Title: "Your ring tone is really annoying!"
Post by: Calistoga on March 07, 2013, 09:57:37 AM
I've run in to this particular issue many times in many different forms.

"Your ring tone is so annoying! You need to change it!"

My phone used to whistle like an old man, which I thought was adorable, but people kept telling me to change it, so I eventually did. But is there really a case where it's rude to have an annoying ring tone? I know plenty of people with horrible ones- screaming, annoying songs, etc- but it seems way out of line to say "You're ring tone bugs me, change it/turn your phone off/put it on vibrate."

Honestly, I find everyone's ring tones annoying when I am out in public. My phone is always on vibrate. I think so many people have their phones on so loud, especially people like my mom who is slightly hard of hearing.

I would never say anything to anyone about their ring tone except my best friend. We were out last weekend and her phone started playing Jingle Bells. I may have made a mocking comment about it being March and being a little early for Christmas music.

Well, I have Fanfare for the Common Man as my ringtone, and sometimes I forget to turn my phone down to a decibel level intended for awake human beings (I have it on a super - loud setting to wake me up) and then I make myself jump because it really is that loud. If it was really annoying for the people I was around to keep hearing Fanfare for the Common Man, I'd probably change it to something less obtrusive. But, on the flip side, I know that it's my phone ringing, since no one else of my acquaintance has that ringtone.

I would tell my husband or child that their ringtone was too annoying, but I would not tell anyone else. I have sensitive hearing and some of my DH's ringtones have been beyond obnoxious.

My best friend has a text message alert that startles me every time, but I would never ask her to change it.

I would never tell a stranger/coworker to change their ringtone.  Many have commented on mine but more the lines of, "Wow that is so scary sounding".

It's the tripod sound from War of the World.

I've had people kind of laugh at mine.  Around Halloween I was in a Joann fabrics when my bff texted me and with that phone I could set a different text alert for different people.  For her it was a witch cackle.  (She loves witches)

The cashier heard it and chuckled and said it was appropriate for the season!  Course it was that way year round, but yeah it was funny given the time of the year. :)

With my new phone, my general ringtone is "seaside".  It was one of the phone's factory options and it does sound like you're at the beach with waves and gulls.  For bff it's the Wicked Witch of the West music. :)

Someone up here at work has a whistle of some sort (not clear if it's supposed to be human or bird). He gets calls a lot. It annoys the livin' shiz out of me. I should not be able to hear your ring tone outside your office.

Haha Everybody has an annoying ringtone! Everyone finds everyone else's ringtones irritating! Apart from a traditional, medium volume riiiing riiiing tone (like a conventional telephone), I think pretty much all ringtones are annoying. Especially anything involving crazy frog or an irritating cheesy pop song. But it's not a big deal. On the list of things to get irritated about, it's very very low priority.

* I do however think an above poster who set her ringtone to a witches cackle on Halloween is pretty cool. That would make me smile if I heard it.

I can't imagine telling anyone to change their ringtone, but for a friend or coworker I might ask them to turn the volume down or put it on vibrate if it keeps going and they aren't available/willing to answer it.

The best ringtone I heard was in a diner -- someone had the Old Spice whistle. Awesome.

The owner of the bakery I work for occasionally has the ringtone that yells "Hey Answer your phone!  Hello! Hello!  Answer your phone!"

Nothing says professional cake shop like hearing that on blast when you're ordering a $$$$ wedding cake and desserts.

When I took DS's old phone, I kept all of the ringtones for his contacts. I didn't think they would be so awful.

The default ring tone was a lady screaming. It was from a horror movie.

The one for my mother was a police siren. When I was driving, I always forgot and started pulling over.

I have a new phone now.

It wasn't just for Halloween, it was year round, but at that time of the year it was even more fun! :)

I have to have a ringtone that's a bit more personalized.  Otherwise when other people's phones rang I'd be pulling it out to make sure it wasn't mine.  My notification for when I get emails is a bird chirp and texts is a ship's bell.

