Title: What was your favorite gift this year?
Post by: siamesecat2965 on December 25, 2012, 12:33:20 PM
I got some really cool stuff from my mom, but a couple things really stood out and I love, so i was wondering what everyone else got, that they really like.

I got ove gloves; knit gloves with silicone to help grip hot pans etc.  My mom has them, and I've been using them all week. I know I'll get a lot of use out of them.  she also got me something whimsical, yet functional.  From the MOMA catalog, this leather kangeroo, which holds paper clips etc in its pouches, and can hold notes in its mouth. She thought it was cute, and that I'd like it, and she was correct!

I got a WooLee Winder (http://www.thewooleewinder.com/) for my spinning wheel.  I'm absolutely thrilled beyond words with it.  :)

I also went out and took advantage of a Christmas Eve sale at the local craft shop and bought myself a little pottery wheel, a bunch of sculpey and fimo, and some sculpey glaze.  I'm hoping to make it back to the store tomorrow to pick up more sculpey.  I'm almost through what I've got.

I haven't cracked into the pottery wheel yet, as I need to clean up my work space first.

Mr K and I got Little Knit a puppy toy that jumps around and barks.  She is completely in love.  We both knew she would be, though.  She fell in love with that thing the first time she saw it at the toy store.  I've got my money on Mr K breaking down and buying her a real puppy in about 5 years or so.  ;)

$50 gift card for Home Depot, my home away from home.   :)  This year has been a particularly expensive one for home repairs, and I guess my brother remembered my grumbling.

I love that (that your brother remembered, not that it's been expensive for repairs).  I find the very best/nicest gifts are the ones that come from someone who listened to you earlier in the year and remembered when it was time to buy a gift.  :)

Kindle Paperwhite :-) I am very excited about this... I never saw it coming, but always wanted an e-reader! I thought was beyond my reach with no smartphone or wi-fi, but apparently not!  My BF is getting lots of extra squeezes :-)

Also, my mom made each of us (4) kids a personalized 2013 calendar from shutterfly that is so awesome and thoughtful - I've looked through mine 17 times at least!

And Pop gave me a hot pink and yellow hoodie he picked especially for me... And surprisngly, I love it. And it was so cute he chose it himself with no Mom influence.

Hope everyone is having a lovely, relaxing, happy, peaceful day!

WulfieMan and WulfiePartner conspired together with one of my favorite needlework designers to get me the Echos of Elizabeth sampler kit http://www.gayannrogers.com/samplers1.html (http://www.gayannrogers.com/samplers1.html). I first saw this piece years ago when she taught it at a needlework conference but there was no way that I could take it as the conference was WAY more than I could afford and there was no guarantee that I could even get into the class. I had been hoping for a while that she would offer it for sale but when she did, there was only a couple of kits and they were sold out before I could get one.

I also got the miniature portrates of Mary, QoS and Bess of Hardwick. http://www.gayannrogers.com/girls.html (http://www.gayannrogers.com/girls.html) These are very special to me because I portray Bess of Hardwick at Ren Faires and we did the court of Mary, QoS for years. I wanted to get them when they went up for sale but due to being very sick at the time, I just could not handle it on top of the medical bills.

Both of these are a really big deal as the designer is her own publisher/mailing house and only sells her work 1-2 times a year. Even then, she only puts select pieces up for sale and a lot of times, only for a couple of hours!

My parents got DH and me a tabletop catapult kit. :) it also came with a little book with plans for miniature trebuchets, ballistae, and such. I know what I'll be working on in the back yard when it finally stops raining  :D (that would be around June...)

I realized a few months ago the I have the two newest Foo Fighter's CDs, and I have a number on their songs in mp3, but I don't have any of their older CDs. I asked DH for a card table, puzzle, box of my favorite k-cups and a Foo cd or two. He bought me FIVE of their older CDs.  ;D

He spoiled me because last year we were broke and decided to buy for the kids and extended family but not each other. I was fine with that, I didn't need or want anything, but he said it was nice to be able to splurge a little bit this year.

