Title: Anybody want to help DD#2 shop for a dress? UPDATE #15, #26 #35! Shoes? #44
Post by: jpcher on October 02, 2012, 05:09:35 PM
DD#2 is going to a wedding (her BFbob's stepbrother) in 2 weeks. She's not sure of the time of the ceremony ::) but says that it's an evening reception.

BFbob will be wearing a suit and tie.

We really don't shop well together . . . I don't like shopping, I usually tend to get a bit cranky :P . . . so I thought that you all could help her pick out age/event appropriate dresses that aren't mom-biased.

She has one possible dress that is white with black polka-dots, trimmed with black around the bodice and hem. It is satiny material, strapless with a low laced-up back. So she will need a shrug or bolero type jacket if she wears this dress. Any thoughts here would also be very helpful.

Her dress shoes are black (I'd rather not buy a new pair of shoes) and she has a really nice dressy pair of brown boots.

She is tall, slender and 18-1/2 years old.

Anybody feel like shopping?

;D

I agree. Much more fun than having mom get someone to pick it out for her!  Besides, tastes are so subjective it would be an exercise in futility for a bunch of strangers to try and find something for her.

Northeast? So, late October autumn weather.

The dress you described sounds perfect. Obviously, no all-white dresses, but other than that ...

Young ladies her age often like strapless and mid-thigh, so go in that direction. Nothing too racy, and she should be comfortable dancing in it. This time of year I'd go with a jewel-tone - sapphire, garnet, emerald - all of which go well with black shoes. A wrap of some sort for the church and to keep the chill off - they have great ones at Uniqlo in the garden State Plaza.

How about sending her shopping with her sister and a budget?

Update: J Crew has some nice ones

Here are a couple of very affordable (the last one is on sale for less then $40!), age appropriate, trendy, wedding appropriate dresses that I think would look lovely on a slender young woman:

Tall, slender and 18... Hmm, she could wear just about anything!

The dress she already has sounds lovely. I tend to stick to no shorter than knee length (or just above) for a wedding, with minimal/no cleavage.

This sounds like a good excuse for her to go out with some friends!

LOL! That's what I thought! Give me an escape! ;D However there's only a few friends left that haven't gone off to college.

DD#2 has a late thing at school tonight, so she won't be home 'till close to 9:00, tomorrow she's going to her newly found internship after school, blah blah blah, her schedule is pretty well full.

So I thought doing some on-line shopping where we can call the store to make sure it's in stock or order on line would be easiest.

How about sending her shopping with her sister and a budget?

Thank you Queen. I did mention that to DD#2. I don't know if she talked to her sister or not, but the only day that their schedules might mesh is Sunday. Maybe DD#1 could come home for the day. That would be cool.

Thanks for the above suggestions! I will send all of your ideas to DD#2.

I think that DD#2 will like this one (from WillyNilly) http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/women/categories/dresses/view-all/scarlett-nite-embellished-one-shoulder-dress/prod.jump?ppId=pp5001260171&catId=cat100210008&deptId=dept20000013&N=4294966971&Nao=72&pN=4&topDim=Occasion&topDimvalue=special+occasion&dimCombo=Occasion

but will that be appropriate for the church ceremony?

I haven't had much luck finding a jacket/shrug for the polka-dot dress that she already has.

Please, keep your thoughts and ideas coming!  ;D

I think the blue dress WillyNilly found  is lovely and, like the dress she has that you described, a jacket or shrug wouldn't work well (for church or chill). However, a pashmina or other shawl would! A silvery color, or cream, or black - something she would have forever and use again and again. You can find them everywhere - I've seen them at TJMaxx, J Crew, department stores, etc.

The style that WillyNilly posted, especially that pretty one shoulder one, is very different from the ones OP posted in her links in the next post.  Which style does your dd like?  Like others said, style is so subjective.  But I second what the others said, I would shy away from a white satin dress with black polka dots.  For staying under budget and a wide variety, I also suggest the TJ Maxx or Marshalls route.
Title: Re: Anybody want to help DD#2 shop for a dress?

I would advise against her wearing a white satin dress to a wedding.

Normally I agree but I think an 18 year old in a white with black polka dots & black trim and wearing a shrug or wrap or bolero over it would be ok.  All white?  No, but with the pattern, etc especially at what is for the most part in the US considered way too young to really be thinking about marriage age, I don't think anyone will think of it in that "stealing the bride's thunder" kinda way.

jpcher, I really like your 3, 4 & 5 selections... but what is it your daughter likes?  I think your choice #1 was too "old" for the average 18-19 year old, but if that's your daughters style, its lovely.  #2 you said was pretty much a joke - its a very specific style and I could easily help you find that vintage look (although that dress is cute in of itself) but I think it takes a certain personality to pull it off and if its not your daughter's thing, then...

