Title: NaNoWriMo 2012!
Post by: faithlessone on October 02, 2012, 11:48:26 AM
As the new forums just went up today, I thought it was high time to put a call out here!

So, who's thinking of doing it this year?

Are you an eager first-timer or a seasoned veteran?

For my part, I'm going to attempt my sixth consecutive year! Ooph. I won it in 2007, 2008, 2010 and last year (2011), so I'm hoping I can succeed again.

I've got a pretty solid idea in mind for my plot, but who knows what'll happen in the next couple of months! Anyone else got the plot bunnies nipping at their heels?

If you fancy adding me as a Writing Buddy, you can find me here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/faithlessone

Yay!  I am going to be attempting it this year, too.  I have a couple of plots in mind, but nothing definite yet.  I am hoping to be a winner this year.  It will be my third year, but I have never won yet.

I have a fantastic plot that I've mulled over for months (I'm one of those people who imagines bits of a story before falling asleep at night). My past problem has been that I get bogged down with descriptions, and the story doesn't move the way I would like. Also, I may not have the time this year...my novel may have to wait until both kids are in school.

I'm doing NaNo as well this year. It's my second year. I won last year, but this year I'm not convinced I can pull it off. I have a basic plot, but it still has a lot of problems, not to mention it lacks suspense and has some major holes. But I'll give it a try and I still have a month to work out a timeline... :-\

My NaNo username is Jack1761, in case anyone wants to add me as a writing buddy.

I did it for several years. Will probably do it again this year. Wrote just over fifty-thousand words a few times. Wrote next to nothing a few other times. I'm JudithAnneAZ on NaNoWriMo.

Me! This will be my sixth consecutive year and (hopefully!) my sixth consecutive win. I did 100 000 words last year, but no way am I ever doing that again :P

This year I have a bunch of stuff due in November PLUS I'm volunteering with a bunch of things, so this might get a little dicey.

OH and I'm also the ML of my region! November is going to be...fun...

I'm semenkhare on the site: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/semenkhare

I would love to, but as we're getting the keys for our house on November 1st, I just don't think I'll have the time :(

A shame, because I had such a wonderful time with it last year :)

I just signed up for this year. I have a much better plot bunny bouncing around my head this year. Or there is a Doctor Who fanfic that is rattling around up there also.
I'm 8cowwife over there also. I'm looking forward to getting one of these "down on paper".

I took the first step...signed up on the website. "Jones" is used already though, so I am "chandanista".

If I allow myself to make excuses every year I'll never get to participate. Even if I only write half a novel, that's something that won't be written at all if I never start.

I've actually switched plots for my NaNo novel. I had to give up on the first idea I had because it was just too much research I still needed to do. So that one has been filed away for next year. Maybe.

This year I am doing a sequel to last year's novel. It is set during the Waterloo campaign. Part love story, part adventure, I guess.

I'm in.  I've attempted before but gave up.  Going on a new name now.  SocialD.  My novel is a coming of age story about four kids who don't know each other starting out but end up involved at the end.  My characters and their motivations are fleshed out, and I've got a decent outline, but don't know exactly where it's going.  Anyway, buddy me and I'll cheer you on.

I want to try to do it this year for real (before, work just made it impossible and might still)- but my big problem is, I don't seem to have a plot.  I'm better at short stories.   Sigh.  I have a few days to come up with something.

Yep, spent quite a bit of time there tonight! :)  I might be able to incorporate one of those into another short story I have floating around in my head and see how they mesh.  Still going to look a bit more.

I joined last week or so after seeing this thread (and having heard of NaNoWriMo in the past but never having participated).  Now with BT being much more intense than I imagined, I don't know if I'm going to be able to actually do it.  I am disappointed, I won't lie, but I think I may still try despite how hard it will be.  Maybe BT will get better once I get into the swing of things; this is only the 3rd day after all.

I'm sorry, I've been so inundated with acronyms over the last three days I forget people aren't thinking the same way I am.  It is Basic Training (not military in this instance).

I also forgot to mention that my novel is medieval fantasy-esque.

I am going to try to do it this year.  It will be hard because I have gone back to school, and as an English major, I am already writing all the time anyway.  I am writing a short story about the Choctaw Trail of Tears for my creative writing class, and am thinking about developing that into a novel.

I am katiescarlett on there, also, if anyone wants to friend me there.   :)

I'm doing it again this year, although I forgot about it until a few days ago. I have a plot (romantic comedy) worked out, though. Of course, day 1 and I'm in training for 6.5 hours, followed by 2.5 hours of work, then a concert, so I'm not sure when I'll actually have time to write.  :(

Ok first day.  How many words did you do?  And what is your daily target if you are aiming to do more than 50K words.

