Title: How often do you grocery (food) shop?
Post by: *new*mommyagain36 on May 06, 2013, 02:50:52 PM
I had a fun discussion over lunch today with several (female) co-workers.  I stop at the store pretty much every day.  There's a Super Sprawl Mart and a Traditional Grocery Store on the way home.  I keep running lists of what I need and stop at one or the other practically daily.  Co-Workers gave me the hairy eyeball  :o, like that was very excessive, and most of the other ladies stop no more than 2 times per week, 1 gal shops monthly at Super Huge Club Store and supplements by stopping 1-2 times a week for produce.  So, that got me wondering.  How many times in a week do you stop to buy groceries - specifically food items?  Just curious what's the norm out there...

I usually stop 1-2 times a week.  I might do a larger shopping trip every 10 days and supplement with small trips when I run out of produce or need something in particular for some recipe.

I shop once on the weekend, and usually once mid week for produce and stuff that's become extra popular unexpectedly (like when DP went on a walnut binge and finished off a whole can in two days!).

My mother goes once a week, at most. They are paid bimonthly, and only have funds one of the two checks for shopping for non-essentials, so that cuts down the trips. My grandmother has gone daily my entire life (and most of hers). She got married right out of HS and spent her first two married years in Germany with my grandfather in a tiny USAF base housing unit, with no refrigerator. To her, NOT shopping daily is crazy!

Once a week, or every 10 days sometimes. But, I live alone in a small apartment, and I don't have a car. My dad comes to see me several times a week and usually one of our errands is the grocery store. I feel like I buy a ton of stuff for just living alone, but apparently I either eat it all or throw it out, because my fridge is pretty bare if I haven't gone shopping for ten days.  ::) I wish I had more storage space so I could do bigger runs less frequently, I hate grocery shopping.

I used to go several times a week.  When DH's truck was totaled, we went to one car, and I have to plan my menus and trips more carefully.  I try to keep it at once a week now.  Our sons are both coming home over the summer, though, and one or both of their girlfriends will be visiting at different points, so I'm sure I'll be stepping it up!

Too often.  We probably do replacement shopping of things we routinely use weekly and other stuff in between maybe 2 or 3 times.

I was like the OP originally, stopping st the store at least every other day. Until I had a kid (and still a full-time job). Now it's just every Friday because I just don't have the time for more.

I make a meal plan for the week and shop once, on Saturday.

Before that I was stopping at the store for something nearly every single day after text message conversations with my husband. We would talk about dinner, decide on something, and then realize we didn't have everything we needed. That had to stop. It was driving me crazy.

I go almost every day after work; but since I work AT the grocery store, and in Northern Town everything is a 5-minute walk, it isn't really that excessive. Not to mention, given how fast our produce turns bad, pears I buy on Monday won't be fit to eat by Wednesday.

I shop every Saturday. It's rare for me to do any supplemental shopping. I might occasionally--a few times a year--do the shopping on Sunday instead.

Once a week, normally on a Friday.  I hate grocery shopping, I would shop online but then I run the risk of them not having what I need and then I'd have to go to the shop anyway.

1-2 times a week usually, sometimes an extra trip if out and about with hungry kids and I don't want to mess with fast food.

Once a week, but occasionally I'll stop in a second time for a vital forgotten ingredient or stuff for entertaining.

I keep it to a minimum because we spend a lot less that way, and there's less driving around. We can walk to one of our stores, but the rest are too far. I have different stores for different purposes. Costco is for things like vinegar, milk, and cheese. I go to Sprouts for their produce and meat specials and Winco for bulk items, yogurt and things like soy sauce. It sounds like a lot, but I think I average 1-2 trips a week.

Once a week (ideally anyway!). I shop online so will usually plan the week's meals and then put in my order, to be picked up on my way home from work. I usually end up stopping in to pick up an additional gallon of milk and/or some other necessity at least one additional time. I try to avoid weekends, but the store is only a mile from our house so it's easy to run in (although not so fun with two toddlers in tow).

I don't mind shopping, but I don't enjoy it, so stopping every day would be pretty miserable for me. The once/twice a week keeps my stress level and spending reasonable!  :D

Once a week, twice if another store has some good specials or I need something that won't wait until Saturday.  I also go to a farmers market once a week during the growing season.

I go to the grocery store usually once a week, unless I run out of half & half for my coffee. Every other week I get veggies delivered, as well. I stock up whenever I go to Costco or Trader Joe's since I do it so infrequently.

I usually do my big shopping on Sunday and then two or three more times during the week to get the stuff I didn't know I was going to need when I shopped on Sunday.  This is way too much, especially for someone who has come to loathe grocery shopping with an outsized passion.

What I aspire to is to do a huge shopping trip once a month and a weekly trip for dairy and produce.  Then,  I could steel myself for the big trip ( and reward myself afterwards) and the weekly trip would be easy.

