Title: How much is petrol/gas where you are?
Post by: oz diva on June 12, 2012, 09:07:14 AM
We all complain about the price of filling up the car, but we sometimes forget that it's more expensive in some parts of the world.

How much do you pay? Currently petrol is about A\$1.30 a litre. (the Aussie \$ is practically at parity with the US \$).

One gas station I drove by last night was \$3.89 - I stopped at a place where it ws \$3.63 if you paid in cash. The two stations were only 10 miles away so prices can really differ.

In my town in New Hampshire, it's roughly between US\$3.41 and \$3.59 per gallon.

I tried to do the math to convert that to US dollars, and came up with \$.90 to \$.95 per liter. However, my math may be flawed.

We saw \$3.25/gal (US gallon, 4 quarts) at one station in Iowa (USA) last week. We've only seen \$4.00 once in all our travels.

Corn fuel and petrol fuel are the same price, but we get fewer miles/gallon when it is partially corn.

I just filled up yesterday and we paid \$3.26 a gallon for the cheapest type.  I looked it up and there is roughly 3.78 litres (UK litres) in a US gallon.

So that works out to about \$.86 a litre.

That changes things a bit then, as I was going on UK measures which is about 4.5 litres to a gallon.  So I think that means 1 US gallon costs almost \$8 here.

Hovering between \$1.20 and \$1.25/L here right now.  Multiplied by 3.8 L/US gallon = \$4.54 to \$4.72/US gallon.  The Canadian dollar is close to being on par with the US dollar.  Last I noticed, it was at about \$0.96 so that would increase the US equivalent price just a little.

(For the UKers:  A US gallon is only 128 ounces, instead of 160.)

Tasmania tends to the high rural mainland prices, although I don't tend to pay much attention to petrol prices.  My wee truck* runs on diesel, at the moment here it's around \$1.55 per litre.

When I buy petrol, it's for the bike, and I get the premium, so it's usually up around the \$1.78 per litre mark.

Hey, it's still cheaper than bottled water.   >:D

On vacation 3 weeks ago in the Palm Springs, CA area the cheapest regular gas was \$4.10/US gallon - at a Sam's. Elsewhere it was 4.35.

Here in SW Louisiana it's down to \$3.17 for regular. Unfortunately, I drive a diesel vehicle. (\$3.59, but gets twice the mileage of the gasoline version of my car.)

I paid \$3.05 in the southern US today for a gallon of regular unleaded. I try to combine my errands in nearest city with a big shopping plaza (Target, Kohls, ect) because the gas taxes are slightly lower and I sometimes save \$0.10 per gallon vs. buying near my home.

I needed gas while in Brockton, MA last night - it's south of Boston.  The Shell station was charging \$3.69/gal. so I turn around and filled up at the Cumberland Farms I'd just driven past.  Their gas was \$3.49.  The differences between gas stations can be significant.

The supermarket I use provides substantial discounts on gas, based on how much you spend on groceries. I have gotten several free tanks of gas this year using my discount and rarely spend over \$1.80 per gallon.  The same store also gives discounts on groceries based on gas purchases.  Win, win.

I live in the Midwest.

Yes, I always laugh when I hear Americans complaining about the price of fuel. Plus, whenever I've been over there, I've noticed that we've actually spent about the same on fuel as we would in the UK because the cars are so heavy on consumption (in general).

I've only driven in Florida in the US, which is flat, straight, paved roads pretty much all the time. I'd wager that about 90% of people on the roads could drive a normal, compact car and it would fit their needs perfectly (and yet 90% of people were in HUGE cars). And even the 15-year old micra I used to have (until about a year ago) got about twice the mileage that the car we rented in Florida did (and that was almost brand new).

Gas is jumping around a lot right now, I've seen as low as \$3.45/gallon and as high as \$3.89/gallon for regular.  I paid \$3.59 on Monday.  Which would be \$1.03/Liter

Spent the weekend in Chicago IL area, saw gas at around \$4.10 to \$4.25  for regular.

My SO has a commute in a nearby city, and drives 30 miles (47km) each way every day.  The US is so spread out that this is actually not that extreme a commute... there are people who drive fifty-plus miles each day.  For reference, I just looked it up.  M's commute is the equivalent of Hyde Park in London to High Wycombe and back every day.  Or for Sydney area Australians, University of Sydney to Werrington.

That's not all that unusual here either. Plenty of people drive 20 to 30 miles each way to work each day or further if they want to live in the countryside. Alternatively, they will take the train for up to an hour each way or even longer every day (which can cost more than £500 per month).

Colorado here... I just checked the GasBuddy website, and they're reporting lowest regular near my office at \$3.59. The lowest I saw on my way to work this AM was \$3.54.

One of the Conoco* stations near my house was \$3.59 on Monday AM. Tuesday AM, it was at \$3.73!

*Around here, they tend to be the most expensive, often by quite a bit.

Depends where you live. While the train system in France is pretty darn awesome, city/inter-city transit varies. My mom lives in a small town and she is dependent on her car to get out of town. The pay scale is better for minimum wage but not  for anything above. A French certified elementary school teacher starts around \$19,000/yr. and, after 30 years, will get between \$37,000 and \$45,000. Unemployment is terrible.

