Title: Stuff you can't get anymore
Post by: siamesecat2965 on July 31, 2012, 04:13:44 PM
we've all had this happen, something is redesigned to be "new and improved", or colors of your favorite lipstick are discontinued.....

What products have ether been re-worked or discontinued that you love?

Aside from perfumes and makeup, I saw today on an episode of America's Test Kitchen Pyrex has completely re-worked their traditional glass measuring cups.  Thankfully I have a set, plus an extra 4-cupper.  They were one of the first things I bought when I moved out on my own.

My other is a car.  The Volvo 240 to be exact.  My first car was a '78 245 wagon, and I loved the design.  I know they stopped making it a good 20 years ago, but I still miss it.  And I know, had I been able to keep mine, it would probably still run today!

Hydrox cookies.

Original formula Biz.  My mother used it to clean just about everything; so did I when I was just married.  Then about 20 years ago they made it "New and Improved."  It was concentrated (good), but it also had a strong scent that would. not. come. out.   So we both had to stop using it. :'(

Various things:

Cartier de Must, the original formula from the 70's and early 80's before they changed it completely.

Reeses Peanut Butter in a jar.

The old way they used to flavor doritoes.  The chips came out laden with cheese powder, and remember yelling with glee when you got that tiny nugget of powder on the bottom of the bag.

Subaru Legacy Wagon.  They still make the sedan but don't make the wagon anymore.  It used to be the Outback was basically the Legacy Wagon with heavier duty suspension but now that they've redesigned the Outback, I'm not sure they have a vehicle that meets my needs anymore. Which is too bad because I LOVE my Subaru.

Sugar Twin.  The saccharin sugar substitute.  It tastes more like sugar to me than any of the other sweeteners.  I usually buy 3 or 4 boxes of 100 a couple times a year, then carry a supply with me everywhere.  I went to the store last Monday and not only were there no boxes of Sugar Twin on the shelf, there wasn't even a shelf tag to show where the boxes are supposed to go.  I checked out two other stores that used to carry Sugar Twin and they stopped carrying it months ago.  I wonder if it was a product recall or if they simply went out of business.

Not a brand, but a product...I miss fresh, bakery-hot donuts, like Krispy Kreme or just from a good bakery. The only donuts we can get around here are from the grocery or convenience store. I love me a nice, light donut filled with cream cheese filling (there's one by my parents, so good) or a hot, freshly made glazed donut.  :(

Target used to have this store brand of the most comfortable bras I've ever worn. They were soft and fit perfectly...now they've added a push-up and got rid of the comfy kind. I don't need to push my nunnies up to my neck just to be supported.

The chocolate scented candles from Yankee.

My old '98 Jeep Cherokee. It died in an accident and the new Jeeps are too curvy.

Bath and Body Works had a line of scented products called something like "ginger spice" -- candles, lotion, body wash. I loved that scent, not too flowery, not too musky. They discontinued the whole line. That's the only product in my life I can remember actually filling out a customer comments card to try to get them to bring it back. According to the clerk, I wasn't the only one sad. They now have other ginger scents (White Tea & Ginger and Orange Ginger) but they're not the same.  :'(

Aveda lipstick in "Sheer Camilla" - the perfect shade for me

Marathon candy bars (remember the ruler printed on the package?)   This is not the Marathon bar that was sold in the UK, which was like a US Snickers bar.  The US Marathon was similar to the UK Curly Wurly (but way better  :) )

The daily moisturizers are too numerous to list.  It seems that whenever I find one that works for me, it gets discontinued.  Almay made a great one several years ago that got discontinued and replaced by their "milk" line.  Recently Aveeno discontinued their Ultra Calming SPF 30, and the 15 is a totally different product.

Surge.

I used to drink tons of it, and spent the first summer or two it was out winning a ton of free bottles from the caps. I even have a fisherman's cap with the logo!

The closest thing I found was when Mt Dew had a green lime-flavored version during the contest to pick a new flavor. I was sad when it lost.

LazyDaisy, I loved their Storm Watch candle. Then they discontinued it.  >:(  I've heard they might have brought it back, but I haven't been in one of the stores in a while ...

Nestle's Alpine White candy bar with almonds. Yuuummmyyy.

Wegman's (local grocery store chain) lychee green iced tea. I drank it all last summer; I was downright addicted to it. I hoped they'd just phased it out for the winter, but noooo ... it's gone altogether. :(  I absolutely loved the stuff.

Dr. George's Cough Syrup - My pediatrician had his own formula of cough syrup. No flavorings, no colorings but that stuff worked.

I can't remember the name but this stuff we used to soak my hands and feet in when I got secondary infections from the skin condition breaking my skin down. I could really use it right now.

B&BW's Dancing Waters.  They had the shower gel and body lotion at the crazy June sale, but they no longer have any of the EDT or body mist.

Clairol's original Herbal Essence Shampoo.  Vermont Country Store makes their own version but at $15 I'm not biting until I get a paycheck.

Yves Rocher's Mint Shower Gel.  I have a stockpile but when that's gone I hope someone else comes up with something similar.  I think they're also phasing out their Orange Blossom.   :'(

When I was growing up we lived near an Italian bakery - actually, near like 10 Italian bakeries, it was Jersey after all - but this one had a whole selection of miniature Italian parties - not just a couple of cannoli and Napoleans, no sir, a full bakery case of different pasties.  They. Were. Awesome.  Beyond words.  I miss them.

Where I live now the natives (some of them anyway) seem to think the bakeries in grocery stores are the same thing - it took quite some time to convince my native DH that this may be a cookie, but it is not a Bakery Cookie unless it comes from a bakery that does not also sell lettuce.  Preferably one that uses white boxes tied up with red and white string from a loop in the ceiling.  He finally got it :)

What's a Maypo?

I miss very few products, I guess, because I don't have a lot of brand loyalty. I do miss those Target bras mentioned upthread, even though I don't mind the padded version!

I remember liking a couple of scents at Bath and Body Works when they opened it in my town about 15 years ago, but either my nose has improved with age or their formulas have declined, 'cause I haven't liked it in years. I got some fruity lotion and exchanged it for Sensual Amber, which I then diluted with barely scented, much cheaper lotion for a scent I actually enjoy.

And thank you, nonesuch4! I have had this vague memory of Jell-O 1-2-3 for YEARS and couldn't figure out what it was called. I think we may have even made the off-brand version. Wouldn't dream of eating it now, but if you would, looks like there are lots of clone recipes out there.

Actually, it's a food that I loved, I forget what brand name it was, but it was the delicious popcorn chips (not the crappy Popchips brand either), that actually TASTED like buttered popcorn, and I was so bummed when they stopped making them. Also the Cheetos paw shaped cheezies, they were awesome!

Other than that, I can't really think of anything off the top of my head.

Edited to add Tart n Tiny's, and green Sweettarts and Shockers that used to be lime flavored (now they are an artificial green apple flavor), Pepsi Twist or Lemon Coke (sorry Lime Pepsi just isn't the same), Cherry Pepsi/Coke in Canada, Cinnamon Scope (can't find it here in Canada), Salt & Vinegar Ruffles chips, Hershey Pieces (like Smarties or M&M's but with Hershey chocolate inside), Hershey Kissables (baby candy coated Hershey Kisses),  Rice Krispy Treat cereal (in Canada),

I miss the sweet foodlike scents they used to have. I used to shop there all the time, but haven't for a while since I'm switching more to bar soaps and they have fewer and fewer of the scents I like. I went in the other day to grab some bubblebath for DD and about 90% of the scents were flowery, and most of the nonflowery scents were hand soap. Looks like I'll be going in around Christmastime (I do love the holiday scents!) and that's it.

Anyone else remember when Hunt's snack pack pudding came in metal cans?  The taste was never the same once they changed to plastic.

My mom still bemoans that Crabtree and Evelyn changed her favorite scent (Savannah Gardens).

