Title: S/O of Holiday Hill... What's you Black Friday plans/preferences?
Post by: afbluebelle on November 17, 2012, 05:41:21 PM
I noticed that the subject of Black Friday is up in a lot of conversations, and I was just curious what e-hellions did for this?

I go out on Black Friday, but the only thing I've ever really gone out to buy was fabric that was deeply discounted. My MIL has sent DH, myself, and my BIL out on shopping missions, but I mainly just like wandering around watching the chaos ensue.

Two favorite random Black Friday moments:

I stopped to read a sales flier that was near a display in Wal-Mart. When I was  done reading  and looked up, a significant sized line had formed up behind me, because... well, I guess I looked like the display would be released for sale soon. :P
Getting blocked in by several carts and having to low crawl to my husband underneath a bunch of clothing racks. That was fun! ;D

I'm planning to follow my annual tradition of staying curled up on the couch in front of the TV w/ DH, the kids & my iPad. We watch movies, shop the online Black Friday sales, and never get out of our PJs. Leftovers for lunch :)

I used to go out but once people were getting hurt on a yearly basis I stopped going out.

I always buy the family's new Christmas morning fleece jammies. Anything else I might pick up (DVDs, picture frames, fuzzy socks) is generally a cheap impulse buy. I go because I used to go with my mom and it brings back good memories, plus I'm usually up at 5 AM anyway.

I do not fight other people for goods in high demand and low quantity. I also don't go on Thanksgiving itself. Nobody's gotten hurt at my local stores yet *knock on wood* but I'd hate to tempt fate.

My sister spends Thanksgiving with her in-laws, so she holds Thanksgiving Part 2 for my family on Black Friday.  The first few years her husband made a turkey (Thanksgiving Part 2 actually got started because he wanted to make turkey but his mother was making it for the actual day) but lately it's been lasagna.

I did go shopping last Black Friday, but only to the grocery store because I needed to run in real quick and pick up an ingredient for something I was making for T2 dinner, and the grocery store was nearly empty.

I go grocery shopping! the stores are empty, and its so nice to be able to get what I need without dealing with SS's, and being pushed and shoved.  I also do some "non-shopping" related  errands. And I am working, but 5-9 at my store. PM, not am.

I've never been shopping on Black Friday. It was the worst day of the year for crowds even in the '60s. I have dropped into the store for something quick, but never during a rush. It's just a usual grab something for supper  if anything because my grocer is Walmart.

I find it insane. Now that I think about it, I've never seen anything I needed or wanted in the 'doorbuster' specials.

Gifts in our family are usually modest things (smart socks or daily calendars) or gifts of cash for the household.  The only things we buy on Black Friday are staples such as fruit, vegetables and milk that we normally buy several times a week from local merchants.

The idea of getting up early, standing in line and fighting over things that no one needs is anathema to us.  We just say 'NO'.

We'll play it by ear on the day, but what we won't do is most shopping. (If necessary I'll fill a prescription or buy milk or tissues or such.) In recent years, I have (in no particular order) gone to the aquarium, an art museum, and my gym.

I'll be at my sister's, who lives in a small town, so we won't be shopping. Usually, I don't shop on BF, except online. :)

I won't be doing much, if any, Black Friday shopping this year.  I'm very unhappy that so many retailers are going to be open on Thanksgiving Day, so I'm avoiding all of them this year.  I may do Small Business Saturday instead, even though I find the name of the day incredibly pretentious.

Instead, I think I'm going to work on making products for my own small business.  Maybe do some online shopping.  I'm almost finished with my Christmas shopping, so that's nice!

I'll be doing something new this year - watching YoungestGrandson while my DD and DSIL do something with some of the people from their church.

YGS is all of 9 months old, and is as seriously cute as his 4 first cousins were at the same age.  ;D

I work in healthcare, so I'll be working that day. Unfortunately the major shopping area is in between my house and my job  :'( so it will take me extra time to get to work.

I detest the whole idea of BF, and wouldn't go even if I could. I'm more in favor of small business Saturday.