I would never comment on someone else's ringtone, other than to say "that's interesting".  I think it's rude to comment on a ringtone, I wouldn't comment on someone's choice of jewelry I guess I think it's similar.

My phone plays Jingle Bells year round - I hear lots of things.  I also have some specialized ringtones for others:

ex MIL - Addams Family
my kids - Jeopardy
latest fling - Baby Your Baby by George Strait
my brothers - Troubador by George Strait
best friends - Thank You for Being A Friend
my office - Attitude Adjustment by Hank Williams, Jr

I mostly get chuckles and I don't really care what someone thinks about my choice of ringtones.  Surely there are more important things going on in the world...

I've heard screaming babies, dogs barking, loud bells, some type of alarm sound, etc., yes I find some of them annoying, but really to comment on someone's ring tone - how annoying is that!

It depends on the context as to whether someone else can tell you that you should change an annoying ring tone, but I do think that the whistling one is one of the most annoying.

The polite thing is to not have your ringtone be audible by other people when in public--maybe in a grocery store its OK, but I shouldn't have to hear someone else's cell in a restaurant.

For the longest time my husband had a croaking frog as his ringtone.  And not just any croaking frog, but the one that would sit under the downspout on our front porch.  It was a common sound to hear in the summer.  So, when I started hearing it year round it messed with my sense of seasons and I asked him to change it!

Just yesterday I was getting off a flight in Minneapolis and I was hearing the Darth Vader theme from Star Wars.  My first thought was "that sounds ominous."  And then the woman in front of me dug her phone out to answer it...

I really only mind a ringtone if it alarms/misdirects me in some way. One of my coworkers has a mewing-cat ringtone that nearly sent me running into the halls to see a kitten that wasn't there. (Oddly, I had no problem with his other animal ringtone—generally, horses don't climb stairs.  :P)

That's one reason I wouldn't record any of my kids' voices.  I know that instead of checking my phone, my first reaction (if they weren't with me) would be to whip my head around, wondering where they were. Especially on my "day off" when DH stays home with them and I take the opportunity to do stuff I can't really do with the kids.   I'd be in the craft store wondering how they found me!

I've only commented on a ringtone, once.  My coworker whose office was next door had a painfully shrill ringtone, set to the highest volume he could get on his phone.  And then he'd leave his office without his phone and his wife would call him.  But she never left voicemails -- instead she'd call back over and over and over again until she got him.  One day this went on for nearly half an hour.  I tried closing his door and my door, but that ring was still disturbing me.

I asked him to turn down his ringer, and he said no.  I asked him to remember to bring his phone with him, and he said no.
Instead, he started calling his own number and letting it ring whenever he felt like annoying me.

I had to go to my office manager, who went to our department head.  Department head is not fond of personal calls or loud ringtones, so coworker was forced to change his ways.

But I think my example is pretty extreme.  Mostly, I'm amused by people's ringtones -- the day I heard the theme from "Mission: Impossible" playing from a coworker's phone, I actually laughed a little because, well, he's not exactly Jim Phelps.

Ringtones need to be audible and distinctive to be effective.  I'm on board.

It's out of line to whine 'O. M. G.  I so hate that Katy Perry song.  You have to change it to something by Pink or Lady Gaga.'

But if it's of such a nature that people are regularly commenting - and not positively - about it, I believe it would be polite to consider changing to something else.  You (general you) know it bothers others - probably many more who don't comment than those who do - and it's only serving your own purpose.  Why not be considerate and change it to something else you like?

That's the kind of ringtone I want.  But my carrier doesn't have them in their store, and there's no way to import ringtones you don't buy directly from them.  So I'm stuck with freaking music samplers.  Does my MP3 player ring at you?  No?  Then why should my phone play @#*$&^# music?

There's a guy in my office whose ring tone is a voice (which I assume is his very young daughter's) saying, "Ring Ring Ring.... Ring Ring Ring". It is extremely annoying. Even if he picks it up on the first ring, which doesn't always happen. He sits close enough to me that I can hear it every single time it rings. But no, I've never said anything. Well. Not to him anyway.