One thing I would personally suggest is color.  Now I'm a NYer so a sea of black dresses at a wedding to me is normal and appropriate... and very grown up (and maybe even a bit cliche).  So ok maybe she wants black for longevity - she will be able to wear it long into her 20's maybe even 30's if her size doesn't change.  But I feel like when you are young and hot that's when you can pull off the bright colors and short skirts, so she should, IMHO, embrace that!

Thanks for your continued suggestions!

I did get a chance to show her what was posted last night.

What does she like? I was really surprised to find that she's going for more of a "classy" style rather than the party styles. She said that she want's sleeves, simple and elegent . . . quite different from what she's chosen in the past.

I bet that she'd really like the one redsfan posted, except that it's black (she liked the color of the blue that WillyNilly posted.) Maybe she'll go for the second one Hmmmmm posted.

At least we're narrowing it down to style, that's a huge step!

Oh, and she tried on her polka dot dress. She said it doesn't fit her right any more (the dress is 2 years old.)

Any other suggestions? I can't tell you how much your ideas are helping right now.  ;D

UPDATE

Alrighty, then.

DD#2 just came home (for about 5 minutes) and showed me a dress that she found . . .

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2019572368&VariantID=

She then told me that she was going to wear black tights with her grey (I thought they were brown) dress boots . . . I think the boots idea is coming from the shot with the shrug . . . wearing it more as a tunic rather than a dress.

But, Hey! You can't beat the price! ;D

What do you all think?

Likewise. I think it could look very nice with opaque tights or leggings, but on that model it looks like it barely covers the private bits.

First off, that's REALLY short.

Second off, tunic and leggings aren't dressy enough for an evening wedding, unless it's uber-casual, which evening weddings tend not to be.

(ETA: it's also really really cute, and I love the color.)

I have to agree with the PP. I love the dress, but with bare legs or flesh-toned hose it is far too short for a wedding, and with dark tights or leggings it is far too informal.

ETA: Here's another Forever 21 dress that looks a bit longer, though it doesn't have sleeves. http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=F21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000048946&VariantID=

Or, the prices aren't nearly as good, but what about one of these dresses

It's a lovely dress and I'm sure your daughter would look lovely in it, but I have to agree with previous posters- it's really not appropriate for the situation at hand. It's far too short, and a "tunic and leggings" look, while cute and trendy, is not appropriate for a formal occasion like an evening wedding. Also, unless it comes in other colors, the white at the wedding would be a problem, too. As pretty as the dress is, I really feel that it's far more suited to, say, a night out on the town, rather than a wedding.

I see it as mint green, which is fine, and its a lovely dress. The model is 5'11" - if your daughter is significantly shorter, she'll be ok. Kids love super-short, but that is un-sit-down able. Tights or leggings with boots are too casual; she could try to find tights in that sheer mint green and wear heels.

It'd be pretty hard to match mint-greens, especially in the fall.

When she first showed it to me on her i-pad I said "It's white and lacy! Noooo!"

Then I looked it up on my computer and it shows up as a very pale (sage) green.

I cringed when she talked about the black tights and boots . . . this is why we don't shop well together.

So, what's a mother to do?

That's a very cute, very short dress.

Please do not try to get tights to match, a pair of nude/skin color sheer tights will work.

I would recommend either gold or silvery champagne accessories depending on your daughter's complexion.  Try DSW, she should be able to find a great pair of gold strappy heels or even some short booties.  I'm actually looking a 3 pairs of shoes I own that would work with this dress.

Emphasize that while it's really cute (and would look good with tights but I'm not sure about that color boot (but don't comment on the boots)), it's not formal enough for an evening wedding. Suggest she check the evening dress category on Forever 21 - they had LOTS of cute options that would work well. Also, they have a number of little black dress options that would work well not only for the wedding, but could be dressed up or down for any number of other occasions.

Just steer her away from the hot pink one-sleeve dress (unless the bride is a Kardashian or a practitioner of the oldest profession). That one would be great for clubbing, but not for wedding.

Weighing in on your DD's choice here:   I wore mint green to a wedding once.  It looked white in the photos.   I do not think it was the right choice!   And lace in particular is also very bridal-like so I personally think guests should steer away from lace.      Also I agree with PPs about the dress being too casual - it's very pretty, but not really suitable for a formal occasion.   I'd go slightly longer, slightly darker, and a different fabric.