Ooh, just thought of one. These little red, cherry-flavored fruit snacks. My mom never bought junk food so the only time I got them was when I went to my friend's house. I don't remember what brand but they seem to not be making them anymore because I've tried all the cherry fruit snacks available and they all taste fakey and sugary. These tasted like little bits of cherry fruit leather, without all the pulp.

Stick stain remover for clothes.

It was kind of like a deodorant stick.  You would use it on a stain when you were throwing your clothes in the laundry basket and it would activate in the washer.  I loved those things, since I can never remember to check my clothes over for stains as I'm throwing them in the washer.

I've been looking but I can't find them any more.

Yves Rocher used to have a line called Temps Frais.  It was mentholated so that you could splash yourself with it in the summer and cool yourself off for at least an hour going out into the heat.

The only thing close to that is 4711 Ice, which isn't that easy to find.  As lovely as it smells, its cooling effect doesn't last as long.

Bath & Body Works Rich Citrus Cream scent.

Sage scented candles.  Seems like when the candle rage went full blast, sage was the most popular scent.  Can't find it now to save my life.

Coty used to make a perfume compact called "Sweet Earth".  It had three different scents...in a solid form...and you could mix them up any way you wanted to create different scents. I believe they had a flowery scent, a spice/herb scent and a more earthy combination.  I loved those things. Saw one on ebay a while back, and they wanted like $30 for it!! I believe I used to get it for $2. Ahhh...the good ole days!

I miss (and this is a recent one) the mint scented, scrubby particle infused, Garnier dandruff shampoo. I bought some once, about a year ago, and LOVED it - went to buy it again, and no one had it. They have a fruity scrubby, and a mint non-scrubby, but no more mint scrubby. I loved that stuff!

Cheezza.

This was a frozen pizza-like food with four cheeses and no sauce.  It doesn't sound great but it was really delicious.

Back in the 1970s, Uncle Ben's made a curried rice that was good and spicy.  The modern version isn't nearly as good.

During the same period, Progresso made a hot and a sweet pasta sauce.  Both were otherwise plain tomato sauces with no chunks.  The sweet was good to use in recipes and the hot was wonderful by itself on a plate of pasta.

I don't even have a company to blame for mine.

I can't get Lady Apples in my area.  They are tiny apples (ususally could finish each in two or three bites) that are just a touch sweeter than the larger apples.   Their diminutive size means they aren't big sellers in the apple arena, so most orchards don't grow them.

We had one grocery store that would on rare occasions have them in stock (no idea where they got them from), but that store is now closed, so now I am out of luck.

For the puddin in the middle - we'd get the cooked pudding kind, mix it up, and when it was cool, we'd pour half the cake batter in the pan, then kind of carefully pour/mound up the pudding in the center of the cake pan (so it doesn't touch the walls) and then pour the rest of the batter very carefully around and over it, then bake like that.

They sell the hot oil treatment at grocery stores and beauty stores (national chains like Sally's and Ulta) in my area. Maybe you just need to keep looking. It's generally with the hair dye or perm kits, not the shampoos and conditioners.

On a similar note, I've thought about buying it but been uncertain about whether it'll work.

Are you my daughter? She asked what I was reading, and I told her the name of the thread. She exclaimed, "Has anyone said lemon Jolly Ranchers? Those were the best!"

I'm remembering more:
Our Oldsmobile Intrigue

My soft side, expandable weekender. I got it as a high school graduation gift, and an undisclosed many years later, it is falling apart. The closest equivalent I can find is an Italian leather duffel for $500, which still doesn't have the features I love.

Tato Skins Sour Cream & Onion chips

There was another snack we used to have growing up - they were in the chips aisle, they were little crunchy twists and about 2.5" long. They were so good, but it's been so long since I've seen them, I can't remember what they were called.

Rubbermaid high-sided litter boxes.  Domino insists on peeing standing up (Yes, he's neutered.)  and this litter box was the perfect height and size.  Most covered and high-sided are two pieces, letting urine get caught in the seam between top and bottom, not that Domino would ever enter that notorious cat trap known as a covered litter box.  Petco has a one-piece box, but it is very large, making washing it awkward.  I have two Rubbermaid boxes, but can't get more (I have four cats.  That's a lot of boxes.) because they are discontinued.

I also miss having a roller skating rink here in town, wishing that fad didn't go away, I can't get the hang of roller blading!

Had to add the scratch and sniff stickers,  scented markers, shrinky dinks, (which could also go under the things that sound dirty thread), cinnamon flavored toothpicks (the real strong spicy kind), Avon press on eye shadow (never tried it, but when I wanted to, they discontinued it)

You can buy the regular kool-aid, and a bag of Splenda.

I, too, mourn the loss of sugar-free koolaid.  :(

Weird question, but I buy unsweetened Kool-Aid (lemon, for homemade detergent and dishwasher soap). Couldn't you just make that and add your own sweetener?

Pudding Pops that actually tasted like pudding and had a pudding like texture, not like a glorified fudgesicle, those were delicious! And speaking of beauty products, I miss those fruit scented hair sprays, and soda flavored roll on lip smackers.

I also miss having a roller skating rink here in town, wishing that fad didn't go away, I can't get the hang of roller blading!

Had to add the scratch and sniff stickers,  scented markers, shrinky dinks, (which could also go under the things that sound dirty thread), cinnamon flavored toothpicks (the real strong spicy kind), Avon press on eye shadow (never tried it, but when I wanted to, they discontinued it)

.........to be continued, lol

I heard that using the lids from deli containers (thin plastic) are good shrinky dink substitutes.

Shrinky Dinks still exist.  We made some just a few years back.  It was a kit that made them into keychains.  So cool 8).  I'm sure they're hard to find though...

And Sophia just posted a similar thing.  The ones we got were the ones you color in and then bake - old school style.  No high-tech printing options.
I bought them in either michaels or Joann's here about 3 weeks ago :)

I think I saw 'em in A.C. Moore (also a craft store) or Michael's.  Check the scrapbooking section!

Lux dishwashing liquid.  I worked in a laundry during college, and it resulted in severe ecxema on my hands.
Even Ivory liquid will break out my hands and I can smell the lye in it.

For my wedding, I bought a package of those, and then made little name tags to go on wine glass charms.  They were quite impressive looking, plus it was cheaper than people abandoning their wine because they forgot which was theirs.

I love this idea!  If I ever get married, I'm stealing it.   :)

I like this idea, too, and I AM getting married soon.  Must run off to find them...

Remember when Ho-Ho's used to be wrapped in foil?  They don't taste right in a plastic thingy.

And when KFC used to be "Kentucky Fried Chicken", with a big bucket for a sign?  It's still a craving, but just doesn't taste the same  ::)

Stouffer's creamed chicken.  I used to boil a bag of that and put it over rice.  I don't even know how I'd find a similar recipe.

And caps-those little things we would bang with a hammer.  I understand a lot of noisy/fireworky things are out of the question, but I don't remember anything dangerous about them (but then again, I was a kid)

Stuckey's restaurants-when I was a kid, and my dad drove from Ohio to Florida, it was our first Stuckey's that really said "South".  Then one opened in Mansfield, Ohio  >:(.  Now I AM in the South and can't find any.  I think I'd kill for fried chicken and a pecan pie now.

Howard Johnson's restaurants-they had THE BEST hot dog, wrapped in a thick piece of toast.  5 Guys dogs with relish are close, but don't have the toast.

I just saw that Vermont country store has the sweet earth solid perfume that a PP mentioned.

Malibu musk perfume. I've found the body spray but it just isn't the same. Hard candy "Liquid" perfume.. I loooooved that stuff to death. Discontinued. I've seen bottles on ebay for over 100 bucks.

Pudding pops. The original ones were creamy and delicious. I'll probably remember more to add soon. Great thread!

