence on the far right, with other countries that the poster identifies with to the left of the country of residence?  And then any other (non country) flags the poster wishes to identify any other affiliation on the left hand side.

What do you guys think?

Honestly, I think the flags should be representative of our geographic locations only.  Everything else, IMO, is irrelevant to the forum and really seems to be skirting around many of the well established rules.

JMO, YMMV.

No more than signatures do. I know there was a thread about religious signatures once, and the consensus (IIRC) was that as long as it wasn't proselytizing, it was allowed. I'd assume the same would go for political stances.

Just want to elaborate, I meant political as "Pro-Marines", "Supporting POW", "Pro Pirates" etc. I wouldn't assume it about party politics either. Sure, none of you (or few, anyway) would have a clue what it meant if I had a flag with a purple "B" on it, but still ;)

I haven't seen anything represented in a flag yet that I didn't already know through posting (aside from locations).  I don't think simply knowing that someone is a Christian, or a lesbian, or an atheist, or whatever, is really an issue.  Those are all things that come up in conversation here regularly.

As far as I'm aware, stating your political leanings is forbidden, period.  At least one poster was banned for having a political signature during the last presidential election (I believe it was either a donkey or an elephant, but I didn't see it myself).  It's not a risk I would take.  Even when it's relevant somehow, most posters just say Party A and Party B or something.

Just to clear this up, are you requesting any of these for yourself to use, or just for more of a general "these should be on the list of flags available"? I'm more than happy to make any flags that are specifically requested, but I don't really want to take the time to make a whole list of flags that might or might not be used. Just like I didn't put up 100 country flags, even though I've already got them on my computer. And that's a simple upload to my Picasa account, and then getting and posting the links here. For all these other flags I have to do a lot more, including searching for the image if one isn't linked to.

If it's just that, now that I've volunteered to do this, I *have* to have this list of flags so that no one feels left out... nope. I'm not going to do that.

Anyone can PM me to request a flag, by the way. Several of the flags on the first post have been requested through private message.

Also, anyone can make pretty much any flag that they want to, themselves... (baring political flags, of course) If anyone makes a flag and wants to share it, I can certainly add it to my list on the first post. Glad to do it.

Could you post instructions on how to do it? How many pixels wide & tall the image is?

The images are 16 x 11 pixels.

Here's what I do (I'm on a Mac): Right click on the image, select "Copy Image" then I open the image in photoshop, (command n, command v) shrink it to the above pixel size (command shift I), and save it to my computer. Then I go to my google account, open up picasa, upload it, tag it with the name of the flag, right click and then "View image". Then I copy the URL and paste that URL into tinyurl.com to get the tiny url. Then I post the code here in the thread.

Umm... that doesn't seem very helpful. LOL. Let me know if that answered your questions. It's not my best tutorial ever, but I've been so busy the last couple of days. Hopefully, life will slow down a bit soon.

Re: state flags.

Am I the only one who wouldn't know their state flag if it came up and dropped a dozen dressers on them?

Nope!  I seem to recall the Illinois flag having a white background, maybe.  With something in the middle?  Lets see how wrong I am!

Hey, I was right!  http://www.50states.com/flag/image/nunst019.gif  Fancy that!  I'd know the Chicago flag anywhere, at least :D

Feeling particularly silly, but just can't seem to make this work ... how would I get my little WNY right over my U.S. flag?

I'd ask for a tiny Buffalo Bills flag, but I think that'd be going too far, right?  :D

(Just kidding, of course. ;))

Copy and paste this into the line above the code for the flag:

If we're doing religious flags as well, I respectfully request we add more, including but not limited to the following:

Star of David/Flag of Israel
Buddhist Flag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Buddhist_flag.svg
Pentagram
A symbol for Islam
Atomic Whirl (Atheism) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AtheismLogo.png

That's understandable Ticia.

Could I go ahead and request the Atomic Whirl for myself? Thanks so much! These are pretty fun. :D

Please would it be possible to have the English flag, the cross of St George?

Bethalize: Would you mind linking me to a specific flag? I'm not up on my English flag history and when I googled it, I got a lot of different results. Thanks! I'll try to get this one done as soon as possible.

This is the English flag. The Cross of St George is present in both this and the Union flag.

I apologize for the delay in finishing the flags requested. My MacBook, which has all my sig files and paint shop pro on it, needs a new power supply. It won't even turn on right now. It's going into MacDocs next week for repairs. Also, I haven't had internet for the last few days, so I couldn't get on to even explain what was going on. So frustrating!

Seriously though, sorry to hear about your computer issues. It's times like that we realize just how dependent we've become on technology/internet connection.

Here's a link: http://www.50states.com/flag/nyflag.htm (http://www.50states.com/flag/nyflag.htm)

It contains images of other state flags as well.

They do when you spill orange juice on them, And then a whole vase full of water and flowers spills on them when the table literally drops out from underneath them, (long story...) and you drop them, not once, but twice. The first time it got dropped, the DVD player stopped working, the second time it got dropped, it fixed the DVD player...

The monitor stopped working about a year ago, so it is no longer a "laptop", as it has to be hooked up to an external monitor. Poor thing. I've had it for five years or so now, but it has not been treated as kindly as it should have been. I can only blame my kids for one of the accidents, the other times were all my fault.

I'm actually surprised it still works.