People drive fuel-efficient cars. That's a big difference. Otherwise, they just adjust their spending.

For me, a round trip is 140kms.  Open rural roads, so a relatively easy commute.  About 50 minutes or so each way.

My parents each travel around 20 miles round trip to work, and I'd say they have fairly short commutes (UK), at under 30 minutes each way.

My mum earns around £40000 p/a, of which she'll take home around £30000 after tax. Google route planner estimates that she'll use anywhere between £3-5 worth of fuel daily, depending on the fuel economy of her car.

If one conservatively estimates that she works 40 weeks out of the year, she'll spend anywhere from £600-£1000 a year on fuel for her work commute alone, around 3% of her net income.

Bear in mind the average UK salary is around £26000 p.a.  before tax, so around £20000 net. Someone with my mum's commute could therefore be spending up to 5% of their net income on petrol to get to work. It's not insignificant.

I drive about 17km to work which depending on the time of day and traffic can take anwhere from 15 to 40 mins.

My Dad on the other hand drives about 100km each way and leaves at 5:30am to avoid the worst of the traffic. A really good run takes about 45 mins, average is about 1:25-1:30 and bad traffic and a prang on the F3 and it can be hours.

My house is about 2 km from my office, 5 minute drive.  I can walk it but the way in in the morning is all downhill and the way home at night is all uphill.  So I only do the walk when I don't need to take a lunch and am only carrying my purse and I have no where I need to be right after work.

80km round trip, the majority of it is rural roads / highway.  It takes about 40 minutes each way.  Which is way better than my former 15km commute when I lived in Brisbane, took 40 mins minimum, sometimes up to 3 hours if there was a bingle somewhere - everything would slow down to a crawl.  Maybe the tunnels have improved that, it's been 3 1/2 years since I moved to Tasmania.

West Yorkshire, UK here- current fuel price for me is 145.9p/litre of diesel. I think that equates to 552p/ US gallon which is ~\$8.67/ US gallon?

I commute 13.5 miles each way to work which is 54 miles per week for work, not including other household fuel usage. I feel quite lucky to have such a short commute- while fuel is definitely expensive, a tank lasts me 3-4 weeks usually and costs ~£70 to fill depending how empty I leave it, which is a manageable amount. It usually takes about 30-40 mins, depending on traffic.

Gas prices are falling quite rapidly here.  In some places, it's expected to fall below 3USD per gallon.

This is very welcome because fuel prices usually rise during the summer vacation season and it was predicted that gas would cost more than 5USD per gallon by the end of the season.

I remember when we first converted to the metric system and gas switched to being sold in litres instead of gallons (~4.5 L to the Imperial gallon).  A gallon cost about \$0.80 at that time, I think.  My uncle said that we'd end up paying more for a litre of gas than we were paying for a gallon.  We all scoffed at him.  Not anymore.  Running around \$1.20/L this week, although with the long weekend coming up, it is probably higher now.

Now it's down to \$3.31 and \$3.41.

Back in the mid-70s, I had to take the bus to jr. high. We caught the bus at an intersection that had three gas stations.

The gas stations used to have price wars. One day, one of them would lower the price to \$.25 a gallon. The next day, another one would lower theirs to \$.24 a gallon.

I filled my car up this evening and I think I was at £1.32/litre and total cost a little over £55.  I remember when I passed my driving test £20 would fill my car up (different car to the one I have now but similar size).  I remember there being outrage when we were headed for £1/litre and everyone said it would never happen because the pumps couldn't go above 99.9p/litre, I guess they fixed that.

The station across from my office says \$3.12 today

I paid \$3.06 across town yesterday and also saw \$3.19

Again, I am in west Texas, about 60 miles from a refinery.  About 100 miles farther from me (and farther from the same refinery) it is \$ 2.93 - go figure ?

It is \$3.12/gal in Big Spring  (where we have a refinery  :'(  )  and down the road about 90 miles east in Tye (near Abilene) it was \$2.95 on 12/23.

My sister in San Antonio has gotten it as cheap as \$2.88 at a cheap place she knows, but usually about 2.90 or 2.92

I am 50 miles from you - I wish someone could explain to me how gas prices are REALLY established.  Since we are close to the refinery why is it more for us?

Beats me Redneck Gravy  ;D   Lots of time, gas is cheaper outside of Big Spring as in Lubbock or San Angelo.

We are down to 2.89/gal here. My grocery store has a gas rewards program where if you buy Certain Item X, you get 5 cents off per gallon, or if you buy 10 of Item Z you get 10 cents off per gallon. I only use it if it's something I would be buying anyway, but last week they had our favorite juice on sale and 5 cents off per gallon, per bottle. We bought 4 bottles and got 20 cents off per gallon, bringing our gas down to 2.70/gal.

\$3.35 this morning in my area of Maryland.

Bout the same where I work in Maryland.  \$3.33 at the station right off the interstate.  At home it's \$3.62.  Gotta love different gas taxes in different counties.