I wanted to go to Walmart for a couple nice deals ($10 for a 6-qt crock pot, $20 for king sheet sets) but they are opening at 8pm Thanksgiving night this year. I take issue with that, so I'm not going.

Generally, in my family, Black Friday is a team effort. We each go to 1-2 stores and pick up things for other family members at that store. For example, last year, my mother in law picked up a food processor I wanted from Kohl's, and I bought things on behalf of my parents at Target.

The Canadian equivalent is Boxing Day, December 26th.

Generations ago, it was a fairly quiet day to spend visiting friends that you hadn't been able to see on Christmas Day - most people had the day off.  About 40 years ago, stores that would never have been opened on that day started opening.  And about two or three years after that - they started opening at about 6 am, so lineups (especially at electronic stores) started at about 1 am.

Both of my kids did the freezing-lineup once or twice, no more.  Me - not at all.  I absolutely hate crowds and actually am mildly claustrophobic.  If I have to pay a few more $$ to order online - so be it.

Dh and I will either...

a) lounge around at home in our pajamas all day and eat leftovers
or
b) go to the range and get in some target practice (we are not 100% sure if the indoor range will even be open, but if it is we figure that it will probably be pretty empty)
or
c) go catch a movie...maybe Skyfall

Odds are that we will end up going with option a by default because we tend to be very lazy on the day after eating a heavy holiday meal.  Go figure!

I never go shopping on Black Friday. The crowds are just too much for me. And there's nothing for sale that I want so much that I'll miss half a night's sleep for it. And now that the stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day--I feel retail workers deserve a full day off, just like the rest of us. (Not that my boycott of BF is doing any good.  :-\)

This year, my brother will only get to see his kids on the Friday of the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. So we are having our big dinner on Friday, because we'd rather have the kids with us than have a big dinner on Thursday without them. The poor kids are going to have to eat two Thanksgiving dinners, but since two of them are teenaged boys, we are hoping they won't complain too much.

Good question....DH and I both have the day off for the first time in a while.  I think he may go out shooting with a friend and if that is the case, then I will probably go to the local craft stores to see what yarn bargains are to be had.  But that won't be until much later in the day.

I hate shopping on a regular day and add crowds and you've got the set up for a major case of anxiety. Fortunately my family and friends and I only exchange handmade or secondhand gifts. I will do some shopping online on Cyber Monday because I need a new pair of good boots and I'm not willing to pay $200 for any of the ones I'm interested in.

I boycott all retail except groceries in November and December so for Black Friday, I generally stay in. Or I might go out for a walk or to a friend's house to hang out. No shopping whatsover. This year's a little different, I've been invited to a party so I'll go to that. The rest of the day will be goofing off.

I don't shop on Black Friday.  I don't like crowded stores, parking lots or restaurants.  I pretty much stay home eating leftovers and watching TV with DH right there with me unless he has to work.

One  year, DH had to do some shopping Christmas Eve.  I accompanied him to the mall and planted myself on a bench near the confluence of several mall "wings." I sat there with coffee and a cookie watching hundreds of last minute shoppers go nuts.  It was kind of fun.  I wonder if some people do that, just watch,  on Black Friday.

If the weather is nice, DH and I might drive over to a smaller town nearby that has some fun little shops and an old-fashioned main street sort of feel for awhile. And we'll go to our favorite local gaming shop, which is having a sale. We'll probably also buy groceries. But we don't do malls or major retailers on that day; it's just too much for me.

Because I have epilepsy, and sleep deprivation triggers seizures for me, I can't go out all night with the rest of the family.  That being said, I actually still get my shopping done while staying home in bed.  >:D  All the rest of the family (aunt, uncle, cousins, mom, and sister) all like to go shopping.  Two years ago, I volunteered to keep my Wade and Ella, my niece and nephew, and sent money with my cousin.  They went to Wal-mart at 8 that night, and waited all night to get 4 laptops for $299 apiece, including mine.  The only thing I did was wake up and bring them donuts at about 3 in the morning, then went back home to bed (live less than 5 minutes from Wally world).