There was a pair of shoes that I wore back in the 70's.  I think we called them earth shoes.  They were a simple oxford with very flexible soles but the heel area was lower than the rest of the sole.  They were so comfortable.  Lots of people wore them.  They were brown or black leather (suede?) with a flat seam around the toe and only had about four lace eyelets (two on each side).  Anyone remember them?  I've always had wide, flat feet and they were the most comfy pair of shoes.

Viceroy cigarettes.  I smoked them exclusively for 20 years and was heartbroken when they stopped making them.  I didn't like any other commercial brand so I started rolling my own with premium tobaccos.

Act 2 Butter Lovers popcorn.  Yes, they still make it but it just isn't the same as it used to be.

I'm not a big fan of french fries but I did like the ones McDonald's used to make.  I've bought them once since they changed their recipe.  No thank you.

Mountain Dew in glass bottles--especially with sugar instead of corn sweetener.  It just doesn't taste the same out of plastic or cans.  I don't drink it anymore.

And I miss normal light bulbs.  I don't like CFL's at all.

I forgot Kenny Roger's Roasters corn bread or muffins (whatever they were).  I think they had pieces of corn throughout.  I loved those.

When I was in high school, there was a refrigerated, cooked, chicken pot pie.  I loved it.  Haven't seen it in about 20+ years.

Whatchamacallits before they added the caramel.  I'll still eat them now, but it took me years before I'd eat them again after they added the caramel.

Cinnamon-flavored Trident gum.  I'm still on the hunt for it and, if I find it, I'll buy a couple of their shelf boxes.  I haven't seen it in years.

Lime Starbursts.  Does anyone else remember them?  They were in the original "Original" assortment, before they were replaced with, I think, strawberry.

Lime Starburst jelly beans.  I hate green apple flavor.  (Although I like the scent.  Go figure.)

Lime Lifesavers in the Five Flavors roll.  See above.

Gee, I think I see a theme, here. ;)

Good topic! We joke that all my husband has to do is like something for it to be discontinued.

I can't find Bath and Body Works Bergamot Coriander hand soap & lotion anymore :-( I luuuurved that stuff.

Also, CornNuts "improved" their BBQ flavored product about 12 years ago and I've never gotten over it.  Things I've wanted to tell them: "Improved" is subective. Don't mess with perfection.

And dangit, I miss the old formula of Cascade. I understand why they had to take out the sulfides, but the result is a lousy product.

Totally agree with the Caribou Coffee granola bars mentioned on the first page. My favorite were the mint mocha ones. It was a struggle to not eat the whole box at once.

B&BW Sugar Plum. It was a holiday limited edition scent. From about fifteen years ago. And I still make a cursory check for it every year when they bring out the new holiday scents.

Cookies from the mom and pop bakery from my hometown that closed when the owners retired. (I hear their son or grandson or something has started it back up in a neighboring town--I need to look into whether they do mail orders as I'm nowhere near there anymore...)

Excedrin.

I don't think it's gone for good but it's been recalled for ages now. I have a stash in my office and am hoarding it like crazy (and if you're worried about my safety, the recall was due to concerns like broken pills getting into the packages, and I'm not worried).

Hmmm, I googled it.  Looks like it's called "Checkers" on the east coast.  I have also seen the commercials here on the U.S. channels, but alas, there aren't any in Canada.  I will definitely dine there (Read: just eat a bunch of pies as my whole meal ;D), the next time I'm in the States though.  Thanks very much for the recommendation.  I really appreciate it!

Regarding shrinky dinks: We did some Disney ones for Jean Bean's last birthday. Found them in the toy section of Walmart.

Regarding Excedrin: I understand the company is going to have product on the shelf later this year, but they haven't been clear as to which product will be first (Excedrin, Gas-X, etc.) It's all that helps DH's headaches, and no, the generic stuff is NOT the same. It has unpleasant side effects for him. Currently he gets what we've hoarded, I get to use the generics because I don't get the side effects.

On a completely different note:

Rubbermaid high-sided litter boxes.  Domino insists on peeing standing up (Yes, he's neutered.)  and this litter box was the perfect height and size.  Most covered and high-sided are two pieces, letting urine get caught in the seam between top and bottom, not that Domino would ever enter that notorious cat trap known as a covered litter box.  Petco has a one-piece box, but it is very large, making washing it awkward.  I have two Rubbermaid boxes, but can't get more (I have four cats.  That's a lot of boxes.) because they are discontinued.

Would these work? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4217937

As for the old types of candy. My cousins found some stuff they were craving at http://www.oldtimecandy.com/ (http://www.oldtimecandy.com/)

Sugar Free KoolAid.  Gone....completely gone.  I even "talked" with Kraft on Facebook and they confirmed that it is no longer being made due to poor sales.  We always preferred the KoolAid flavors to the flavors from Crystal Light and their ilk.

This a new thing?  I bought it in Metro a few weeks ago.  If it's a new thing, I'm totally stocking up before it's all gone.

Canadian stores still have plenty. Maybe we are getting the last few (thousand) boxes of it?

Excedrin fans, try Anacin. It's just aspirin and caffeine -- what Excedrin was for years before some genius decided it needed acetominophen added. There are no generic/store brand versions, and around here they only sell it in one size (100 tablets, about $13.99), but it's worth it.

I'm another who is really going to miss her old Saturn. Mine is old enough to vote, has almost 240K miles on her and even with the AC running constantly this summer, still gets about 34mpg.

Jolt Cola.  The original stuff, not the energy drink.  "All the sugar and twice the caffeine."

RC Cola is still sold in the U.S.  I think it may be regional.  I'm from Kentucky and we buy RC all the time because it's so cheap - usually under a dollar for a two liter!  :)

This may sound odd, but check stores at Easter time. All the summer pails we sell are plastic, but the cute buckets that are sold as Easter buckets/baskets are sometimes metal. I got a metal princess bucket for my niece.

My grandparents live in the middle of Wisconsin and get RC Cola there. Only reason I know is because it's one of the few sodas they buy, so when we visit we drink RC :)

All you candy people, they're still out there! DD and I stopped at MN's largest candy store last week, it's basically this huge quonset filled with vintage candy. I saw all the kinds mentioned in this thread there. I bought some Zotz and Idaho spuds and whistle candy. Good times.

I miss birthday cake Oreos. They recently had them, but only for a month or two. SO much better than the Oreo Blizzard flavor they have out now. I usually am not a  huge fan of things birthday cake flavored, but I really dug them. Funny thing was that DH, who is our resident birthday cake flavor orderer, didn't like them as much.

I've seen the RC cola at Dollarama here in town, they have the 3/$1.00 canned pop deal, and it's usually RC

I've tried the Birthday Cake Oreos, and it's SO sweet, and to me, artificially tasting, I wouldn't get them again, but to each their own!

I miss Stouffer's Lobster Thermidor. It was a boil-in-bag product back in the late 1970s. Delicious.

I also miss an antiseptic powder that our nurse grandmother used on our various wounds. I was called B.F.I. powder, which stood for Bismuth Formic Iodide. I imagine it was probably found to be histotoxic and discontinued, but man, it sure kept nasty scrapes & cuts from getting infected.

There are several foods I miss:

Oddly enough, I miss the pizza that was served in my middle school cafeteria-a big rectangle covered with cheese and a little chunks of pepperoni.

Also from middle school, the chocolate chip cookies-the size of a saucer, always hot from the oven and still almost-but-not-quite done, very melty and gooey.  Yum!

Hershey's Cookies and Mint candy bars.

Speaking of school food -- I hated a lot of the food served at school when I was in the LA Unified School District.  However, the one thing I always really liked and have found myself missing for years is the burritos they used to serve.

When I went to high school in San Diego, they had weird burgers where, instead of them being two split buns with meat in between, the meat was completely encased in the dough then baked.  I really liked their BBQ beef burger (sandwich?) and the cheeseburger.

Anyone remember when Oreo had it's own ice cream "line" (all cookies and cream ice creams, just the ice cream flavors were different).  I used to love their chocolate ice cream with Oreo cookie bits (I think they are selling it now again and touting it as a "new" item, which I find really odd since it was around about 20 years ago).  There was also vanilla and mint, I believe (I think there were other flavors, but I didn't eat them).