My ring tone is The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It's unique enough that I know it's my phone that's ringing. Except once I had that music playing at home and forgot it was going to come up in the mix and started to answer my phone when it started playing! D'oh! Usually, though, unless I'm at home, my phone is on vibrate.

Personally, I could care less what someone's ring tone is. What bugs me is people who won't or don't turn it down, esp at work. My one boss is guilty of this. for the longest time it was a song, one which I could not stand. Now its simply a loud phone ringing, and her text message alert is annoying as well. My issue with her is that she is a special snowflake who will not put her phone on vibrate. ever. so we all have to listen to it all day long...she's been spoken to about it but it falls on deaf ears.

If I'm out at the mall, or somewhere ese in public, as long as I'm not at a movie or something like that, as long as its answered, doesn't really bother me. But if I'm at my other job, trying to help a customer, and their hpone keeps going off, I get a tad annoyed. I'm giving you my time and attention, you should extend the same courtesy to me.

I always keep my phone on vibrate at work, but every now and then I forget. For Halloween my ringtone was from Psycho, and i forgot to turn it off, so it rang one day at work. Oops.

I do think it's rude to have an annoying/loud ring tone in a place where people can't escape it, like at work.  The coworker in a cubicle next to mine has a whistle ringtone that goes off every time she receives a text, which is at least twice an hour.  My work requires concentration and it makes me batty.  Even headphones won't block it out, because it's so high-pitched.  I really wish she'd show some consideration and turn it down or change it to vibration or something that blends in with the background noise more easily.

Quite a few people in my office have work-provided iPhones, and most of them leave the sounds to their defaults. A phone goes off and several people all check their phones. The first thing I did with mine was change the alert tones. Now if I can just get it to a volume that I can hear but isn't deafening, I'll be happy.

For my personal phone, I have a profile manager app that will change default ringtones/volume levels/etc depending on rules I set, or I can change profiles manually. So much easier!

My phone is always on vibrate for many reasons (I find most if not all the default ringtones on my phone annoying, for one, and for another, I'm losing my hearing so I can't hear most of the ringtones anyways.)

Anthony's ringtone is some flamenco music that we both like.  My alarm tone is ducks quacking.

I think that's a good line to draw.

Not liking that particular song?  Not a problem.  Multiple people think that it's insanely annoying - yeah, changing it is polite.

The single most annoying ring tone I've encountered was the phone's owner screaming "Mommy" in a piercing at increasingly loud volumes.

I would also say that ringtones that involve things like profanity or racial insults should not be used.

As an aside - there's one of the standard ringtones that I absolutely loathe.  I think it's called "roll on". But the reason I hate it is because it's the loudest of the default ring-tones, and therefore the one I use for an alarm clock while travelling. So I associate it with being awoken from jetlag induced slumber into a state of queasy disorientation.

I have told one person to either keep the phone on vibrate at all times or change the ringtone.  It was a LOUD crying baby that you could hear through walls and closed doors.

An old phone had some nice smooth jazz options and when my phone would ring in my locker library volunteers would go, "Oh that's nice.". I started keeping my phone on vibrate because it would chirp a missed call notice and that was really annoying.

DH's old phone had the ring tone for my calls set to "Stars and Stripes Forever."  One time he and then 14 y.o. DS1 were at a computer-users related activity and he hadn't set it on vibrate when I called.  The meeting paused while everyone clapped and stomped their feet in time . . . whoops.

Another time I was in a small store and the proprietor's purse started screeching.  I immediately thought, "That is the coolest ring tone I have ever heard!"  She starts crooning, "Oh, there there, you're just tired, aren't you?" and scoops out her daughters' pet sugar glider.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_glider

I almost never have my phone's ring set to audible:  all vibe, all the time.  I can't hear my ring tones, but I can hear the vibrations.  My Dude has his set to various degrees of annoying.  I used to gripe at him about some of the sounds, but quickly figured out that this was not a hill worth dying on.  He was oddly defensive about them.