The most fun gift was the household gift of an electric keyboard.  It's a Yamaha, and has nearly 400 'voices' and special effects.  I had a blast playing with it yesterday!  The footsteps, screams, squeaking doors, heartbeats...  it's like it's almost designed to created haunted house effects.   ;D

Today we're picking up a rental motorcycle for Housemate's son, who's staying till after new year, and it's his major gift.  The roads here in Tasmania are almost designed for bikes, and he's never been here before, so it should be a great week of riding around and checking the scenery.

BG: A couple of months ago I decided to get Bagman a Kindle for his birthday, which was Nov. 29. My friend N. offered to lend me hers so I could get familiar with it and show Bagman how they work when I gave him his. Which I did.

My birthday was Dec. 11. N. and her family came for Christmas dinner, and N. presented me with a combination birthday/Christmas card that said, "Enjoy (Kindle's name)!" That's right, the loaner Kindle is now mine! That was my birthday present -- the accessories are my Christmas gift.

N.'s husband spent part of the afternoon getting my WiFi set up so I'm good to go downloading books to my new toy. If I were in "Dances With Wolves," my name today would be "Grins Like Fool."

BG: I stayed with a friend in Washington state while my sons were having hand/wrist surgery.  I stress bake, so I baked a LOT of cookies while I was there.  My friend also did not have any wooden spoons, but her grandson (16 months) managed to swipe one from her mother's house, and I used it all the time.

My friend gave me a wooden spoon with the words "Life is short, eat cookies" burned into it.

Of course, I also love the dog, who's technically a gift to my oldest son, but is really a family gift.

A few months ago, my sister and I stopped by a fashion outlet so she could get new shoes, and while we were there I decided to browse the scarves. She was curious, so I explained that scarves are my favorite accessory, but I have a really hard time finding ones that I don't find ugly or tacky, and that I'd spent the last few years looking for one that was a decent shade of darker green.

This morning, I got to open a bag containing a gorgeous mossy/forest green scarf with knit tassels. I wore it all afternoon; it's easily the most comfortable of my scarves.

Best Christmas present of the past few years.  ;D

I got some nice things but honestly some of my favorite gifts were ones that I gave to other people - and their reactions.  I gave my nephew some paperback books from a series he was reading and a blanket to snuggle under.  I got several hugs and he spent the better part of the afternoon reading.  I gave my niece a tutu and she declared it "just what I wanted". SInce she is just a preschooler she hasn't really learned to fake enthusiasm for gifts she doesn't like so when she says that you know you did well.  I also gave her some bath stuff and she asked a few times during the day if she couldn't go home and take a bath. Seeing them that enthusiastic about their gifts was really the best part for me.

My DH got me a huge jar of bath salts and a tray that lays across the tub while you take a bath. The tray holds a book and a space for a glass of wine or something. I love taking baths.

My grandma got me a gift certificate to the hair salon I always go to...I love that place!

My in-laws gave me a small serving bowl that is made of aluminum, made by a local artist. He is well known in our city for designing things with a sun face on it and it's just beautiful! (Here's my "buy local" plug: www.dondrummstudios.com)

Dh got me a Canon powershot! :D I hadn't even asked for a new camera though my Nikon coolpix's battery compartment had broke its catch (apparently a problem with them) so I'd been taping it down which can be a bit of a pain.

It came with a battery charger, small tripod, case, lens cleaner and an SD card! I also got 3 $10 gift cards for Amazon, a check from my MIL, fuzzy socks, kitty slippers, pirate pj's (black top, gray pants with black skulls and crossbones on them.) and Minnie Mouse pj's.  She attached gift receipts to everything which is good cause I'm not a huge Minnie fan but she said the Animal pj's I said I liked weren't available in my size at her Target so I'll see if I can find them at ours. :)

My favorite gift is without a doubt Jiji, the  1 year old American Short Hair Boyfriend got for me.