See above.

Gee, I think I see a theme, here. ;)
And lemon, in all of those.  They should have kept lemon and lime and gotten rid of the fake orange flavors.

Lifesavers also used to have whole rolls of the different fruit flavors.  I remember lemon and cherry and tangerine (much better than orange) but I think cherry are the only ones left.

You can get Fizzies at Amazon.  They were made with saccharine back in the day but now they're made with Splenda.
I think it was cyclamates rather than saccharine, since they disappeared about the same time.  I can't taste saccharine as sweet, instead it's horribly bitter, but Fizzies were definitely sweet.

I just keep thinking this every time i see the title to this thread, so, I'm going to say it....A Woody Woodpecker Kazoo!  My sister ordered one with cereal box tops for probably 25 cents when we were kids.  (She never did get it.   >:()  http://www.captainkazoo.com/backroom-2.html

It could be lying behind some post office filing cabinet, waiting to find it's way to your sister.

Hey, it could happen :)
This is true!  My grandmother probably complained that I didn't write to her, when I had, and then 11 years later I found my letter in a box of papers, stamped, but unmailed.   Sorry Gramma!

The oldies but goodies here will remember this.

Lepage's glue in a bottle.

It never worked!  At least for us.  The rubber tip would clog up and dry.

Body Shop peppermint body wash

B&BW Cucumber Melon -- they brought it back for the sale but in limited products and it's probably gone again now.  It's my best friend's favorite scent so I got her a bunch for her birthday in July.

Lands End had a style of jeans that fits me wonderfully and they stopped making it! GRR!  This has happened to me multiple times with jeans, the last memorable being a dark-wash trouser from Eddie Bauer that was a test run.

A more recent annoyance: Herbal Essences "None of your Frizzness" Shampoo and Conditioner -- smells so good, and I haven't found it after the one time I bought it. (And why do all the other shampoos & conditioners for curly hair have to have lavender and/or other super-flowery scents? I don't want to be allergic to myself!)

That reminds me.  Land's End used to have these great drawstring knit shorts.  They were a thick-ish fabric and they would flare a bit like a skirt.  I loved those things!  My husband and I even had an argument about them once.  He somehow decided they were his workout shorts, and used them for several months.  He argued with me when I found them in the laundry and confiscated them back.

Ken Rosewall endorsed sneakers.   They were a bit difficult to break in, but once you did so they were sooo comfy.  Plus for some reason they made my feet look tiny.   Alas, they changed the manufacturer and they weren't so great.

Then they quit making them altogether. :(

There was a set of shower gel/bubble bath products called The Spanish Bath that Blanche gave me ages ago.  One was "Flores de la Noche" which she gave me because the name sounded mysterious.  It was delightful, as were the other two or three.  Unfortunately, brands in this product category don't last long anymore.

Yes! I hate that they got rid of this. They have a coconut lime version, but it's just not the same - the verbena added something.  I'm getting kind of exasperated at BBW because they keep changing their scents.

The problem is we're not their target audience.  I think they target 18-24's who haven't developed a lasting craving for any particular scent.  I love classic scents and lament that so few of the latest ones are that.

O, I feel so old -- so much of the stuff mentioned in this thread brings back my childhood and teen years.

Let's see: I miss Clairol Ultress hair color, which made my hair shiny but didn't dry it out. And Love's Wind scent from the early 1980s. I tried to find it via Web search but succeeded only in landing on a site of other people also seeking various Love fragrances (Misty and Rain both seem to have a fan base, too) and after 37 pages of "O, I loooooved Love's Wind scent!"
I gave up. Maybe someday.

O, and here's one that probably only people born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio will recognize: I miss Hough cakes.

Yes, I know you can still get them.  But plastic is NOT the same as paper.  The sugar hit flowed so nicely out of paper; it always seems to stick to the dang plastic.

Not that I eat them anymore, but still, it's the principle of the thing!

Oh, and if you are on the west coast, you get the ever so lovely OnTrac. You get the confirmation number, they claim they delivered in 2 days, but you don't have the package. It then shows up a few days later. So forget about taking the day off work to stay at home for delivery, it won't be there. And they'll make the status: Delievered so you can't track it any more, but you still don't have your stuff. I demanded to know if I could specifically request a carrier and they said they could not. I said fine, then I chose never to order from them again because I cannot afford to take off a week from work just to wait around for the packages. I had tried to have stuff delivered to my husband's workplace, they did the same thing, claiming the package had been delivered at SEVEN THIRTY at night, two whole hours after my husband's workplace had CLOSED!! The stuff showed up two days later. Umm, I thought I was paying for 2 day delivery...

I had this happen and 20 increasingly irate phone calls and countless emails later, I FINALLY get someone from Amazon in this country, not reading from a script who refunded my money. I was so angry, I told them I would never, ever order from them again if they insist on using a carrier that lies about its delivery dates. WHY should I pay 75 bucks a year for 2 day delivery when I am not getting my stuff in two days and I can't track my packages because the service LIES?? I went to Amazon's forums and saw dozens of pages (now hundred of pages) in a thread about how their "Prime" service just sucks. It's a shame they are ruining their good reputation, using sub par delivery services. I won't order from them again, it's not worth the aggravation.

I guess Amazon has it for sale. I just can't bring myself to order gum from the internet and have it shipped to me.

I'm a fan of the Clove gum.  Apparently the company rotates making their 4 flavors (Clove, Black Jack, Teaberry and one other) every 4 years.  I'm currently seeing Teaberry in stores.  Whenever I see Clove I stock up.  So keep an eye out - Black Jack should be coming around soon.

A short digression:

Fragrance companies today exist on their ability to create new brands to attract new customers.  Once the customers get that the new scent will have a limited run, they stockpile it against the day it's pulled from the market.  Usually around the same time said company puts out a new one that attracts another segment of the same target audience and the cycle repeats itself.  Typically about three or four years later the same company releases a discontinued item under a new name and packaging.  The life cycle of bargain scents has gotten shorter and shorter in the last ten years or so.

Avon, Yves Rocher, and Bath & Body Works all do this despite their differing distribution methods and target audience variation, with B&BW having the shortest life cycle of most of their scents.  Victoria's Secret probably also does it (which is probably why I once stockpiled Jeweled Citrus).

Check ebay for discontinued ones and only buy something that hasn't been opened.

I once had a package "out for delivery" for over 24 hours.  I called Lasership, and was told that the driver hadn't finished his rounds the day before, so it had been returned to the warehouse.  I told them that if it wasn't delivered that. day. I was calling the police and reporting the merchandise as stolen.  I then called Amazon and told them the same thing, but they told me that they didn't have any control as to what was sent by UPS and what was sent by local courier.  It was delivered that day, but I'm still seeing red.  I. hate. Lasership.

Body Shop "Green Apple" bath/shower gel, and foam bath.

They did revive it for a short period about a year ago, and I laid in a stock, but it is getting low alas. The bathroom smelled sharp and crisp, like an apple.

And when I tried to get Tea Tree Oil soap from Body Shop the assistant said people prefer facial washes, but I like soap for my hands.

There used to be a shop called "L'herbier de Provence" in Camden, London UK, and they did two perfumes, Vervaine and Citron Vert, both lemony, but the firm closed down.

I get them at WalMart.  Love them!  If I don't treat the stain immediately I will forget about it until I've dried it in!

Haven't read the whole thread but if youe  in Texas I may be able to help you on this!!

I'm in Virginia, but I thank you all the same for the simple reassurance that somebody somewhere still grows them!

I admittedly have no idea where in Virginia you are, but if you mean Pink Lady apples - I googled "Pink Lady apples, Virginia" and came up with a list of pick-your-own orchards that still grow them.  I understand they do have a later and shorter growing season than other types of apples, but my DH also loves them so we keep a sharp eye out.