I've never been offended by someone's ringtone, but I do find it rude when people let their phones ring and ring and ring, rather than checking it and hitting "ignore" or similar.

At one point, all of us at work got the same new phone and for the first time, downloadable ringtones were possible.  (We didn't end up doing it because you had to pay for it on the bill, which work wasn't willing to do.)

But on the website, one of the guys found a ringtone that was a male but effeminate voice saying, 'Brian, your phone is ringing.  Briiiiaaan, your phone is ringing.'  Cracked us all right up, especially with one of the guys being named Brian.  He was going to download the ring tone and we were going to call him when he was out in the field.  Because we are all 12 year old boys like that.

Another coworker had a phone set to a giggling baby.  Freaked me right out, that one.

Agreed. It's sort of like the old rule that if one person tells you you're drunk, you can say you're not, but if half a dozen people tell you you're drunk, you should go lie down. There are always a few special snowflakes who don't like something perfectly innocuous, but if it's a common complaint, the tone is probably not appropriate.

I agree that things that should be avoided include:
- profanity/vulgar terms
- anything obviously racist/sexist or similar
- sirens or warnings
- very loud noises likely to startle others
- anything reminiscent of fingernails on a blackboard....

My current one is a smooth jazz tune, but I once had the James Bond theme (previous phone).

What annoys me more about ringtones is the length of time they run.  I finally realized the reason for that when I mislaid my cell phone at my mother's house when I was cleaning it out.  My realtor had to call my cell for me to find it.

I also have a cat meowing, several songs that I've edited bits out of to use as ring tones, goats bleating (it sounds like an evil laugh), one that sounds like hamsters playing scrabble (I don't actually use it, just have it for giggles), a Mario games death sound, George Takei saying "Oh Myyyyyy", and the Transformers transforming noise. I have several people who have their own ringtones (for Mom and Dad, it's the Muppets doing Mahna Mahna), and I switch out the default ring every so often.

On DH's IPhone 4S, he had his ringtone set to David Lee Roth screaming.  He didn't bother to change the tone for me when I inherited it.  I had that thing in the hospital, where every time it went off, the nurse came in to see what was wrong with me.  I kept trying to change it without success, so I finally took it to the Genius Bar and they managed to get rid of it and change it to something more suitable, a barking dog.

I've heard ringtones in stores and on public transportation that are not only annoying but offensive.  Racist, sexist, laced with profanity.....rude?  Definitely.  >:(

I've never said anything; just keep moving (sometimes after giving the stink eye).
Someone I had met online and was visiting in RL  had a recording of her husband as her ringtone.  "Hey, (f-word)ing (female dog), get off your fat lazy (f-word)ing (donkey) and answer the (f-word)ing phone!"  She thought it was funny.  Yeah, that was an awkward visit.  ::)

One thing that no-one has yet mentioned, that drives me batty is this:

You phone someone, only to have (sounding right in your ear!) a loud and annoying rock song or other obnoxious noise in addition to the normal "ring ring" sound when it reaches their phone.  HATE this!!!  (And I like rock, but not in that bedamned context!)  Hanging up is not an option (work calls).  Seriously people, STOP IT!

I think those are called "ringbacks" so that the caller hears a specific ringtone when they call you.  I haven't encountered that but if the ringback tone was insulting, it would be one way to keep me from calling them!

My ringtone in general is the Ramones singing I Wanna Be Sedated. My tone for DH is Bon Jovi's It's My Life... and my text tone is GIR saying "do a little dance"....

But I am sure that I mute it at work because the last thing I need for my coworkers to hear is GIR... because GIR is a lot to explain to most people.

I had a job where we were allowed to hang up on someone if they swore at us.  I hung up on several "ringback" tones because they dropped several F-bombs and N-words.

I think the only valid ringtones to be complained about are those with offensive lyrics, such as curse words or insults.