Last year, they decided to head to Oklahoma City (about an hour and half drive from our small town) and my mom and I sent them money to buy us kindles.  They got back to my parents' house about 6 that morning and were sleeping in various places around the house when the rest of us got up.  (We generally all spend the night at my parents' and then spend the rest of Black Friday either running around my small town, after the all night crowd has dissipated, or stay home and play games or go to the movies.)

Not sure what the plan is this year.  I just got a new laptop a couple of weeks ago, and my kindle fire is only a year old, so there are no big electronics I need this year. Probably I will just spend the day finishing my portfolio project for school, and resting.

That's an interesting idea. I loathe shopping in the best of circumstances, and what I have to do gets done very fast. I can last about 15 minutes in stores; give me a bookstore and you may get an hour but rarely more. My impatience kicks in and I don't want to inflict that on anyone, including myself.

What appeals to me about the watching idea is that I might go and buy some big bags of wrapped candy and begin my usual holiday tradition of carrying it around stores and giving it to the retail workers with my best wishes for a happy holiday season. They suffer terribly during this time of the year and probably no worse than on BF and December 26. So maybe I will make an extra effort this year to go out on BF and make some workers' day better.

Anyone want to join me?  ;)

On Black Friday, we usually wake up late, eat a good breakfast and then go shopping.

We don't go with anything in particular in mind. We always to go ToysRUs. That's my favorite place. Sometimes we go to Best Buy. We do most of our Christmas shopping on Black Friday and its kinda fun.

I am going to sleep late, stay home and decorate a gingerbread house and the Christmas tree with my husband and kids. For dinner, we will have Boxing Day Club sandwiches (turkey, stuffing, cranberry jelly, lettuce and bacon on grilled sourdough) and sweet potato fries.

I have absolutely no desire to go anywhere near the mall.  I finished my christmas shopping this week.

Exercise 8-9am.  One cat has a vet appointment at 10am.  Ring for the Salvation Army 4-8pm.  I ring outside a department store and they let me use their rest room.  Thats the only time I'll enter a store that day.

I have to work (8-4:30, not retail, no customer contact).

In years when I don't have to work, I usually drive to the Mall of America (15-20 minutes from my home) and find a good place to watch the chaos.

Probably going downtown, more to people watch than anything else.  Got most of the major gifts already, though a lot of that involved air travel.  Bought what I could locally.  What's left needs to be ordered, and we'll do that at our leisure.

Black Friday is also the day I put up my Christmas decorations!

Turns out I'm going to a Harvest Festival that day...  But there's a parking garage there that's sane, and we get in early and leave by 2 when the crowds ramp up.  After that I have some shopping to do, but it's to some ethnic supermarkets, not a mall department store.  THOSE I don't touch.  The Harvest Festival is as crazed as I'm willing to get, and it's pretty good as long as I get there for opening and leave shortly after lunch.

Likewise.  If I have to buy anything, I'll get it online.

Of course, this will only be the second year so I guess it's a new tradition.  Both my mother and I work on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and have the day after Thanksgiving off from work (as well as Turkey Day itself).  So, we treat Thursday as "prep day" and have our actual Thanksgiving on Friday.  It's a lot more relaxing to get the meal put together when you're not trying to get it done all on the same day (especially given the number of pies I'll be making this year--last year I made 5 for seven people, this year I'll be making 10 for twelve people as my brother, future wife and her three children will also be present in addition to my parents, myself and my four children).

This is my husband's bike ride that he started 2 years ago. I do the officiating, which means I get to drive my car to the top of each hill and determine the "finish line" at what looks to be the highest point. DS loves to be the official photographer :-)

I've done the early morning, waiting in line till the store opens twice. The first time because I was persuaded by family members that it would be fun. I can't explain the second time. It still confuses me.

I will occasionally go out that day in the afternoon to browse at a few stores if they don't look to crowded.

I'm kind of motivated this year to get some craft supplies, so I'll check to see if there are any good deals there.

Otherwise, I usually just relax at home. Some years we've gone to the movies. Some years I make DH get out the Christmas decorations if I get tired of sitting around.  ;) I love the ideas some have mentioned in here for making it an at home family day. I can think of lots of things we could do. Make cookies or some other treats. Drink hot chocolate, watch movies. Crafts. Make Christmas cards. Read. Or just general playtime.