One listing is http://www.virginiaapples.org/pick-your-own/nelson.html

Do you mean the spray that had the fake peppermints in the bottle or the earlier one with the fake ice cubes?  I thought those were so cool.

neither this was a holiday thing a few years back, it smelled like walking in a field of peppermint and was pink in color. Last two years I have not been able to get it

Clearly your Google-foo is better than mine.   I actually visit Drumheller's Orchard (listed the site you posted) annually, which seems to be one of the two orchards on the list which doesn't offer Lady Apples.

I'm actually not entirely certain that the Lady Apples  that our one store supplied were Pink Lady apples or not. I seem to remember a more yellow/red separation in the apples, but that could have been Pinks which just grew in more yellow that year.

Thanks for the list!

<update for benefit of later readers - it is confirmed that the Pink Lady apples mentioned here are not the same as lady apples I was missing. But CuriousParty has provided a link in her next post which hopefully will still help me find that kind of lady apple.>

You should be able to find the All Dressed chips in any grocery store over the border.  They will be Ruffles style (rippled) but you can get them.  Costco carries boxes of the small bags, too, or at least in an assortment with other flavours.

I've seen the MacIntosh in dollar stores and candy stores.  I quit buying it because I was afraid of wrecking my teeth!  :)

The Google foo thing is a bit of a sickness, really - I've spent much of my life doing some type of research for something, so now when questions arise there's an almost compulsive sense for me of "Well now that's an interesting question...I bet I can find out the answer."

With that said, I was curious about the Pink Lady v Lady apples question, so I...looked it up. Turns out there is a very comprehensive website that gives ALL KINDS of info on various apple varieties, including, yes, Lady apples which are indeed different from Pink Lady. Some of the info is where the apples are grown and where to buy. There's one farm in VA.

http://www.orangepippin.com/apples/lady

And now, having gotten way too involved in someone else's apple search :) I'm going to pretend it was research for the upcoming pie making season and go sit quietly in a corner.

I subscribe to a lot of home decor magazines and I like them all, but one that I liked the most and really miss is Domino. It had such a unique, wonderful approach, and was truly special. I also miss:

TJ's Passion Fruit Ice Cream. It tasted exactly like the fruit: tart, sharp, clean. But, alas, I guess other shoppers didn't like it quite as well.

Those Silver Dragees (edible silver balls) you could put on top of sweet baked goods. You can't buy them in California or even have them shipped to California addresses any more. (Stupid lawmakers.)

Try one (or several) farmer's markets in your area. We get Lady Apples and all kinds of heirloom varieties there that don't show up in the grocery stores. Many of the heirloom varieties have very short seasons so make friends with the apple vendors (who should be showing up just about now) and ask them what varieties they may carry later on.

I think you can buy Dragees at Michael's craft stores in the cake decorating aisle.  I don't think they are the same metal BB consistency, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them there (and in different shades!).

My husband does a lot of business in Nevada, so he'll visit a cake shop there that sells them and bring them back for me.  There are so many things that can't be bought in California anymore that are still available  in Nv that he often goes with a shopping list.

FYI, there is no law in California that prohibits the sale of dragees. It's all the work of one overzealous lawyer from the North Bay who went around suing people over some perceived, but not actual, risk and now no one is willing to take the risk of selling them.

I've been trying to find some sifting cat pan liners, since Max prefers the scoopable litter.  I understand that one brand discontinued one type and are coming out with some that are thicker, due to customer complaints, but that isn't until January.  Plus, since he's a large cat he needs a litter pan the size of a bus, and I'm having a hard time finding liners that fit the one I have.  I've found some that are just a little too small and I'm using those for the time being, but I'd love to find some that actually fit.

I miss old landline telephones.  Corded ones that you could cradle under your shoulder while you did the dishes without having buttons that your chin would hit and accidentally disconnect a caller.   I loathe cordless phones, speaker phone and plug in headsets.  Same with cell phones.  Something about the way the speakers and recievers work block out the pauses and breaths that help a conversation flow naturally.  Since you can't hear them, both callers tend to start talking at the same time and over eachother, or the tone of the conversation just seems to lack something.  Plus, being locked into a set distance from the phone made you focus.  Now with wireless/cordless people wander physically and mentally and aren't always 'in' the conversation.

I still have a corded headset and you can still get them if you keep looking.

My college buddy's ex was once on the phone with a furniture store whose customer service person told her to call back on a corded phone for security reasons.

I also think that corded receivers are more reliable and have better sound quality because they don't depend on a signal.  I don't care if anyone calls me old-fashioned over this.

I have a corded landline at my house, and DF and I also have one in the new house.  It's not hard to find one (I bought both of them through Amazon).  We prefer to have at least one corded phone for our landlines in case something ever happens with the cell phones and/or electricity.

It's not that you can't buy a corded phone, it's just hard to find one without buttons on the handset -- so you can hold the phone with your shoulder up to your ear without mashing random buttons.

OMgoodness! I remember that stuff, and you're right, it was great. Thanks for the memories! :)

When we first moved into our house, we had a huge power outage.  In August.  In 100+ degree weather.  My DH's expensive, sophisticated phone system was useless, so I went to my mom's and brought over her old, beat-up corded telephone.  I'm afraid I was quite the SS during that time, I used that phone to pester PG&E non-stop until it was fixed (4 days later).

Rolaids soft chew antacids--I hate  tums and that seems to be all that's available now

Rolaids were recalled in 2010 because foreign objects were turning up in the manufacturing process. I was not pleased, because those softchews were the only thing that worked on my middle-of-the-night heartburn attacks.

However, I recently found store-brand antacid softchews in my supermarket, and they seem to work just as well. This was a Hannaford supermarket, which is based in the Northeastern U.S. Judging by your username you aren't from here, but look around. What I found came in a zip-lock pouch similar to what Hall's cough drops come in, rather than a roll. Good luck! (If you're desperate, PM me and maybe I can send you some.)

Clarke's Spaghetti Sauce  :'(

When I was a kid growing up in Southern Ontario in the late 60s early 70s, it came in a long cardboard box with a can of the sauce in one end and, visible through a cellophane window, the dry spaghetti in the other. It was enough to serve two adults and two kids.

Eventually they changed to selling it only by the can, sans spaghetti.

Then one day my Mom couldn't get it anymore. There was one store in town that would order it in but only if she bought a whole case. Which she did until they finally announced that even they couldn't get it anymore.

Last I saw of Clarke's was in the fall of 1989 in a grocery store in Etobicoke (Toronto).

Staples has them, and I think they appeared at the local 7-11 recently too. I want to get one and set my cell to a vintage ringer. At parties and work gatherings I'd have someone call me; I'll pick up my huge Mary Poppins bag, riffle through it, and pull out this vintage-looking phone and answer. Bonus points if I can put something else in the bag that sounds like a dial up modem and attach it to a tablet.

No, I won't really do it, but it does make me giggle to think about.

City directories.

They were a great record of who lived where, when they lived there and their occupations.

It depends.  Some cities in Canada still produce them but it depends on the companies who publish them and the demand for them.  They are absolutely invaluable to me for work and in about 10 years we are going to be in trouble because of the growing data gap.  Toronto stopped publishing them 2001.  Hamilton has them up to 2011.  It's hit and miss.

-Cheap headband-style headphones. I used to be able to get these so easily at places like Rite-Aid and CVS. I'd buy a pair for five dollars, they'd work for a few months before the headband snapped or an ear broke off, then I'd walk the short distance to get a replacement with no fuss. I LIKED it that way. Nowadays, all I see in the headband style are super expensive headphones that I would never wear on my walks. Not only is the sound TOO good and therefore distracting, I'd rather not be mugged. I did try getting a pair of 30 dollar headband headphones since it was the cheapest the store had, but those lasted shorter than the old pharmacy ones did. Now the only cheap portables I see in stores are earbuds, which I absolutely loathe. They hurt and they fall out. I did manage to find the kind that clip onto my ear on eBay, and those work well enough, but they tangle very easily. Why'd they have to go and fix something that wasn't broken?