I am skeptical about complaining even about those that sound like police sirens or fire alarms- even though they are startling.

Despite that I know why cell phones are made to ring for as long as they do I find almost all ringtones annoying.

However, that pales in comparison to a lot of cell phone behavior.

POD on that second sentence!  (FWIW, my ringtone is Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me," but I keep the phone on vibrate most of the time.)  The bad cell phone behavior I've witnessed on the bus is ALONE worthy of its own spin-off topic!

It's a hard line to draw, but I do think it's safe to say that if a lot of people are wincing or complaining about your ringtone then it is probably rude.

I have the Doctor Who theme(#10) for my ringtone, but for a while my boss' number was the Law & Order Theme.  I was at court one day when he called me and I'd forgotten to turn my phone to vibrate (SO EMBARRASSING).   Luckily everyone got a BIG laugh at the sudden addition of an appropriate soundtrack.

I was waiting for husband at the doctor's office, when the theme from "The Good,The Bad and the Ugly" blared through the waiting area.   Is it wrong to laugh, if it was a urologist's office?

I heard the "Colonel Bogey March" (from Bridge Over The River Kwai) the other day.  If I wanted to pay for ringtones and wasn't so inept with my phone, I'd get something other than the standard tone.

This comic (slightly crass language) explains my ring tone:  http://xkcd.com/479/ (http://xkcd.com/479/)

I agree!

But everyone around me has that, and it's hard to tell which is mine.

I find it annoying that my phone didn't come with several basic--but different--electronic "rings" or ring patterns. One goes "BEEP BEEP BEEP [pause] BEEP BEEP BEEP" and another goes "beepbeep [pause] beepbeep [pause]" and another one goes "BEEP beep [pause]" and a fourth one goes "beep beep BEEP" etc.

Mine came with a variety of musical ringtones.  I typically pick a jazz-oriented one.   If my cell rings in public I answer it right away so it doesn't annoy people around me.

I can't imagine telling anyone to change their ringtone, but for a friend or coworker I might ask them to turn the volume down or put it on vibrate if it keeps going and they aren't available/willing to answer it.

The best ringtone I heard was in a diner -- someone had the Old Spice whistle. Awesome.

The Old Spice Whistle is my text alert. It's nice to know someone else would appreciate it. I use it because it's catchy, I'm old enough to remember it and my Dad wore Old Spice.

Using a smartphone, you can also just use any recorded music as your ringtone. It doesn't have to be something actually designated as a "ring tone". That's why my "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" ring sounded identical to the actual music playing in my music mix that day.

Yes, although my music files are usually too big to use intact. But there are some very good, free music file editors out there, so I can just cut out a chunk of music I like and save that as a MP3 ringtone. Handy!

Everyone's ring tones are annoying except for mine.  But I can deal with it.   :)

Actually, I don't remember what my phone call or test ringtones are.  The cell phone was issued by my office, we're not allowed to download ringtones, and the choices with this partcular phone are boring.  The email ringtone is three peals on a bell, which is okay.  I prefered my old phone which had a Chinese gong for a email ringtone.

Back when I had a personal cell phone, I had the voice yelling "Pick up the phone, pick up the phone."  I get so few telephone calls that having  someone tell me what to do seemed like a good idea.   ;)

I can think of only handful of scenarios that would require anyone to have their phone's "ringer" on in a public place. Mine is on vibrate unless it's at home with me and thus it doesn't annoy people around me. I'm not a big fan of unnecessary noise - especially of the inane variety - so ringtones tend to really get on my nerves. I've only said something to someone once, though, and that was a co-worker who constantly left her phone on then went to three-hour meetings, leaving us to hear it ring and ring and ring. Loudly. We finally wrapped the stupid thing in her sweater and stuffed it in her desk drawer, then had a talk with her.

I've never understood the need to have unique ringtones for certain people, either. Surely the person's number and contact information show up on the phone when they call. So why the need for a special ringtone? That's always confused me.

The Imperial Death March, by composer John Williams.  It's a musical score nearly synonymous with evil.