I will probably go to the movies or watch DVDs on my computer.  I can't remember when I last shopped on Black Friday.

I am thinking about the time when Brunhilde's sister predicted "Sometime soon we'll be finishing our pumpkin pie and going to the mall."   No; we won't and we all feel this is completely wrong.

With all the Christmas stuff already on store shelves before Halloween, why is this necessary?

My sisters and I are going to go out for a bit on Thursday night, because there are very specific things we would like to try to get. This way, we can sleep in on Friday morning! We do this more as time to spend together being goofy, than out of any real desire to grab everything we can. I do have ONE thing I want to buy. The chances of getting it are pretty slim, but I figured I might as well try, since I'll be there anyway.

I don't tend to ahve the energy to black Friday shop.

BUT, the Meijer in my little town will have the same black Friday deals as the Meijer in the city.  So around 10 am, I'll roll in there, stock up on a few things (Christmas PJs for the little one, 60c matchbox cars, lost leader items like play doh and board games, etc), and be done for the year.

I don't do crowds, I don't do mornings (especially Oh-gawd-awful in the morning), and I don't really do shopping.  So, I will be spending Black Friday the way I usually do, at the office catching up on stuff and maybe doing a little Internet surfing.  That said, last year I went to the Home Depot near my home and wasn't tramatized.  I might try that if they have the 99 cent poinsettias again.

I love shopping on Black Friday! There! I admit it! I'm one of the crazies. Well, not really, not one of the really crazies.

Firstly we don't do gifts for any December holidays in my family so I really have no shopping agenda.
Secondly, I don't do the 6am/midnight/8pm on TG bit. There's nothing I need that badly or need to save $50 on to make it worth that kind of effort.

BUT! There are some deals to be had. And I love to shop. So, we started this tradition a few years ago and now we do it every year.

We live three hours from a double-huge outlet mall (two separate malls across the street from each other). We wake up at 5 am (it helps that we are guests at my sister's for TG so we're coming off a fun & relaxing day) and drive three hours to the malls. Just about the time we're getting there (~9am) the extreme early crowds are dying down. We shop till lunch time when the crowds are building back up and leave the mall for a nice TexMex lunch at a local spot. Then we return and shop till dinner time when we drive 30 minutes to a much larger city for dinner. Three hours back home gets us to bed around midnight.

It's a long day but it's a lot of fun because we love to shop and get some good deals and just generally enjoy the day. Anyway, it's fairly stress free because like I said, no agenda, just shopping for myself, and my mindset is "don't be in a hurry". These malls are outdoor malls and like I said, huge, so even when it's crowded, it's not really all that bad. I don't think I've ever waited behind maybe 3-4 people in any line at the cashier!

Black Friday represents the things I avoid most in life, getting up early and crowds. If I do any shopping it will be online, I try to avoid going into any store from Saturday before Thanksgiving until Jan 2 except for grocery stores. One of these days I'll stockpile 3 months of food so I can avoid the grocery store as well. For me it's just the day before the Michigan-Ohio State game. Go Blue!

Inlaws are visiting so we might do some touristy thing in Washington DC, or we might just spend the day reading and learning about what everyone is up to in DH's hometown (population >200 so when I say everyone it means every person).

If I'm guessing right and you are talking about San Marcos, bon voyage! That is my one definite Black Friday "no way in heck" destination. Mainly because it's SO sprawling, more than anything else.

I've gone some years with my mom, more for the spectacle than the savings (though I did get my gifts for friends that night each year when I was in high school).

This year, we'll be on a trip out of state with only carry-on luggage, so even if I wanted to shop, I would pass.

Yup, you got it right, San Marcos. The sprawl is exactly what makes it seem less crowded. Fortunately they really do have adequate parking as well and the walking doesn't bother me at all so as long as the weather holds up, it's really a good place to be on Black Friday. Anyway, have fun on your trip!