Jiji was confiscated by the city police in August, his previous owners had chained him up outside in their yard with no shelter, food, or water. He was also found with injuries on his face from either trying to escape or fighting off other animals. (They've since healed ). While at the shelter he took so badly to being in a cage that he would rub against the bars causing his face to become swollen. Eventually he had to be moved to a larger cage meant for the cats that have been at the shelter a long time and need the space, but no one showed any interest in adopting him.

1) No one wanted a black cat (which are the hardest to adopt out and the ones most commonly put to sleep)
2) him being a young very energetic cat with no prior 'home' kitty etiquette.

He's litter trained but was behaving in a 'play fighting' manner at the shelter, so no one wanted to adopt him knowing he might take effort to train. Since he was kept chained outside for the first 6 months of his life I believe he just has no concept of the sort of behavior an older cat who had a prior home life would have had.

Because he was being overlooked for so long he was listed as an 'urgent adoption' and it sounds like he was getting close to having to be put down as a combination of people just not showing interest in him and him becoming worse off from being kept in cage after cage.

We adopted him this past weekend with the shelter volunteers warning us he isn't a 'lap cat' and witnessing his play fight behaviors. everyone really loved Jiji but he was getting harder to adopt the longer he was kept in cages without any training.

From the moment he was in our home it was like he lived here all along. All he's done is lay with Boyfriend and I, purr in our laps, and stay by our feet. He mews and chatters with us like he's having a perfectly logical conversation. His previously excitable behavior has toned down drastically and he has not nibbled or scratched once. It's like he just came right in and was home right away. No time to 'adjust', no hiding under the sofa, no being scared and nervous, he just fit right into our home right away and spent the whole of Sunday begging for tummy rubs.

Everyone at the shelter will be so happy to know how amazingly well he's come into our lives and see that he's like a completely different cat. He's loving, playful, and just such a wonderful little furry guy that I can't believe no one would give him a chance. He's just a wonderful pet to have and I am so glad that we where able to give him a good home.

I plan on making a big batch of cookies to bring over to the shelter volunteers this weekend, they knew Jiji was a good guy and just needed someone to give him a chance.

A mug from a good friend that says "friends are the family you choose". Sounds completely cheesy- but given the treatment I've had over the years from much of my "family", compared to the long friendships I have with a few of my good friends- not entirely inappropriate. Another friend, who's extended family didn't even phone her on Xmas never mind invite her over anywhere, agreed. She's family to me :)

My dad asked me for wish lists for my family. I gave nice varied lists so they could choose price/style, and we could be surprised. We were definitely surprised when we got everything on our lists!

My husband arranged for deep clean from a housekeeping service. They are coming next week!

Like Sharnita, my very favorite gift is one I gave. I bought a horseback riding session at a local stable for my 6 y/o niece. Her reaction to a gift certificate wasn't great (she can't read yet), but once her mom told her what it was for, she was pretty darn excited!

On the receiving end: A baseball and batting helmet each with autographs of about 20 current and former Twins (Major League Baseball) players.

On the giving end: A home-made ornament with a Tuba on it, given to a cousin who is the only Tuba player in his high school marching band.  He was thrilled.

A bright orange hooded sweatshirt with a big, bold 'Brooklyn' across the front.  On the ships, we like to be boosters for our town and my sweats were getting a little old.

Actually, everything we received was great.  Nephew sent a three pack of good wine, SIL provided neat socks and a set of tea towels that are gorgeous and Niece provided more socks as well as a bottle of chili vinegar that is evil, I tell you, evil.  :D

A Kindle Fire HD! Love it! I already have a 10" Toshiba Thrive and it is awesome but it is a bit bulky for carrying around. I can just slip the Kindle in my purse and off I go :)
I've already played a game on it and read my first book on it, as well as browsed the web a bit :)

I got this one early but every time I hear the sound it makes, I declare "I love that door!" LOL  I got a dog door a couple of weeks ago and it is so awesome not having to get up and let the dog and cat in and out fifty times a day!

My favorite received:  a Le Cresuet Dutch oven. I wanted one for a long time but DH hates to give gifts that can be perceived as 'housework' gifts.  I was very excited to open it yesterday. I'm running out to buy something to cook in it today.