My target is about 2750-2900 per day

I'm in again this year (even though I didn't seem to find this thread till late, heh). I'm PearKiwi at the site, feel free to friend me if we aren't already.

This year, I'm just going to do a generic fantasy type novel. A princess is forced by her evil step mother to recover a long lost artifact, or die. She (along with her guard, who is working for the queen,) travel the land and other kingdoms along the way gaining a random group of ragtag adventurers who have their own reasons for joining her quest.

...I'm afraid I've spent more time working on the map of the land then working on the outline, heh. (The tutorial I'm using are at cartographersguild.com, in case anyone wants to try their hand at procrastinating. ;))

I managed to get to 5600 words on the first day, and my daily target should be around 2000 to 2500 from now on, but I am not sure I'll manage that because I'm already beginning to see the gaps in my research and a gaping plot hole... :-\

Wow guys!!!! I managed to get 3,653 words.

For some reason, I've ignored this thread up until now.  Don't know why...so very odd.

I'm crescentgaia over on the forums.  I used to be something else, but that name is now retired.  I'm working on what I call urban paranormal but NaNo calls horror & supernatural.  *rolls eyes*  Basically, vampires took over the world and now some humans are trying to get their world back.  It's book one of a seven book series, so next year will be book two for NaNo.  :D

I'm also working on fanfiction projects - got Yuletide assignments being mailed soon and I've got another exchange plus big bangs due - but the bulk of my word count goes towards the novel.  For example, yesterday I wrote 8,202 in the novel and 3,358 in the exchange fic I'm writing.  Some would call this rebelling, since i total the word counts but I'm still a lot ahead in the novel alone.  So, I dunno.

I've got my butt in the chair but am reading EHell and sipping coffee.  Soon enough, my brain will boot up.  :)

Not cheap!  Survival.  :)

Also, I've heard it's a good idea to go back to the scene where you're having problems and break it down.  Try to figure out what you're doing with the scene and put in or take out stuff that isn't working.

I am the big loser already. :P  I really thought I would be able to finish this year, but school is keeping me so incredibly busy.  And what I am busy doing is writing! (English major)  I have had to write 2 poems in the last week and I am working on a short story right now that is not going well at all.  I had thought of trying to expand my short story (about a family on the Choctaw Trail of Tears) for nano, but I don't even want to finish the story for my class.  I am staying home from work and school tomorrow because I have tonsillitis, and I am going to buckle down.  I will get through my homework and spend the rest of the day working on nano.

Wish me luck!

Best of luck, katiescarlett! You can do it!

I had a bit of a slow day yesterday and did not make my personal target of over 2000 words a day... Plus, I feel I'm getting sick - my throat is sore, and my head is all fuzzy. Just what I need... My writing is going to be, hm, interesting  :P

Good luck katiescarlett!

I'm writing over 2,000 a day, just not on Nano. I keep thinking "Oh that's a good idea" and spinning off short stories.  Arghh!

I keep thinking I'm doing great...then I come here and see all of your word counts.  ;D

Keep up the good work! I'm momentarily stuck....might take the cheap way through and get to the good part, come back to this later.

Not cheap!  Survival.  :)

Also, I've heard it's a good idea to go back to the scene where you're having problems and break it down.  Try to figure out what you're doing with the scene and put in or take out stuff that isn't working.

I do that all the time. When I was figuring out my plot, I made sure that there were a lot of different characters that eventually intersect, so in case I get bored with one I can skip to someone else for a while. ;D No one said the writing had to be linear!

(Plus, if you are including racy scenes, you really have to write them when the mood strikes. Or at least I do. I can't force those out when I am not feeling it.)

I think I'm doing good, I'm just 300 words behind where I want to be right now, but I think I can write that much more later, since it's still early enough for me. Edit: Actually, it looks like I'm a day ahead in my word count. Somehow I skipped a day.  :P

I'm doing the Reward/Backwards Nano again (http://nicolehumphrey.net/backwards-nanowrimo-the-reward-system/), since it worked so well for me last year.

I'm dropping out for this year. My grandma went into hospital last week and it's worse than we thought. I'm going to be busy all month arranging to move her into an assisted care place. Plus work is going to be picking up with evaluations at the end of the month.

I'm going to try to keep writing, but I'm not shooting for 50 000 anymore.

How's everyone else doing? I'm getting a bit concerned, since next week I'm not going to be around much, and I haven't managed to get as far ahead as I needed. On the other hand, I have got another 10K words written I can add in once I've finished the joining scene.