I love that my office now shuts down for black Friday. I like to hide inside and not leave home at all. Gish has to work this year, so i will have the house to myself, which is rare, so extra nice. Much as i feel bad for him having to work i am looking forward to it.

The only time I have ever been in a  store on black Friday was last year.  Our kitchen faucet had the poor timing to terminally break on that day.  I really NEEDED a new faucet.  I got the faucet and yes it was on sale but, the experience reinforced my inclination to avoid all stores on that day unless itís something like my broken faucet that canít be worked around.  I really don't care what kind of sales they're having.  My time and sanity are worth more!

Black Friday is my personal deadline for getting all my necklaces up on my Etsy site and getting some web ads running - I generally try to advertise with small webcomics (because who doesn't like webcomics?) so if y'all read comics online, keep an eye out for a banner ad for Nerdy Necklaces because that's me  ;)

My mom and I LOVE Black Friday. We've shopped together on BF for years, it's become our holiday shopping tradition. About 2 years ago we started getting up for the early bird sales and now this year my mom wants to just stay up. The plan is to take a brief nap once we get home from Thanksgiving (which is held about an hour away from us) then meet up at my moms house for a snack and coffee and to formulate a shopping strategy. We usually hit between 6-10 stores and are home before noon with at least half of our holiday shopping done.  ;D

I can honestly say I don't see any more rudeness on BF then on any other shopping day. Most of the store clerks and fellow shoppers have a great "we're all in this craziness together" attitude which makes it quite fun, IMO.

I'm another who tends to avoid stores from Thanksgiving to Boxing Day, except for groceries and a few other minor exceptions: getting a gift for Bagman's birthday (11/29), replacing anything essential of mine that gets lost or broken, and picking up something for the office Secret Santa, should we decide to do it (we don't always). Otherwise, I don't do Christmas gifting.

We have a friend who throws a potluck Black Friday night. Since Bagman has to work during the day, I'm in charge of whipping up our potluck contribution. The only other thing on my agenda that day is working out.

I usually avoid it although my DH gets up early to go check out the deals.  This year I'll go out to look at 50% off Christmas trees at Michael's as we're thinking about getting a fake tree this year so we can have it up all season and maybe some decorations.   We might look for my Christmas present as well - DH is thinking about jewelry but also knows I am very picky about what I will wear or like but when we do this I miss out on being surprised.   I prefer being surprised so it will have to depend on how good the deals are.

We don't do Black Friday in my house, although we tried it a couple of years ago and discovered that it was not worth getting up before the crack of dawn for a limited selection of sale items.
This year, as we both work in our local school system (and I am in college to boot!) we plan to spend the day in our PJs, eat leftovers, exchange war stories about our job (we have the same position at different schools!) and laugh at those who spent Thanksgiving giving retail workers fits! >:D

I'm working retail!  Fortunately I work in a specialty store that doesn't do the typical Black Friday markdowns, so I anticipate seeing some shellshocked shoppers meandering in by mid-morning.

I checked out Black Friday last year and found that I couldn't leave the store fast enough.

I just heard a story on my local public radio station this morning about people lining up early for Black Friday deals. And when I say early, I mean early. According to the story, people have been camping out at a local Best Buy since last Friday. These people take vacation days from work and camp out waiting for the store to open on Black Friday. A week! Wow. You couldn't pay me to do this. I don't know what they are saving. A few hundred dollars? This is nuts.

As somebody who participates in Black Friday....I think those camp-out-for-a-deal people are crazy too.

Oh, I looked into Small Business Friday in my area, turns out a whole bunch of small businesses are working together and putting on their own Black Friday. May look into that.

A young woman and her brother got to a local best buy by me, pitched a tent and got on the news for being there since Monday.  They will take turns in the tent to be able to eat and attend to things like going to the bathroom.

I refuse to shop that weekend plain and simple!

I don't see it as any different than those people that camp out at electronic stores for the release of a new phone/game/computer systems.  However, I think they're crazy too.