Favorite gift given:  my youngest niece spent all of Thanksgiving crawling after my dog and saying 'how how.' So, for Christmas, we got her a stuff dog.  The look on her face when my sister I law unwrapped it was priceless.  She started saying 'how how' and grabbed the dog and squeezed it and that was it.  Nothing else mattered to her.  Glad I was able to make a 1 year old so happy.

My favorite gift was what I gave my Dad.  We had been in the same poker tournament around Thanksgiving.  It is something we both enjoy, but they live an hour away so we don't do it together often.  He got first and I got second.  On the last hand, he trapped me by merely calling my big blind when he had AK-suited.  A friend of ours took a photo.   I printed the photo and put it in a black frame with lots of flat area.  I went to the scrapbooking area and got a set of poker 3-D sticker and set of "Dad" ones.  I put the 3D stickers around the frame.  Dad really really liked it.

My DH got me a WindowFarm! I'd been planning to make one for months but its a hassle and hadn't gotten around to it, so a nice kit was very welcome!

And my gift to DH was kinda a gift to me too.  He gets very anxious driving and regarding directions and ends up getting very angry and freaked out if anything deviates from the Google directions and its just becoems downright unpleasant.  So I got him a Garmin GPS, which he loves but will hopefully make my trips with him that much less annoying for me.

My DS is almost 3 and this is the first year he's really been excited over presents. He gasped and then squealed in delight when he unwrapped an Angry Birds t-shirt I got him. No subsequent present got quite the same reaction of glee from him.

Since we can't afford a sous-vide machine, my DH got me a temperature controller to sous-vide in my crock pot. I can't wait to try it out!

I got a vertical roaster from my sister ( http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-Stainless-Vertical-Roaster-Infuser/dp/B00004UE6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356555499&sr=8-1&keywords=norpro+vertical+roaster ).  It had been one of the items on my wishlist so I am quite happy. Last night I looked through my Cook's Illustrated magazines until I found the recipe I remembered: Peruvian Garlic-Lime Chicken (from the March/April 2011 edition). I am going out tomorrow to pick up the ingredients I don't have and am looking forward to this!

I also liked the reactions on the gifts I gave almost better. In the discussion I started about ideas for wrapping gift cards I got some great ideas. So ... my sister (of the roaster gift) got hers, a gift card contribution for a bicycle she has wanted for a couple of years, had hers in a lovely gift bag filled with tissue paper that hid a snazzy bike helmet. Inside the helmet was a wrapped deck of used bicycle playing cards. Inside that I had hidden the gift card, snugly tucked in the center. It took her forever to follow my instructions to "keep digging" and "show us how to play solitaire" until she found it. She laughed and laughed and laughed, and later thanked me, telling me the wrappings and unwrappings were almost more fun than the gift.

My brother got his gift card inside a small salad spinner that was stuffed with tissue paper hiding the two limes and the card. The spinner was wrapped and also in another gift bag stuffed with more tissue paper. His instructions were to "keep digging." He also loved it.

My other sister was suffering pretty badly from depression over not having money and having run out of cigarettes the day before. While I despise smokers and smoking I took compassion on her and insisted she open her gift from me before others got there. She also got a gift card (a Visa) inside a make-up bag. She loved it! I drove her over to an open liquor store and she bought two packs of her favorite Marlboros, and between that and the microscope she got from my sister she had the best day ever.

So I feel good. I was dreading the day but my gifts, and their reactions, lifted me up immediately, more so than my gifts, all of which I really like.

Hehe. My family has always wrapped gifts in other boxes, so we had a little mild fun with ds, age 3, when he unwrapped what appeared to be a floor lamp. I said "Oh, DS, is that a lamp of your very own?" He replied very sweetly, "Can I put it in my room?" before we showed him how to open the box and look inside.

Best. Gift. Ever! for both you and JiJi. He' a pretty boy!

I got a huge spontaneous hug from middle son (age 14).