-Lemon Coke/Pepsi Twist. Someone upthread mentioned these, and I have to agree. I do sometimes add a lemon wedge to my cola when in restaurants, but it isn't the same.

-Berries & Cream Dr. Pepper. Goodness, I loved this stuff. I don't even know what I would compare it to. I think it existed for a summer, and that was it.

-Banana Oreos. I love chocolate and banana! I saw them once, bought a box, devoured it, and then never saw it again...

-Ignition Dance Pads - this was a mat-style controller for Playstation 1/Playstation 2 that you used with your feet - it was meant for dancing video games like Dance Dance Revolution and In The Groove. I had three of these mats, but two of them died recently and I'm down to one. I know that the PS2 is a dinosaur by now and I should have expected them to stop making controllers for it sooner or later, but the idea that I'll soon be unable to play my beloved dance games HURTS. How am I supposed to exercise now?! I still occasionally see cheaper dance controllers in places like Five Below, but the cheapy brands are utterly worthless. This is definitely a hobby where you want to pay good money for quality, and it seems as if I can't anymore.

Do you have a Family Dollar near you? They sell three-packs of headphones for $5. One pair is the traditional headband kind, the other is the headband-less kind that clips over your ears but the phones are the same size as the headband type. The third is the clip-over with small earbud-sized phones that sit just outside the ear. They're pretty sturdy for being so cheap. And if you don't like wearing the non-headband kind on your walks, you can use them elsewhere (do you listen to music at work?) or give them away.

I was going to say, I know a couple soapmakers that sell tea tree products/may be able to make you tea tree hand soap...but it looks like you're in the UK, and I'm in the US.

To the poster who posted about dance pads...I have one in my basement for the PS2 (not sure the brand but I think it's a better one, and it's barely used)--PM if you're ever interested. I didn't use it much, and it's not going anywhere ;)

Nabisco Bacon flavored crackers. They tasted nothing like bacon, but darn it they were good! If I had known they were going to discontinue them a few years ago I would have indulged my love of them a lot more often!

And a favorite from my childhood into my late 20's: Hardy's Peanut Brittle. Made by a local man in my hometown only during the winter holiday season. It was the BEST BRITTLE EVER! When I lived in other countries my Mom would mail it to me in care packages. Jim, the owner, was tickled pink that I wanted it shipped to me and always gave her free bags to send. Sadly, Jim has passed away and it doesn't appear that his family wanted to keep up the tradition. I miss it so.  :'(

Do you have a Family Dollar near you? They sell three-packs of headphones for $5. One pair is the traditional headband kind, the other is the headband-less kind that clips over your ears but the phones are the same size as the headband type. The third is the clip-over with small earbud-sized phones that sit just outside the ear. They're pretty sturdy for being so cheap. And if you don't like wearing the non-headband kind on your walks, you can use them elsewhere (do you listen to music at work?) or give them away.

I don't know of any Family Dollars or equal level stores around here. Closest to that style I can think of is Five Below, and even all of their headband headphones are the kinds that cover the ear completely, which I don't like walking with. I feel like they block out sound too much. Maybe a Five Below that's not in the middle of nowhere would have better selection, but since that's where I live... ah well. I have a pair of Beats headphones for home use - 300 bucks but worth every penny, those things are my darlings - but no way would I leave the house in them. I do have the headband-less clip ones and I like them, even if I still miss the headband ones... though even for the clips, I needed to go on eBay. Whatever it takes, I guess!

Lands End used to have women's fleece crewneck tops.  I loved them.  They were comfy and came  out of the dryer looking great.  I've been wearing them for years and years.  I was planning to get some new ones this year and now I understand that they have been discontinued.  LL Bean has scrunch necks and vee necks but it's just not the same.  I want my crewnecks!

Fetish Perfume
Crystal Pepsi (loved that stuff)
GLO jeans in the Flame style... who in the world decided that skinny jeans were awesome?
POD on all things Lime flavored and Coconut Lime Verbena... hoping they will bring it back, or I will have to go all sorts of Amazon.

On a brighter note, I just picked up a box of Count Chocula and Boo Berry. I <3 Target for the Halloween cereal!

I can't remember the brand name, but there used to be this amazing honey mustard based bbq sauce that I absolutely LOVED.  I'm allergic to tomatoes, so this particular sauce was an awesome fine for me.  It disappeared suddenly from the store shelves about 3 years ago.  I still haven't found a good replacement.

I may have mentioned this before, but Jack in the Box used to sell burritos.  They were just as addictive as their tacos.  30 years later, I still pull up to the JIB drive through and want those burritos.

I'm reminded of a very brief period of time (blink and you miss it), when Burger King had a meatloaf sandwich.  I remember liking it.

I miss Wendy's old french fries.  The new ones are dry and salty.  :P

Shower soothers. They are these tablets you'd put on the floor of the shower. The water and steam would release the stuff you'd breathe in to help clear congestion. Can't find them anywhere local now.

I had never heard of these, so I went looking online, and you can also make sometime similar, if you're so inclined.

Old London Waffle Cheese Crackers.  They don't make them anymore and apparently there's some substitutions floating around, but not the real thing.  They were round waffle shaped crackers with some kind of fake cheddar cheese inside and I was addicted to them when I was little.

I also miss fruit flavored Good n Plenty.

Tide Lavender and Vanilla Simple Pleasures Laundry detergent- and the matching Downy Lavender and Vanilla Simple Pleasures Fabric Softener. My laundry smelled so good. And the scent lasted in my drawers.

Tide came out with Tide Lavender Touch of Downy. Downy came out with Lavender Serenity and a Spring Lavender.

The products they have rolled out to replace the scent isn't the same- they both replaced it with a Lavender scent, but no vanilla. The vanilla made the scent so nice and warm and comforting.  :'(

Someone up thread mentioned LifeSavers. When I was in Junior High School 25 years ago (gasp!) they had root beer flavored LifeSavers. They actually tasted like real root beer. I loved those!!! If anyone has seen those sold in any of those old time candy stores, or outside of the US, I might actually have to visit you.

I remember when I could get a whole roll of my favorite flavor, wild cherry Life Savers.  Maybe your root beer Life Savers are with my cherry Live Savers.  *sigh*

Along with the butter rum and butter cream (creme?) ones.

RIP  Greenies Duck and Pea Pill Pockets for Cats.

Koa, who is allergic to both chicken and fish among other things, loved them so much, she got duck pill pockets for treats.  The other three cats liked them as well, and of course, they were great for giving Koa her steroid pills when the itching gets too bad.  When I couldn't locate a supply of Duck and Pea pockets even on the Internet, I wrote to the company.  The answer:  despite enthusiastic fans, there simply wasn't enough nationwide demand to continue making Duck and Pea Pockets for cats.  I'm going to try the dog version, assuming it isn't discontinued as well.  I haven't tried the salmon version, but nobody particularly likes the chicken pockets.

Bootsie doesn't like pill pockets.  She has impaired kidneys and needs to take a small pill daily.  She doesn't like having a pill shoved down her throat.  I see her point.  I don't think I would like that either.  So I bought her pill pockets in her favorite flavor: Chicken.  'Cuz she's a chicken eatin' kitten.  ;)

I guess the pills are bitter because she spit them out.  This surprised me because I didn't think she had enough teeth left to chew.  I thought she was gumming her food and basically swallowing it whole.  I tried getting her to eat the pill pockets without pills, planning to fool her again.  Not a chance.  She won't even eat the pill pockets when I break them up into small pieces and there is clearly no pill hidden within.  I think that, if she had been introduced to the pill pockets without pills in them, they would be her favorite treat.  Now the trust is gone ...