I can't judge... I've waited in lines for midnight movies in ridiculous costumes, and done the tent thing for concert tickets. This was in my teen years though, so the lost pay wasn't quite the deal breaker :P

It's amazing how people devalue their own time. Compare the time spent (I want to say wasted) camping out in a BB parking lot vs the few dollars saved on some gadgets, along with the bragging rights for getting a "deal." I'm not spending 4-5 days of my vacation time in order to save a few dollars. It just doesn't make economic sense to me. (We're talking pennies-per-hour here.)

As for us, we're visiting family in Berkeley, CA for T-Day and will likely spend Friday in San Francisco doing touristy things -- not in a BB or other big retailer. Maybe a nice dinner at the Stinking Rose. We'll do some shopping on the drive back to LA on Sunday, stopping at our favorite winery. They're having a members-only preview of their holiday faire, with lots of wines, food and crafts for sale.

New plan. Friend and I are going to pretend we are still in college, get day time drunk on homemade wine and play Xbox. Soul Calibur and Beautiful Katamari to be exact. That is worth giving up a rare house-to-myself day. I am excited enough that i should probably be embarassed for myself.

This business of needing to be the first for the latest SmartPhone or whatever is nuts when you realize that six months from now there will be a better model that will be substantially cheaper because that is what happens to electronics and computer stuff.

The Black Friday thing is even crazier.   When I started working I was grateful for the day off to relax.  Pushing this earlier and earlier into Thanksgiving Day makes no sense at all.

Not to mention if you are a new hire at a retail store that is doing this you either show up on that day or lose your job.

I used to love Black Friday when it meant getting up at 4 or 5 am to shop. Now that most of the stores in my area open at 8pm on Thursday, I'll be skipping out. Luckily most of those places don't have anything I want anyway.

We do Thanksgiving at dinner time and hang out late. I will be hitting a couple of stores at 6am and I'll be home and back in bed by 9.

I had the thought of visiting several local museums, all of which have neato gift shops.   Maybe have a nice lunch-myself!-downtown.  Then I'm just writing Christmas cards (gotta get the international ones out this weekend), getting  things ready to ship, and writing on NaNo like a fiend.

We don't have a lot of bigger stores where I live and the ones we have can be fairly limited, but there is a craft fair and I love to got here on black Fridays just to see what is available.  I did most of my Christmas shopping way back in July and got a ton of books so I don't have much to buy, now, but I still love getting a few things.

I know people who have camped out at BB. They see it as a  time to bond with each other and meet new friends.  They enjoy the wait time. It wouldn't be my thing but who am I to decide that their time together in line lacked value? I am not thrilled with the shift in when Black Friday has started but I can't say vacation days camping with family members in front of BB is much different bonding wise from vacation days camping with family anywhere else.

I started my Black Friday shopping this morning with stocking up on laundry detergent (I did the same last year and still had 1 full container left, so it is time to get some more).

I volunteered to go in and work tonight from midnight to at least 4:00 am so I will be watching the show up close.  I might do some shopping after work, but it will depend on how I feel.

Have a happy Thanksgiving day everyone.

We had to do some shopping today, when it was discovered the turkey was too big for our roaster.  ::)

I saw that Kmart was out of a couple things I'd wanted tomorrow (they do a 3 day sale), so I went home and bought them online. I may do that in future "doorbuster days".

I did 10 stores in under 5 hours. Started at 5:15, done by 10:30. And I missed out on two things at the stores that opened at 9pm last night. My mom has poor knees so I get her Christmas stuff as well.

I am in need of a new car though. I had a ladder, a firebowl, $500 worth of tools crammed in there amongst other things. Thought about getting my son a little kitchen set but there was literally nowhere to put it. And I missed out on the poinsettias for the same reason.

A friend and I spent today supporting Small Business Saturday on my town's Main St. Coffee from a local coffee shop, dessert plates from an antique place, sweater from the consignment shop, presents for nieces and nephews from a cute toy store, t-shirts and Christmas decorations at a thrift store then the local bakery for nourishment.

I was pleased today to find some pajamas in my daughter's size, for the Black Friday price, as the store hadn't sold out yesterday. Her other jammas are getting short, so it's nice I'll be able to switch them out for near identicals.