I'm still ahead for getting to 50k, but behind where I wanted to be... My only excuse is that I've been sick for the last few days. Today I'm feeling better, but totally unmotivated. I'm also having a few problems with my story, which is not very interesting at the moment. :-\

I feel very long winded and detailed, which is good for word count but frustrating on a "get the story going" basis. I missed the last two days, as on Tuesday I did not have the time and yesterday I was unmotivated. I did watch "Equilibrium" before bed though, which I count as research for my own post apocalyptic novel.

After two days of absolutely nothing, I've already written 2,600 words today, so I'm feeling a bit better. Hoping beyond hope to hit 20k today (another 3,400 words), but it's looking a little unlikely. 18k would also be nice (still 1,400 away).

*gets out the cookies and hot beverages of choice for everyone*  I think we need a pep talk from the archives of NaNo.

Neil Gaiman's Pep Talk (http://www.nanowrimo.org/pep/neil-gaiman).

And if Neil Gaiman doesn't float your boat, here is the archive of past pep talks (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/pep).

For everyone that feels that they are too far behind, I believe you're going to make it.  It might look like a long battle, but I've been where you are.  In 2008, I lost a week of NaNo due to being sick and exhausted from a long volunteer opportunity.  When I could sit up, I tried to just get out 50 words.  If I could do that while feeling like crud, then it was a victory to me.  As I got better, I was able to write more and more words.  So, if you feel like you can't do anything, then try to write 50 words.  Then, make room for more of the 50 word sessions and, when you're able, try to up it to 100 words.

Also, that works for anyone who is having problems trying to get the words out.  It's one of my favorite exercises and it works like this: Open your novel / chapter file in your word processor and write 50 words  If they go well, do another 50. If they don't, give it ten minutes to see if you can get a better replacement 50 or an additional 50 you feel is good enough to keep. And then you can shut the file and do whatever you want as long as it's pleasant. You did something on your novel, you deserve a reward. If you're enticed to go back to the novel, great. But try hard not to let the next 24 hours (or preferably today) end without 50 new words in your novel. It really doesn't matter if you dislike them and might delete them later, just make an honest effort.

Of course, if you feel you can't do 50 or think 50 is too low, substitute your goal of choice.  :)

Good pep talk! It reminded me of one of the strategies I use.

On days I know I won't have time to write, or when I have a bunch of free time but no way to write (like in the car or on the bus), I think about my plot and exactly where I want it to go. I know I want Gavin to go North, but how and why? OK, so he'll go because the King sends him, but why? I have two options of why Gavin goes, so I pick one and go with it; if what I think of doesn't satisfy me, I think about the other one. What this comes down to is that even if I'm not writing, I'm still working on my novel.

I'd just like to say that it is Not Cool to have a character go through a heart breaking experience that I didn't plan at all but it fell out of my fingers while I was typing. I don't see how I can keep writing if my eyes are filled with tears, I really don't.

I have never done that before (written a scene as I came up with it, no planning at all) and find it intriguing that "not pressing the backspace" can lead to such a thing.

Isn't it weird when your writing affects you like that? Particularly when your characters are doing things you didn't plan.

For me, I've hit 18.5k, and I am going to bed. I'm probably going to do a bit of a rewrite in the morning, because I've realised that I need my last main character to enter a lot earlier than I planned. Or possibly not. Gah, I'm too tired to make these sorts of decisions.

Good night all! Good luck in your novelling!!

So, I did manage to get around 2200 words yesterday. Not such a bad day, after all! Thanks for the pep talk, AngelicGamer!

One of my characters is acting very much out of character right now, though. This wasn't planned at all, because he's been the stoic type so far, and yesterday he kind of lost it. But then again, it makes sense in a way, I suppose, because he's beginning to realise that there might not be a happy ending for him, as the love of his life is slowly slipping away from him. Poor guy.  :'(

You're welcome, Talley!  Glad I could help.  :)

Have I told you guys of the psycho vampire named Clown I have in my novel?  Who popped up because he thought that the female main character's life was too boring and now he would make it interesting?  *facepalm*  He's now not happy with her because she managed to kill his assistant instead of being a good little human and making it easy for the vampire.  However, she's starting to learn that there are nice vampires in the world, so that's a good thing.

And yes, he does have flaming red spiky hair, just in case anyone was wondering.   ;D

[The novel is a human (Well, and dhampirs too) vs the vampires who took over the world.  The FMC was kind of always destined to be with the male main character who is a vampire and the second in command of the vampire world.  It's a fun novel, mostly because of the characters.  I couldn't remember if I had explained the novel here or not, so sorry if I have before.]