The pill pockets never fooled my babies.  Unless the vet says you can't do it with this particular pill, my recommendation is to crush it with a mortar and pestle, add some chicken broth, and squirt it in her mouth with a syringe or eyedropper.

A heating pad that doesn't turn itself off every twenty minutes.

I have chronic back pain, sometime back spasms.  The only thing that really helps is a heating pad.   If I have spasms I have to use it for hours at a time. Heating pads used to heat up and stay at the chosen temperature until you turned them off.  The only new ones I have found turn off after twenty minutes whether you want them to or not.  The only way to avoid this is to turn the pad off and back on before the twenty minutes are up.  If you forget to do this, you must get up, unplug the pad and plug it in again to restart it.

I know this is a safety feature designed to keep people from falling asleep and getting burned but ... When one is in the throes of back spasms, one does not want to move.  If I miss the twenty minute mark and have to get up and pull the plug out, etc., it's gonna hurt

I wish could find one that wouldn't shut off.

Does anyone remember when some of the large grocery stores had little carts for kids (well, Iíll say girls only because I never saw a boy using one) could shop alongside their mother?  I remember making a list and shopping with my mom.

Funny books (thatís what we called comics)
Animal crackers
Chocolate milk

And I paid with my piggy bank money.  :)

I canít remember when those little carts disappeared.

One of my local stores still has those tiny carts! Too little for my daughter, but the toddler boy is starting to learn the use of them. He selects whatever he wants and makes "vroom" noises when we move. I have to sneak an amazing amount of sugary stuff out of that cart when he isn't looking, but it keeps him busy.

:)  Too far away and I'm a lot bigger now!  But I recall other shoppers and the cashiers smiling.  It was also agood way to allow little kids to learn how to interact with the cashier, how to pay for their purchases , count change, etc.

I have been using two different heating pads since I was in a car accident in October.  Both of mine do turn off after 20 or 30 minutes.  But all I have to do is use the controller to turn it off and then back on again and they work for another 20 or 30 minutes.  I've never had to unplug them.  One of mine is about 5 years old, and the other one I got in October.  They both different brands, but work essentially the same way.  I wonder why yours is so different?

Have you tried a heated mattress pad?

I was going to suggest this or a foot warmer.  I bought this (http://www.walmart.com/ip/21596957?adid=22222222227015603550&wmlspartner=wlpa&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=&wl3=21486607510&wl4=&wl5=pla&veh=sem) to keep my feet warm, and it's just like a big heating pad that doesn't turn off.  It has three temperature settings so you can adjust it however you like.

I don't recall ever seeing them in NYC, but our stores are small enough so those would be a serious safety hazard.

Iím thinking safety must have been one of the reasons the tiny carts were discontinued (in most places) a long time ago.  Kids + carts can be a bad combination.  I had to use the large industrial size dryer at a laundromat awhile back, and there were kids in there running wild with the carts that people use to transport clothes from washers to dryers.  (The mothers werenít paying any attention.)

Also, most stores have displays, etc. in the aisles.  Itís hard enough to get around.

The old albuterol inhalers.  I guess those little buggers were responsible for killing the ozone.  Now the inhalers use a different delivery system that just doesn't work as well.  And you can't get generic, so they're expensive.

Last time I checked, albuterol nebulizers were still available.  Would that be a viable option for you?  I know that a nebulizer isn't the same as an inhaler.

THIS! I had a coworker try to buy my spare when they finally ran out at all the pharmacies in town. NO!  I need it!

Long gone now, and the new ones just land on my tongue, so it takes 4-5 puffs to get enough in my air passages, which means that they run put much quicker, which means I have to buy refils 3x's more quickly, which means more $ out of my pocket.

Planter's cheesepuffs.  Argh, those were delicious!

Now, its Burger King's Sweet Potato fries and Sweet Potato Curly Fries.  I only got them thrice, because everyone I went out with hated sweet potatoes and kind of poopooed on me getting them when odds are I wouldn't finish it.  I think my BF felt a little guilty over that, since he tried to get them a few days ago and apologized that I couldn't get more of them. :-\ They were so good!

The Domino's liquid brown sugar. When my brother and I were younger, my mom got it put into cookies and stuff. She never really was able to, for once we tasted it, it went onto pancakes, waffles, french toast, etc. It was so yum.

Hershey's chocolate milk powder. Their syrup, and also Nestle's powder just isn't the same.

Del Taco's steak and cheese burrito.

The drink vending machine that into a little cubicle in front of the machine a cup would drop down, followed by ice, and drink choice. Then you'd open the little door and retrieve your beverage, it was so cool. My brother and I loved finding those in the snack areas of motels when on vacation. We always wanted to see it mess up and do things out of order.

Anyone else remember when Hunt's snack pack pudding came in metal cans?  The taste was never the same once they changed to plastic.
And who remembers cutting your tongue licking either the lid or the inside of the can to get the last of the delicious chocolatiness?
Oh yay, I'm not the only one! Snack Pack did taste better in the cans than the plastic. ;D

Come to think of it-- Irish Blend Monster.  It's likely a regional only thing, but we used to find it all the time a couple years ago.  Now I can't find any, and I'm hooked. :( The only time I asked, I asked a gas station that's had good service.  They said they would if we were willing to buy a few (re: not the whole flat, but at least enough to make it worth their while), and they did.  And it never showed up, we went there for a month looking afterwards.  They kept saying it was delayed.  Aw well, it's probably better for my girlish figure anyways.

Also, Orange Moxie and Leninade.  See, girlish figure.

Shoo, after I read your reply I experimented with my controls.  It turns out if I hold down the weird toggle switch on the heating pad for several seconds it does turn off(!) and then I can turn it right back on again without getting up and pulling the plug. I was just tapping it before, not holding it down.

Albuterol the medication is still in use in the inhaler.  It's the delivery system in the canister inhalers to get the puff of medication into the lungs that causes the problem.  Apparently the old one released chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere, so they're using something else and it is not effective.  Many, many complaints since they implemented this.  Plus, since it is still fairly new, you can't get generic. With insurance I could get the old inhaler for $7, but now it costs $40.  That was my insurance.  Some people may have to pay more/less.  Only people with really bad asthma or lung issues use nebulizers, and that's a treatment you do once or twice a day, not something you can throw in your purse and use whenever you need it.

Gebhardts Chili Quick. It was the best seasoning IMO for making chili. It came in a can and you added 1/4 cup to your 1 lb of meat and other chili ingredients and that was all. So good. It was made by a small company in Texas and it closed. My mother and I have tried to find the receipt online but can't. I wish it was a bigger brand so those folks who figure out all the restaurant/food recipes would do this one. I 'd even sacrifice my last bit of Chili Quick for the research.

I had noticed that Texmex.net had stated they have replicated the Chili Quick product.  I have no idea how close it is to the Gebhardt's original.  When I lived out of state and had a hard time getting Gebhardt's Chile Powder, I used their mail order service frequently.

They're usually found in Mexican markets here, along with a "King" themed Nestle bar that a friend of mine says is identical.

Chocolate mint cubes by Haigh's.  (A South Australian chocolate company)

I was addicted to them but about 8 years ago they discontinued them and made spearmint cubes instead which I don't like.  I was so disappointed!!  A friend of mine worked at Haigh's and a few months after they discontinued them they found a big bag of them out the back.  She very kindly bought them for me and I savoured them!!

Seriously. We needed some, so off I go to buy a pack. It becomes apparent that the shop I went to doesn't sell them anymore. I go to the next shop, and the next. None sell them anymore. They all offer tissues with wan smiles. Over the past two months, I have literally been to every shop in my town (excepting only the aquarium place), and not one sells handkerchiefs.

Affordable summer bedspreads.  We have a few Indian cotton ones but they're at least 30 years old and, frankly, we're getting tired of them.

Places like the Vermont Country Store have the styles we like.  However, they're ruinously expensive for what they are.  so much for Yankee thrift.