OK, not completely spontaneous--he had just opened my gift to him, which was an iPod touch (he totally was not expecting).  He's one of those who thinks he can figure out his gifts beforehand so I wrapped a note in a tiny box (the size that would hold a ring) which directed him to where I had actually hidden it.  I also gave him a baseball-looking case (he plays baseball avidly and has been doing workouts w/ the coach of the high school team and a lot of other young men) and a $15 card to start him with tunes and apps.

I am the world's worst gift choser (1 out of 3 successes is a really good average for me) and I am really hard to buy for.

I loved the Innocent Ladies Muscato wine from Australia that our daughter served at Thanksgiving - she calls it 5 Drunk Ladies because even women that don't drink had 2 glasses each and the nondrinkers got a little high, so I received 2 bottles!

Our granddaughter - 10 - got a Blingles kit from Santa and was working on it here. I said that it was really cool and it really looked like fun; wish I had one. Then the 6 year old had her Pillow Pet and I laughed and said I actually thought for a couple of minutes about getting the unicorn for myself. The family went to Walmart for some necessities and to spend part of their Christmas cash, and did shopping for my birthday (Jan 21) - a Blingles and the unicorn Pillow Pet. My wine glasses never looked better - I've been playing. Son asked me if I felt young - no, but I feel silly and indulged.

The bag they brought it in says, "Dream Big!" on it, so I looked at Lucas and said, making sure that Son and his Wife were listening, that I would really like an all electric car. Daughter in Law said, "Keep dreaming." Oh well, I tried.

All of my gifts were awesome, but I looooove the blanket my grandma gave me. It's white and fluffy on the side that's on me, and the top is silky feeling and giraffe print. I'm always freezing my butt off, but that keeps really toasty warm and it's so fun to touch! It's this blanket: http://www.amazon.com/Northpoint-Sherpa-Throw-White-Tiger/dp/B004AE2J0G/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1356581205&sr=8-11&keywords=northpoint+blanket , in case anyone wants to know.

My husband paid my car payment for me (but I think he paid off the car!!!) I only have (had) 8 months left on it.
Which is pretty  cool.
Now we are debt free, until I pay off my discover card for Christmas, which will be done in January :) :) :) :)

I read that first as you wanting an electric guitar and wondered why you should keep dreaming :) That is cool you got toys; i got some, too, including a stuffed Sully (from Monsters, Inc.) that Gish tricked me into thinking was for his 4 year old niece. He is meant to be a protector for my camper :)
The funniest of all my gifts is a hat that Gish got me. I think i have mentioned before that when the Husky is being a pain my usual threat to him is, "Dog, if you keep it up i am going to make a very beautiful and disturbing hat out of your head and use your feet for mittens." Somewhere Gish found a hat that is made to look like a husky's head and it has little mittens attached. Gish thinks it is hideous, but he knew i would love it. I can't stop laughing about it.

I love Jiji's story! :) And the name too, reminds me of the cat in Kiki's Delivery Service, voiced by the late Phil Hartman.

We got a very cool electric self basting roaster. :D Ours died at Tgiving so we had to cook the turkey in the oven instead and wake up to baste it every few hours during the night.

And even today I still am in shock, with little waves of excitement coming and going. I really hope it doesnt all hit me at once so I have to Squee.

My favorite gift this year was one we gave DS (almost 12). He asked for a laptop to help him with his schoolwork. A new laptop was not in our gift budget, and I had to tell him that.  :(  Then, a couple of weeks before Christmas, DH's employer announced they were having a surplus computer sale. They sell off their surplus a couple of times every year, and laptops were included in this particular sale. They announce the opening of the sale at a specific time, and the computers usually go very fast because the prices are so good. You have to be quick to get in on it. I was ready and waiting for them to announce the opening of the sale, and I managed to snag one of the laptops. It's an older model, but it's well maintained and will meet DS's needs.

The only glitch was that it was stripped before the sale, so I had to set up the OS and purchase and install word processing software. I am so not a techie! Five days before Christmas, there I was trying to install all this stuff. Somehow, I figured out how to work around a few problems and get it done. I was rather impressed with myself.  ;)

As soon as I had it set up, I wrapped the laptop in a big box and put it under the tree right away. DS saw the box and was so excited about it. All he talked about in the days leading up to Christmas was what could be in that box. He could hardly contain his excitement.