It is my husband's ringtone on my phone. He is a Sith in cosplay.

It's just handy for knowing who's calling without having to look at the phone.   I know when I hear bagpipes, it's DH, and if I hear the Wicked Witch of the West theme, it's bff.

That and it's fun to personalize the phone and it is free with Zedge. :)  DH has Scottish heritage and loves Celtic music, and my best friend and I like to joke about being witches and tend to tease the boys by telling them she's a witch. Two years ago she playfully waved a hand at the beach saying "Wavus Maximus" when the middle child asked for bigger waves.   And to even her surprise, the waves did get bigger. :):)

I am so there, too!  I have a cell phone because I have to, and my phone's ring tone is a ringing phone.  (I have a pay as you go type.)  Middle son has a cell phone from the same pay as you go company, and he's actually set his ring tone for when I call him to that same ringing phone sound (apparently *no one* else uses that and they all have song and croaking frogs and chirping birds and whatnot, so the old fashioned phone ring *is* pretty unique).

My "general" ringtone is "Hello Goodbye".  DH is "Oh Darling".  Other friends and family members have songs that either they like or make me think of them.

I also use these tones as my alarm - for reminding me to take my pills (four times a day) I have "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and for general waking-up-ness I have "Day in the Life".  It means that whatever noise my phone makes, I know what I need to do.

Hi Floor!  Make me a sammich!

 ;D

It's funny other people on here know who GIR is - I forgot to add my dad's ringtone is GIR screaming like a banshee when Zim refuses to eat the waffles he made. It's usually how I feel when I talk to him  ::)

since it's a lot of screaming when the phone rings, I can totally see how that would be annoying to others. Why I mute my phone when I'm in public and set to vibrate.

I think for me the issue is more volume, rather than the ring tone itself.  And even then, the only time I might say something would be at work. Maybe.

But speaking of odd ringtones, our work landline phones - made by Cisco - have various ring tone options. Barely anyone changes theirs so I always know if it's my phone ringing when I'm in the break room or something. But the odd part - they have not one, but two, options of the ring tone being someone saying "Are you there? Are you there?". One in a male voice and one in a female voice.  I just find it so incredibly strange that someone would think those were great ideas for phones that are obviously business phones. Of course, it makes for a really good prank to change someone's ringer to that when they aren't around.  >:D

I had the joker ( http://www.zedge.net/r1273538?src=d ) as my text tone for a little bit & one co worker kept complaining about it so I did change it, and she started in about that one (http://www.zedge.net/r1447422?src=d ) so I told her she had her choice between the two.

So the thread has talked about annoying, but what about creepy?

The first one you linked, Chaney, is one that really freaked me out when I heard it.  As opposed to the second one, which I found hilarious but also an earworm.

I could see getting annoyed by the earworm aspect of the second one, but if I had to hear the first one on a constant basis?  I don't know if I could handle it.  (Yes, I freely admit I might be a wuss.)

I'm not trying to pick on you, Chaney, it's just that your example was the only one (so far) that gave me a visceral reaction that was neither annoyance nor amusement.

I'm just curious what people think about whether reasons beyond "annoying" make any difference as to whether we can ask people to change them?

Well to explain a little further, the co worker in question had ringtone from the movie poltergiest "mmmooooommmmmmyyyy" so i get the creepy aspect but but given hers i don't think (assumption i know) that was the issue.

Not a ringtone but back in college when the ICQ messenger was big, I had it and you could customize message tones.  For a while, whenever anyone would send me a message I'd hear this: http://www.zedge.net/ringtone/1184251/?cep=4

I've considered using it as a text alert tone. :)

LOL, nice!  I get that it's not the situation with her (she sounds like she just wanted to complain), but if I, for example, worked with you, and said, "I'm sorry, I know I'm a wuss, but your ringtone really freaks me out whenever I hear it.  Is there any way you could keep it on vibrate at work or change it?"

Would that be a legitimate request?  How would you (in general, not just you, Chaney) react?