I don't know how small your town is, but the only places we find them are menswear sections of department stores, or occasionally at Ross/TJ Maxx/Marshall's. Target will have them in gift boxes at Christmas sometimes, too.

We use them a lot, but we don't have a ton around at any given time.

On a whim, I googled it to see if there was some off chance someone somewhere might have a box for sale.  To my astonishment, I found it at Bigelow's own website under the gluten free teas.

I am ecstatic!  It looks like they brought it back after so many people requested it, but I haven't seen it in a store anywhere.

Soft plastic squeaky dog toys.

When Molly was a wee pup (a very wee pup, she's 15lbs full grown) her first toys were cheap little soft plastic squeakies purchased at one of our Big Two supermarket chains, mostly in the form of sea creatures.  They were small enough and soft enough that her little mouth didn't get hurt chewing them, they squeaked very loudly (annoying, but it got her attention when she wandered off in the paddock) and were tough enough to last a good few tug-o-war matches before they punctured.  She loved them then, and at 4 years old she still loves them now, over every other toy she has.  And she (and Suzi) are not deprived pups by any means.

Now they no longer stock them.  There are heaps of other plastic squeaky toys available, but the plastic is much harder, and neither of them will touch them.  Or the toys are too big to get their little mouths around.  Or they have spikes on them that both dogs don't like.

We still have a heap of the favourite squeakies in the toy basket, but they've all lost their squeak now, and that's a major part of the fun for Molly, at least.  She just has to hear the squeak and she's off doing a little dance to start the game.  Luckily she'll play with them till they're in shreds, but still, it would be nice to replace the ones we have when they're totally used up.

I've looked everywhere for them, no dice.

Julian, do any of the old toys have the maker's name stamped on them? If so, maybe you can contact the company directly.

EmmaJ, they have nothing on them (just picked up one to look, and Molly went mental - play time!)  They were always displayed in a big plastic tube, wish I'd read the label on it.

Dawn dishwashing liquid used to make a scent-neutralizing version.  It was great!  It even worked on male goat funk.  Now I can't find it anymore. :'(

Stouffer's French Bread Pizza.

Clairol Hydrience Hair Colour.

The deep-fried apple pie at McDonald*s.  (They still had it in Mexico and in Spain the last time I went and I wonder if they still do... might be worth a trip! ;D)

You can get that wonderful apple pie at KFC.

Wendy's Apple Dumplings
Wendy's Hot Dogs
(They tried both these in the mid 1980s, but I think we were a test market, and it didn't last).  mmmmm, they were good!

Handkerchiefs.

When did this happen???  :o
I work at JCP we sell a 6 pack and a 13 pack at decent prices.
Target has them in the men's department.  I haven't looked for women's handkerchiefs, though.

Amazon has handkerchiefs as well.  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_9_7?url=search-alias%3Dapparel&field-keywords=handkerchief+cotton&sprefix=handker%2Capparel%2C201

Seems like they have almost everything.

The Sears store near us is closing in a couple months.  Sears has a slogan, "Where America Shops."  Since their brick & mortar storefront is closing, I wonder if Amazon could adopt their slogan since now days, Amazon is "Where America Shops."

Semi moist cat food.  It's still popular as treats, but I used to buy it in plastic jugs as regular food.  Or Tender Vittles had packets.  But they got discontinued for some kind of health reason.

Island Vibe perfume from Avon. My sister gave me a bottle and I loved the stuff. It was the perfect perfume for me (I have to use lighter, fruitier scents - musky/earthy scents don't smell very good on me) and I've been looking for another bottle ever since. I know you can find it on eBay, pretty cheap at that, but I'm weary of buying it. For all I know it's from when it was originally made a few years ago and may not smell the same as a fresh bottle.

Oh, and Wendy's SuperBuffet. I'm not sure if it was just a local thing up home or if a lot of Wendy's had these, but I loved it. I always ate off the SuperBuffet when I went to Wendy's as a kid. I was so sad when the stores up home took theirs out.

If you can't find it try Mary Kays Journey.  It's the only one I've ever found that doesn't smell funky on me, kind of a fruity/spring flower/rain kind of scent, those musky earthy scents are awful for me too.

Two things I've been looking for intermittently for MONTHS and have yet to find? A nice (high quality case AND implements) manicure set for my purse, and a replacement for the large ceramic mixing bowl the movers broke (and I nearly cried over). The bowl was heavy ceramic, plain, thick walled (held in cold well) and had a little notch on the bottom so I could tilt it at an angle when I was scooping out cookie dough. I had to do Christmas cookies with a plain glass bowl this year and it was frustrating - I kept having to put the dough back in the fridge between batches because it was too soft sitting on the counter in the glass. I used to use that bowl only once a year, but that once a year was crucial! I can't believe the movers broke it.

Best advice I can give to people moving:  Stuff as much of the "I can't replace this" items in your car as you can.  Yes, movers are professionals, but law of averages says they break things sometimes, and it's just as likely to be a 100 year old heirloom as it is to be your kid's My Little Pony themed lunchbox.

Oh, we did - van crammed to the roof. MIL's silver set and my jewelry did fine, as did some irreplaceable art sorts of things, but who would have thought a mixing bowl would be the thing I'd get broken, and get really upset about?

make sure that you get stoneware instead of ceramic- it's heavier and retains heat/cold much longer

edit if in the US get similar ones here http://reviews.bedbathandbeyond.com/2009/BBB40422497/reviews.htm - they do have the notch on the bottom even though it's not shown in the photos.

Plain old cotton/spandex camis without a shelf bra. I used to be able to find them at Old Navy, for next to nothing, and now they all have those stupid built in bras. I sleep in them so no need for that!  and others I've found in other stores aren't the same fabric. I also hate that soft, stretchy knit carp.  Yes, I'm picky. thankfully i still have a stash. and will hit the old navy oulet next time i head to my moms

Target usually has them. They last just fine, especially if you're just sleeping in them. What I don't like is when they get all lacy or wild prints. I just want a plain solid cami to wear under sheer tops or cover up a bit on a low cut blouse.

I was in Torrid a couple of weeks ago and they had some nice cotton/lycra mix camis. Or online here http://tinyurl.com/cyq6ouk

They are cotton/lycra w/no shelf bra. There is also a pretty good online code if you google.

Are you close to the border at all?  Mark's (Work Warehouse) has some nice ones that are cotton feeling with a bit of spandex.  And I'm your size, if not a bit bigger.  They are snug but that's what I like when I wear them for sleeping or under another shirt.

I just found out my conditioner is discontinued...and has been since 2009, which is when I bought it. this would explain why I've been unable to find any. I've got really fine hair, and its kinda a once a week conditioner (or was until it was the best of my many conditioners in the shower). Redken - Blonde Glam Pure Pearl. Now I just need to try their new one and hope it works as well :(

Sorry, I just read that as being kind of downing the thread because it has changed and harshing Amazon.  Just my interpretation, no harm meant.

Thanks so much to everyone for resurrecting this thread!  I missed it the first time.

To those who miss B&BW fragrances that are discontinued:  I am a soapmaker, and many of the soapmaking fragrance manufacturers have successfully duplicated the B&BW fragrances.  Just reading through this thread, I went and found dupes online for:

Dancing Waters
Coconut Lime Verbena
Cucumber Melon
Ginger Spice
Sugar Plum
Jeweled Citrus
Bergamot Coriander

Now, I don't own these scents, but I've got 'em on my "to buy" list now and if you want to pm me, I can let you know when your favorite fragrance is in stock in my soap shop.  I do have a few cucumber melon already.

Or if you personally know a soapmaker, ask them if they can get you your favorite B&BW scent and make it into soap for you.  I'm happy to make anyone a log of soap (about 12 bars) for $15 or so.  Whenever someone I know makes a suggestion to me for a fragrance for soap, I usually give them a free bar in thanks after it's made.

Update:  Someone's already asked for Coconut Lime Verbena and Dancing Waters so those scents are on the way, if anyone wants a log (or just a few bars) lemme know!