When he opened the box on Christmas morning, he was completely shocked to see the laptop. He said, "Really? For me?" He could hardly believe his eyes. I'm happy that we were able to make it happen for him. The excitement he felt about the mysterious box and the look on his face when he opened it are priceless. For him, it was magical. It made my Christmas, and it was definitely my favorite gift.

My favorite gift was actually ones I gave away - three sets of beef jerky for three darn picky people. I was rather proud of myself. I researched beef jerky online (who knew there is a beef jerky review website?) and found a company out of Pennsylvania. They were a big hit with my family.

It's so hard to narrow it down... my stepmother can be rather touchy about my close relationship with my Dad, and she's usually extra upset around the holidays (for various reasons). We have never made it through a Christmas without some yelling or fighting, sometimes directed at me, sometimes not. So for the last few years, Dad has taken to getting me fewer and fewer things (and not bigger ticket items either), because it's better to go through Christmas without many presents and without a huge screaming argument than with both.

This year, I opened my door at my house and found two boxes from Amazon about a week before Christmas. Thinking it was presents I had ordered, I opened the first one to find it was two movies (A Muppet Christmas Carol and Princess Mononoke) and a comic from my Amazon wishlist. I immediately called Dad to thank him, and he told me to wait longer before I opened the next one. They day before I drove up for the holidays, I opened that one, and it was two volumes of D'Aulaire's books of mythology (Greek and Norse), a bunch of manga, and several volumes of the Gargoyles comic books.

And at home, I got The Complete Calvin and Hobbes boxset. And my stepmother took me out to buy me a professional coat, and I got a gorgeous black wool one.

I love the gift from the grandchildren.

My DD's went to Wal-Mart with a bunch of pictures of each of their children from newborn to now. They scanned the pictures and assembled them in a little book about the size of a Little Golden Book. The last page has 5 pictures, me holding each of the kids and inscribed  "Merry Christmas from [the kids's individual names].

My heart is just mushy.  ;D

My favorite gift was from my dad. He does metalworking and woodworking as a hobby, and he's really, really talented. And my favorite hobby is cooking. So for Christmas, he made me a chef's knife with a Damascus steel blade and an ebony handle (for those who don't know, Damascus steel is about the best material you can have for a knife like that; a knife like the one he made me would go for upwards of $150 in a store). It's far better than anything I'd ever hoped to own for my kitchen, and the fact that my dad made it for me makes it about 50 times better.

Second best, I'm planning to adopt a cat in January, and my grandparents gave me some money to pay the adoption fee at the shelter and get some kitty accessories. BF gave me a scratching post and says he'll help me buy a litter box since I have a relatively small apartment and I want to get a good one to minimize smell.

I also got "A Feast of Ice and Fire", the "Song of Ice and Fire" cookbook, which is awesome. When I get home, I'm going to make honey-roasted chicken and black bread for dinner! And about $100 in gift certificates to Amazon, which is always fun. More books ! ::rubs hands together in glee::

My favorite gift is a Coach purse that my boyfriend gave me!  It is absolutely beautiful!!  I've wanted one for years, but never would allow myself to spend that much money on something that wasn't needed.  He tried to buy me one around my birthday, but I wouldn't let him.  This purse is bigger and more elaborate than what I was looking at, top of the line!  He laughingly told me that this is what I get for not letting him spend money on me previously.  I feel so spoiled!   ;D

DH and I have been saving for well over a year for a new roof.  I am so sick of leaks!  Well a few weeks ago him and a coworker got 5 numbers on the lotto.  Our roof will be replaced the second week in January!  I got a B Makowsky bag and a coach wallet I have been drooling over.  DS got a laptop and DH is very happy with his kindle paperwhite.

DS was very surprised with the laptop but I think his biggest surprise was his new hockey skates.  He had been showing me the pair he wanted forever.  About 3 weeks ago he wanted to show me one more time.  So we went in the  pro shop and they were gone!  He was really disappointed and I was giddy because they were safe at home in my closet.