My novel is supposed to be a post-apocolyptic adventure-love story but I'm all caught up in describing and telling stories of my world's apocolypse.

Hence the surprise third party's tragic story that caught me off guard yesterday.

Are anyone else's characters becoming far too real for their own good?

I'm completely in love with my MMC, and it's driving me crazy. The guy is a vicious, murdering, usurping bastard, and he has to be killed off at the end of the novel, but my FMC is in love with him, and so am I. He's really quite sweet, in an odd way, and they recognise a kindred spirit in eachother. It's weird. And annoying. But strangely nice.

I think the NaNo Crazies have hit early this year!! They usually don't come until Week 3. ;D

I'm on about 8500 words, and don't know where I want my story to go next, or what theme I want to develop (of course, I had to pick the stupidly hard genre of Literary Fiction).

I think it's because I didn't plan it enough prior to November. Now I'm unsure whether to pull out of NaNoWriMo and go back to the planning stages. Then I can go back and have a proper crack at writing it. Or whether to plow ahead and write anything, even if it's completely useless and random stuff. I have a feeling that wouldn't really achieve anything, though.

Suggestions, please?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2012!
Post by: Talley on November 13, 2012, 05:26:34 AM
LifeOnPluto, something similar happened to me during NaNo Camp. I got completely stuck because I hadn't done enough research and worked on my story enough. But I didn't want to give up either, so I just decided to spend some time with my characters and simply go for the 'NaNoCamp Win'. I wrote pretty random scenes (some even go into the imagined backstory of the characters), whatever I felt like.

And now, for NaNo this year, I am really writing the story. I completely redid the timeline, changed some characters, dropped a few, added a few, changed the ending I had at first imagined - but I can reuse or rewrite some of the stuff I wrote during Camp. I actually find that it helps. So, basically, it wasn't a complete loss to just write something, anything, even if it just helped me to find out what I didn't want the story to be like.

I'm in the middle of my book and things are not going well.  It's a bit of a slog and I have to get through all of this stuff so I can do my big dramatic ending.  I'm focusing on writing 300-500 words at a time.

My write in tonight did not go well.  I usually get around 2500 words, I had about 1500 instead...sigh
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2012!
Post by: Mental Magpie on November 13, 2012, 10:31:55 PM
I'm skipping the slog and the things I'm not entirely sure about (like how the King manages to be so darn conniving)...actually, now that I think about it, he's the only one I feel the need to skip.  I have six main characters, two of which will not be formally introduced until the second book, so really I'm only skipping one of four.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2012!

I'm skipping ahead in my novel as well. I've just put in around 4000 words I wrote away from my computer... Those were scenes that go towards the end of my story. Ah well, as long as I'm writing something...

I just realised that I've completely forgotten my villain again. He's gone AWOL. He not very villainous either. I guess that's something I'll have to change when editing the book.

I spent most of the night writing. I was very proud of myself!

Then I woke up and realized none of it counted because it was in my sleep.

And as I scrambled to get something down before it all flew away, it hit me--It was all crap. My subconcious is crazy but I don't know if anyone wants to read the disorganized and illogical craziness that it gave me last night.

Oh dear... I just had a brilliant idea for a completely different novel last night. Now I can't stop thinking about it, and I really want to plan and write it. I also suspect that it will be a far easier story to write than my current one (YA paranormal, versus Literary Fiction).

However, I don't want to give up on my current story. I feel I should plug away at it, and save the new idea until after NaNo is over...  What to do, what to do?

If you plan on editing the one you're writing now, you can do that next month, and when you can't seem to focus on editing, you can write the new one!

Also, put down the plot bunny into a notepad file and into a folder of "Future Plot Bunnies" or just "Plot Bunnies".  So you can come back to it the next time you want to write a story.

However, I don't want to give up on my current story. I feel I should plug away at it, and save the new idea until after NaNo is over...  What to do, what to do?

If you plan on editing the one you're writing now, you can do that next month, and when you can't seem to focus on editing, you can write the new one!

or you can always save it for Camp NaNo! you know, plot away til camp

When in doubt, write porn! I churned out about 3000 words of pure smut last night. Absolutely nothing plotworthy, but fun nonetheless! Maybe my characters were just happy I wasn't putting them in another life-threatening situation.

This is an idea

I managed to get another 1500 words out yesterday, but it felt like I was writing in mud.

Two of my minor characters have completely hijacked my plot. I am actually enjoying writing about them more than I am writing about my main characters. They are more fun and less angsty. Oh well.