I remember how hard it was trying to find suitable wedding guest attire when I was her age.   It really is often one of the first "adult" occasions that a young adult attends these days, apart from school formals/balls/proms.   When I was 19 I ended up with a fairly nice black dress in the end because I couldn't find anything else, but I still don't really like black for weddings if possible.    It's much easier as an adult now I have several options and colours to choose from in my wardrobe!

If it looks white to us on computers its going to look white in dim lighting of a catering hall and in photos.

But its good to see her style!  So how about:
http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress_little_black_dress&ProductID=2019621131&VariantID=
Its very similar but the color makes all the difference.

This is a similar cut: http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress_little_black_dress&ProductID=2021839941&VariantID=
and would look great with grey boots and chunky gold or lucite jewelry.

If its a "comfortable" thing, this one would fit the bill: http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress_evening_cocktail&ProductID=2000048857&VariantID=

I would tell her that it's a lovely dress and she has excellent taste - because it is and she does - but it is just not appropriate for a wedding. Too pale and too lacy. Possibly a wee bit short, but that's hypocrisy because I would totally have worn a dress that short when I was 18 and had good legs.

One other thing I will add is that while I am a massive fan of opaque tights and boots with everything whenever possible I learnt the long and hard way that they really only look nice with winter/fall colours. Mint green definitely not. That's a nude tights dress if ever I saw one. Actually when I was 18 I'd have worn my most sensible underwear and gone without tights altogether.

Looking at that one website if she wants a pretty lace dress I'd go for this

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2025101808&VariantID= (http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2025101808&VariantID=) with a wrap if she wants sleeves or this

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000034926&VariantID= (http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000034926&VariantID=) but definitely NOT in the taupe - too pale

I think this is a beautiful dress, although I *hate* the colour. Your DD may wear it though, I know mine would carry it off

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000048014&VariantID= (http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000048014&VariantID=)

This is also really pretty and could be teamed with opaque tights (not leggings)

Although I suspect that she won't like it at all, out of all the dresses I thought that this one

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000047872&VariantID= (http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000047872&VariantID=)

was probably the most elegant and flattering for a young girl. I know the temptation is to show off a great figure in a fitted dress but you have to be in *fantastic* shape to successfully carry off a dress like this without a belt and it shows it more subtly. Also it could be teamed with strappy sandals or boots/tights depending on her other accessories.

Has she tried modcloth?  They are a go to spot for really cute fun dresses.  They also have vintage styles that have sleeves.

We have a winner! ;D

Thank you Iris!

We do have a Forever 21 store close by so I suggested that she call and ask about the style number, if they have it in stock, if we order on-line what about returns if it doesn't fit, etc. So the plan is coming together. ;D

I showed her all of your posted suggestions, along with many comments from posters giving great advice which she was amazed at. "Wow. You really have friends like that? They are so cool! Can I join this site?" (Um, no, because then I can't talk about you any more! :-\)

Shopping with you all has been a great time-saver for her and a huge relief to me (since I really don't like in-store shopping!) We had fun looking at all of your suggestions together, plus a few other sites that she had been looking at.

Sooooo -- From your comments (non mom-biased!) she already agreed to panty-hose instead of tights or leggings. Yea!

On to shoes and accessories. Do you think that black shoes would be okay? I'm iffy on the black shoes (really cute shoes she already has) with that dress but if they were matched with a black clutch purse? Would that work?

Since she didn't go to prom and the dress is a great price I could probably spring for shoes and a purse.

She liked the style of the shoes that PastryGoddess posted (especially the first one) but thought that the heels were too high.

Any thoughts?

Trust me, we've been doing our own on-line searching, but your advice and comments are priceless. THANK YOU! ;D

Glad you like the dress :) You can return the favour with DD1 when she's old enough (because she sure doesn't listen to me!)

I like the way they've styled the dress on the website, personally. Nude shoes to show off long legs (or make short legs look longer), a simple clutch and a very simple pendant necklace, especially if your DD has lovely long hair like the model in the photo.

Definitely nude shoes.  Should be a very pretty outfit!

I forget that not everyone likes or wants to wear 5 inch heels :)

I have another pair of lower gladiator style sandals, they are about 5 years old though.  I'll look and see if I can find a picture.    The gold is really great because its not too garish.  Also anything with a heel zipper is SUPER comfy.  You have lots of room in the shoe to move around and they don't pinch.

Off I go!

ETA: Just looked at the dress and because it's so neutral, I would not go with neutral accessories.  She needs to add a pop of color in the jewelry and the handbag.  I don't know where you are located but I get a lot of my jewelry from Charming Charlie. (http://charmingcharlie.com/cc/about/storeLoc.jsp) They are very budget friendly

Cute dress!