I received a Keurig coffee maker and 3 boxes of the pods.  I had seen it back in November and DH had asked me if I wanted to buy one.  Since I am the only coffee drinker in our family there was no way I was paying that kind of money for a fancy-schmancy coffee maker  :P!  Of course that was the gift DH gave me on Christmas eve.  I adore the coffee and DH for getting me something I really love but am too cheap to buy for myself.

The best gift was the money for the new cell phone for DIL.  Her phone was over 4 years old and literally falling apart.  You should have seen her face when DH and I gave her the money to replace it.  (Our DS is in the Air Force and stationed in OK for aircrew training.  DIL is in ND waiting for him to get done so they can move to WA state, and they talk on the phone every night.)  She went back to ND on Wednesday and already replaced the phone (and called us to tell us thanks again).

My DH gave me a Microsoft Surface this year!  I was totally not expecting it!  I've been playing with it and showing it off to people all week!

My favorite gift that I gave was to my best friend.  We had gone to a sample sale in November, and she'd seen a necklace/earring set that she loved, but even at 50% off it was a little expensive, and we hadn't brought a lot of cash with us.  So she didn't get it.  I made note, went back the next day, and it was still there, plus they took an additional percent off at the register!  When she opened it, her eyes got really big and she almost started crying.  ;)  I got a text from her a couple of days later saying that everyone was complimenting her on it and thanking me again.  It was awesome to make her so happy!

REading about the gifts here, where thought and caring have gone into the choice for the recipient, and the recipient LOVES the gift and is so happy to get it - to me, this is what Christmas is really about.  I'm not religious in any way.  I'm a 'cultural Christian'.  I love the old Christmas carols, I love the family get togethers (the happy ones...), and I love, love, love, see great gifts exchanged that make giver and receiver happy.  THIS is what makes my personal Christmas a good one.

These are my favorite sneaky stories.

I confess to feeling a bit of guilt, bcs the kid is SO disappointed, and you could head that off by telling them. But it just doesn't seem quite as mean as it could be. And the "high" later is worth it.

As a Washingtonian, I hope that they love it here and that you come to our beautiful state. Soon and often!

Me too, but mine's red. I'm going to make a pie crust first. :) A friend gave me her secret recipe.

https://www.orderforeverlazy.com/  one piece fleece jammies/lounge wear with matching socks.  I love it! It even has a hood which I wear to keep my head warm (cold head= a migraine for me). I look like a demented teletubby but I am warm and comfy!

DH is thinking about getting one for himself and using it as long underwear that is not in 2 parts so no gapping and cold back when he is bending over outside.

The best part? They were on closeout at a closeout store so only cost $10 LOL (I picked out all of my gifts this year.)

I NEED that! Our entire family was gifted Snuggies, and they're great, but I can't stand my back being cold so it does me no good when I have to get up (and it isn't quite big enough to wrap around myself like a robe - I've tried).

Love it! I just learned the trick of putting chicken breasts in the stand mixer for shredded chicken. Works way better than a food processor!

My nephew made me a duct tape wallet with my name on it in Sharpie. I love it and it's perfect for my id, debit card and some cash.

My favourite present was my Ted Baker Elaney purse. It's not my usual style - I'm very much into elegant understatement - but I just fell for it. I was on the verge of buying a "mummy purse" with enough room for everything and then I saw these. All the functionality with bags of personality.

I'm not going to lose that at the bottom of my handbag!

I didn't really have anyone to shop for this year. My favourite gift that I gave was to my personal trainer. We had agreed a limit of 5. I ordered him a "free" mug from Vistaprint naming him as the best personal trainer in the world ever, as certified by at least one client and probably his mum. I also made tokens, laminated credit card sized tokens. One was headed "silent client" and said if he handed over that voucher I would immediately stop talking and be quiet for the rest of the session. "Late bate abate" said: "Are you running really late? As in, more than your usual five minutes? Are you getting That Look? Hand over this voucher for instant forgiveness." His reaction to that was: "Wait, I only get one of these???" ;D

Today, I found a post-Christmas gift that's a hoot.