I'm still ahead (though not as far as I wanted to be :( ) and I'm beginning to falter. The bulk of my plot is over (way faster than I thought it would be). I missed Wednesday and Thursday this week, and today looks like it's not going go too well either.

Week 3 Blues?

Me too  :(

I still have a lot of plot to cover, but it's not that easy to write, and I'm not feeling very motivated. There's some more research to do as I go along, so maybe I can at least do some of that today.  I am trying to write the 'must have' 1667 words per day, and so far I've been good, but it's not that easy at the moment.

There still are giant plot holes that I need to fill somehow, but that might be something to do during the editing process rather than now...

So, technically, I've won due to the word count goal.  However, my story is far from done.  I'm not even at the first climax yet - that gets written today - but it's a lot harder to push yourself to keep going after hitting 50K.  This is my third time going for a larger than 50K goal and I hope that I make it.

Thanks!  I have little to no motivation at the moment.  Probably not a good idea that I put on Brave.  Coffee'll kick in soon.

I feel kinda like I cheated today.

I used my dictation software to read in the stuff I'd jotted down in my notebook, and sorta fleshed the notebook stuff out as I read it into the computer.  Then I cleaned that up a bit to change word choices and phrasing and when I was done, it ended up over 7,000 words.

That's not cheating, that's pretty awesome.  Can you recommend a good dictation software.  the one's I have found just dont understand me very well and I get frustrated and stop using them.

Congrats on your win AngelicGamer!!

I use Dragon Naturally Speaking, but while it works great for me, my mother in law has trouble with it.  It has difficult with accents and those who sort of 'slur' their speech or who talk too fast/slow.

I see the commercials, but I'm always a bit leery of "As Seen on TV" stuff.  However, I may give it a try.

Depending on your computer, you might have Windows Speech Recognition already installed. You might want to give that a try since I have heard it is nearly as good as Dragon.

I've tried the Windows one, and, in my experience, it has a lot of issues with accents. I don't have any particular regional accent, but I found that the only way to make it really understand me was to speak in the most careful Received Pronunciation I could manage. It got rather tiring after a while.

That might be a Brit thing though. If it was calibrated for US voices, you might have more luck.

I also use my Dragon a lot, so it's trained to my voice.  Back when I first got it, it was much more problematic.  I don't really think there are any dictation programs that are good 'out of the box'.  If you are going to use it a lot and willing to spend several hours going through it's 'training' thing, then I'd recommend dragon highly.

I'm still waiting for the version I just have to think at.  I'll be the most prolific writer of all time.

Technically won.

However, I just wrote scenes as they came to me.  Now I have to write the parts that string these scenes together.

Ty everyone!  And congrats Garden Goblin!  That's great.  :)

Someone explain to me how I'm supposed to write and help with Thanksgiving.  I don't see this ending well for me this week and having to scramble come Friday.  I only wrote a chapter of fic yesterday - Avengers/M:I:4/Bourne Legacy insanity - and nothing of the novel.  Oops.

Still have a lot of writing to do...

I am very much behind but at the same time, so much farther along than any of my story ideas have ever gotten before.

My son's surgery is this week, which is why I was hesitant to try this year, but I am glad I've tried, and I plan to still fit in 50 words here and there--towel isn't thrown in quite yet. Laptop is going to the waiting room with me, even if the spacebar is going out on it so 10 words turn into one. :)

I have 3,000 words to go to finish nano, but probably about another 40,000 to finish the novel. I bit off more than I planned this year.

Thanks for the luck wishes :)

The spacebar thing just started last week....if I could bring along my desktop, I know I could get a lot of writing done. I went over plot points w/DH last night, I have plenty to get me through plus; just need the time to get it down.

I did 700 words yesterday. Big whoop. lol

Congrats to the winners (and good luck to those who are almost there!)

I'm way behind. At this stage I'm aiming to finish with just over 20,000 words. Still, that'll be 20,000 words that I didn't have before November.

Oh, thank God! I finished about half an hour ago, but while I was scrambling it to submit, my computer froze and I had to restart. Unfortunately, I ended up saving the scrambled version over the right one. I just managed to get my original back. Luckily only the first half had been scrambled, so I didn't lose anything.

Now I can actually celebrate!

(I did kind of cheat, though, since it's not all one story. I wrote part of a story, and then a bunch of one-shots.)

*flops on floor* Done! Finally.

Oh course, I really need to go back and fix a bunch of parts. There were scenes that I started and just didn't finish, so I skipped on to the next part, but I did get everyone to their HEA. I think I need to take a break before I go back and start editing.

Now maybe I can work on all those plot bunnies that I ruthlessly buried when I was working on this story,...