I think a nude shoe could work, just because they are so in style right now.  But I think a darker or bold color shoe would do great.  But if she's wearing hose, please no sandals or open toe though! She's young she should do something bold and fun, a bright shoe or purse or something. So while I think you should spring for new shoes, even if you don't just use a really "wow" purse, or something.

I don't think that dress is appropriate for a wedding either... A cream colored dress is too close to white/ivory. I'd be questioning it (internally) if someone were to show up at a wedding wearing a color that is THAT similar to that of a traditional wedding gown. Especially with it being crochet, as it somewhat resembles a lace pattern.

If she really wants to get a dress at Forever 21, and she wants sleeves, something like these would be far more appropriate.

If she isn't insisting on sleeves, a dress like these would be great too...

The sleeves are my favorite part, because is is a bit unexpected, and a nice touch of style with modesty.

DD (15) is wearing for homecoming, a red with beige crocheted back and neck dress, and we found great shoes at (gasp) the mall, with clearance sales going on now!  The tops of the shoe are a sort of lace/yarn/crochet and nude/beige overall, and they look like they were made for the dress.

We only went to the mall for an alterations place (3 1/2 inches off the floor length dress since DD is...short) and she said to me, "Mom, we are at the MALL!  We can look at "real" shoe stores!"  And we did, and we scored.

For your DD's dress, black would be too "heavy" and I agree with other posters that suggest a neutral/nude heel.

Happy hunting!

oh--you could actually take the dress, or at least a photo of it, when you shoe shop.  Store clerks can be very helpful.  One store we went to had nothing for us, but the clerk had fun discussing shoes and recommended another store that worked!  :)

Cream lace at a wedding, I wouldn't do.

And that dress is (like the other ones) very short.

Oh, dear. To those dissenters of the dress. You don't think that the peach color offsets the cream overlay enough?

DD#2 ordered it yesterday . . . she's running out of time.

So, she's going with this dress:

http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=f21&Category=dress&ProductID=2000034926&VariantID=

and these shoes:

http://www.agacistore.com/product.aspx?id=1179741&cid=1364  (Nude color)

She still needs a purse and will go with nude (or slightly darker tan) panty hose.

DD#2 and BFbob spent the morning with BFbob's grandmother shopping for clothes for him. He said that he found a nice cream colored shirt with a peachy colored tie and a brown sports coat to go with brown slacks.

Then, bless his heart . . . after lunch with Gma, BFbob went shoe shopping with DD#2 where (after many stores at the mall) they found the shoes posted above.

As always, I appreciate everybodys input and I hope to think that they won't be breaching any etiquette dress codes with what they have chosen to wear.

Thank you all! for your help! ;D

cute shoes! :)

I think she'll be fine in her outfit.

I'm still pushing for some color somewhere in the outfit, but then again I wear these (http://data.whicdn.com/images/25753812/233698_659_ss_01_thumb.) shoes on a regular basis, so I may be a little biased

The dress and shoes should look really good together. I disagree with other posters who think the dress is to "bridey" to wear to a wedding. It in no way resembles a wedding dress and no one could look at someone wearing that outfit and say, "Gee, she's trying to upstage the bride!"

I think your daughter made a good choice.

PastryGoddess -- way back when I was young, before I had kids, I would have been all over the shoes that you've posted! I was either wearing 5-6 inch heels or barefoot. Stylish heels were my trademark. Jeans with heels? Yeah, I was cool. 8)

I miss those days.

I'm a bit surprised that the DDs don't go for the high heeled shoes. But they never saw me wear them.

I do love your style! ;D

The shoes are cute!

I still think the peach is too close to a flesh tone to set off the cream color of the dress enough for it to be appropriate. I was raised that you don't wear white to a wedding, at all (unless it is something with a pattern to it, like a white dress with polka dots, stripes, or a floral of some sort).

And even though the dress doesn't look like a bridal gown, it's still a bridal color. I attended a wedding over the summer where a guest wore an ivory pantsuit to the wedding. It was a pair of pants, and a jacket. It was a lovely outfit. It in no way resembled a bridal gown. But people still talked. Mainly because the woman that wore the pantsuit was the Mother of the Groom, but they would have talked no matter what.

It's a lovely ensemble and i think she will look gawjus!

I disagree with those who think it's too bridey- the sleeves are definitely peach and not anywhere near white/cream and the dress itself has the peach layer and it's not really a "bridal dress" style. hope she has a great time!