Down by the mailboxes, there was a book with a sticky note that said, 'Please take'.  When I saw the title, I couldn't resist.

'The Dead Celibrity Cookbook Presents. Christmas in Tinseltown : Celebrity Recipes and Hollywood Memories from Six Feet Under the Mistletoe'.

The stories are interesting and many of the recipes look good.

Thanks to whoever got this for Christmas and didn't want it.

I got lots of lovely presents, but my favourite was a charity gift that my DMIL got me.

The charity pays a woman in a refuge camp to knit warm clothes for the children in the camp.  So she is earning a living to support her family and the children in the camp stay warm   :D

As an improving knitter it meant a lot to me.

Oh Wulfie, that's SO pretty! What a beautiful gift!

So having worn it almost daily since getting it (actually had to get dressed a few times and wash it  ;D) I will say it works! The pros: very warm, easy to go potty in, the hood is perfect for keeping my head warm.  The cons: it sheds a little and is a bit static-y (I kept finding blue fuzz in my hair and it sticks to my legs when fresh from the dryer despite using a dryer sheet.)

But I liked it enough to buy a second one for me (and got a free one for DH who actually tried mine on and liked it.)  Very long shipping time, though (2 weeks.. and it will be getting here at almost the 2 week mark).

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on the site much for the last couple of weeks.  My favorite gifts this year were sets of Luigi Bormioli Black Swirl highballs and double old fashions, and my very own copy of Brave!

This wasn't a gift, or at least one that could be unwrapped, but my favorite part of Christmas was watching my children's partners playing a card game.

My mother and I would always play this card game while waiting for dinner to cook. We were very aggressive about it, with lots of calling out to my father in the living room, accusing the other of cheating. You could practically hear the Star Trek fighting music in the background.

This year was the first time my son's girlfriend came for the holiday, so we taught her the game and she caught on very quickly and played with me, my daughter, and her boyfriend. There were lots of accusations and more laughter.

So these two young people, who are part of my family but never got to meet my mother, are now part of a tradition that I shared with her.

That made me very happy--and a tad weepy.

My family don't do a lot of gifts, by mutual agreement, but I got a small, delightful present in the mail today: two individually wrapped candied chestnuts (marrons glaces):

I had tried marrons glaces gelato in December, and posted to my blog about being surprised and pleased by it, and a friend of mine happened to see these in the store and thought "Tea Drinker," so she got them for me.

I have opened and eaten one, and quite enjoyed it: but the pleasure is at least as much "she saw these and thought of me" as the having of them. (I live in New York, I could almost certainly find candied chestnuts, but it didn't occur to me to look for them. To go back to the gelato store, yes.)

Nice!

My husband got me a Keurig with holiday coffee... eggnog? gingerbread? Yes please!

The Complete National Geographic software, on DVDs. :) I've wanted this for a few years now, and having most of the catalog on hand is amazing!  Pretty pictures, and interesting stories.  I totally didn't see it coming, either! :D

I am in late.   My husband and his parents got together and got me an iPad.   Which I absolutely adore.  DH and I had decided we couldn't swing one, but his folks usually send us money which we split and each get something.   Last year I gave him my half so he could get a new tripod and camera bag.   I had zero expectation that he would give me his half this year-we both agreed last year with no expectation that he needed to somehow pay me back, but he said I have wanted one so long that he wanted to get one for me.   I love that man!!!

I may have something even better than the Home Depot card.  My best friend and I finally exchanged Christmas gifts, and she gave me this:

http://www.aerogarden.com/catalog/product/view/id/73/s/aerogarden-7-black/

She has been growing herbs in one for several years.  It came with a set of herb plugs, but I'm going to see if I can save money by replacing only the plugs.

Magicdomino, I have an Aerogarden and I LOVE it.  I use it constantly.  You can also get extensions for the light so you can grow tomatoes (which get taller) and empty plugs, so you can put whatever seeds you like in them.  I had a massive supply of fresh basil for a long, long time LOL.