Honestly, Giraffe, Yes.  If someone who hears my ringtones on a regular basis has an issue, I will probably change it.  Once.  I think you're right that the coworker in Chaney's case just wanted to complain.

I agree. If I'm hearing someone's ringtone enough to get seriously annoyed by it, the problem is usually the frequency at which I'm hearing their phone, not the ringtone itself. The worst is when others in my office leave their phones in their cubicles, ringers on, and leave the room. I usually go days or even weeks without receiving a call on my cell--the coworkers who leave their phones will get three or four phone calls ringing out just while they're out of the office. That's annoying regardless of the ringtone.

IMO, if someone complains about your ringtone after hearing it once, or once in a blue moon, before you promptly pick up the phone to either answer or silence it, then they're most likely being unreasonable. If a lot of people are complaining after hearing it once, you should probably think long and hard about whether there's something offensive or startling about it that you shouldn't subject others to. If the same people are hearing it almost every day or if you habitually let it ring out (either because you're ignoring the call or because you've left your phone unattended), then you should take complaints into account and adjust your phone habits and/or ringtone to lessen the annoyance to those around you. If you don't want to change your ringtone, then IMO the onus is on you to make sure they don't have to hear it--what they don't hear can't annoy them, right?

I love you, in a totally platonic and non-creepy way. :-P

I usually put my phone on vibrate out in public, because some of my ringtones (I change them fairly often) can startle passersby, being hard rock. (Think of Disturbed or Metallica just randomly blurting out of someone's pocket at the DMV or something....that could startle someone, LOL.) Right now my ringtone is "Don't Stop Believing" for everyone and "The Edge of Glory" for Mr. Bottlecaps. I don't think either of those would startle anyone, but it's just a habit. The only bad thing about putting it on vibrate is a lot of times I'll forget to turn the sound back on when I get out of public and then if I'm in another room, I won't realize my phone is going off!

But anyway, I think it would be rude of someone to blurt out that your ringtone is annoying if they don't know you well enough to say something like that. Family, friends are different (and even then I'd still be polite about it) - but random passersby, no, I wouldn't say to someone that their ringtone is annoying. I generally don't really think about others' ringtones unless it's a song/noise I recognize, and in that case I'd likely commend them for it, hehe, or if it's in a situation where it is considered rude to have your phone's sound on, for example, in a theater.

Yes, it would be a legitimate and reasonable request which I would most likely honor and just change it.

We had those same phones - with the same ring options - at my last job! One of the people in my general area on floor I worked on set her phone to the "Are you there?" option and it was so fabulously annoying that a bunch of us protested en masse and made her change it.

Thanks for all the great ideas...

my text notification is now the Old Spice Whistle and while I have several select ringtones assigned to specific callers, my new basic ringtone is The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

My alarm tone is Dixie (which some may find offensive but it is not intended to be)

I understand that Abraham Lincoln thought it was a good tune.

It has a good beat, especially at the beginning...

I have also heard it was one of Lincoln's favorites

It was the song Lincoln requested be played in Washington the day the war ended, since they had, in a paraphrase of his words, "won it back fairly." However, there are still people who, for good or for ill, will make certain assumptions about that song and the people who listen to it (which irritates me to no end, but there it is).

I would only comment if I liked someone's ringtone or if it were obviously funny. It's very rude to tell someone you don't like their ringtone if you're not close friends or friends who like to tease each other.

My ringtone is the Doctor Who theme(Eleven's), go figure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V8ZkHSOqH8 ;P It only gets annoying when I get texts, as I set it to a Dalek yelling "EXTERMINATE!" It's quite amusing in an embarrassing way if I forget to silence it and someone texts me in a quiet place! I've never had anyone accost me for it. Mostly I get chuckles.

I found with my new phone that I never realised it was MY phone ringing until Id missed the call, so I set it to the theme tune of my favourite game, Borderlands :D
Since Ive spent so many hours listening to it (and maybe having a sing and dance along) I notice it right away!