I can dream.

I go every two weeks, although on the "off" week I may go pick up a couple of items if there are really good specials going on.

Once a week for a big shop at the supermarket and the fruit and veg markets. I might pop in during the week if I run out of something or decide I need something I don't have. DH likes to come so it's a family trip on Saturday with the toddler in tow  :-\

Because we have so many good places to shop, we will pick up juice one day, milk the next and a pound of coffee or some pickles from the Farmers' market on Sunday.  Since we walk to every place we shop, produce is usually bought on the way home.

We really enjoy having just about everything we need within an easy walking distance.

I probably go shopping most days. It may just be for bread and milk  and see what's on special at the supermarket . It gets me out of the house and gives me a bit of exercise (I walk there, a 15 minute walk each way)

Do so about once a week or week & half. I don't mind shopping that much, it can be fun and somewhat exercising. I enjoy browsing the deli sections for interesting items. Such as it was cool to find mascarpone cheese there when I'd only seen it on the tv food shows.

The thing I dislike the most is after returning home, having to get all the bags from the car. Sometimes I sit for a minute, wishing some sort of mechanical device would come out and retrieve everything, take it in the house and put it away. But it has yet to happen :o.

I work nights. I am off on Sun & Mon nights so from the time I leave work on Sun morning I don't return until Tues Night.
I do my shopping typically on Sun morning and then anything that is at a really good price/ad items, especially produce, meat I want to rotate out, I can get easily enough before the ad ends . I then do my cooking for the week on one of my 2 days off.

BUT, I work in a grocery store, so shopping for me is pretty convienent. I usually get the bulk of my stuff on Sun .We have other stores that I also shop at and as I tend to shop when I get off work as most other people do, I am doing mine at 3-4 in the morning.

This past week I shopped at competition store on Sat morning on the way home, for items my store doesn't carry and other items that were for sale at a lower price. Sun I bought my regular stuff at my store( workplace) also sale items and store brands, (yea! employee discount). And then today while I as out and about I went to Whole Foods, a store I love, but seldom go to because of the prices and it is somewhat a hassle to go as I have to specifically make time on a day off and can't get it done on the way home in the morning because it is not a 24 hr. store.

I overdid it to say the least, but I have everything I need to get me thru at least the next 2-3 weeks, and I have about $75 worth of some fabulous cheese!!! ;D

Groceries, once a week. I meal plan a week at a time and shop accordingly...even my kids know that now and are sure to get their requests in. It has hugely helped with their snacking habits. They know if they hork down all the "good" snacks at the beginning of the week they'll be stuck w/ apples, bananas & yogurt sticks toward the end ;)

I shop whenever I'm out of something, maybe three or four times a week. I tried planning it more, but I live alone almost next door to a decent grocery store and the things I eat don't seem to last well for a week (like bananas and the bread I like the best and without a microvawe freezing it required too much planning) and I have plenty of time so I wasn't motivated enough to do it just to avoid impulse buys. There are some things the nearest grocery store doesn't stock or there are better brands in other places and if I want those I have to plan a little more but they're still on my route. I also like grocery shopping so it's not something I want to avoid.

I feel you.  I find myself shopping more on DH's days off because he loves that part.  ("Oooh, cool, you got capers/prunes/kale!")

Daily, mostly for perishables.  I've found that if I shop weekly for perishables, way too much goes bad before we can eat it.

My son removes the bags and carries them upstairs to the kitchen! I still have to put things away if I ever want to see them again.  ;D

I shop on payday Mondays for all the meat and shelf-stable items I'll need for two weeks plus the perishables for that week. On the Mondays between I restock the dairy and produce for the 2nd week's snacks and meals.

I make a meal plan for Sun-Thur and do one big shop for that.

By Thursday we usually have a good idea of our weekend plans and if we'll be eating dinners at home and I'll go to the store to by for that if needed.

One of us might stop by a store for extra produce or pick up something that was forgotten.

I also have a few speciality stores that I shop at probably every 2 months to stock up on items that I can't get at a regular store. And we'll make a trip to Costco about once every 2 to 3 months.

Before I had kid's it was much more common for me to stop on the way home for dinner supplies 3 or 5 times per week.

Once a week, for the main meals and shelf staples.  We'll buy milk/bread/eggs whenever we run out (they don't fit the schedule very often), and I may need to pick up extra fruit/vegetables mid-week if things have run down too quickly or have gone past their best (although as a greengrocer's daughter I am not bound by the use-by dates that British supermarkets put on produce, and quite frequently eat fruit/veggies that is three weeks "past good" but only just properly ripe).

I would love to be able to shop only once a week.  I do a major shop once a week, but the swarm of locusts, I mean young  boys, that live in my house necessitate daily trips for milk, bread, fruits and fresh veggies.  I buy enough to fill the fridge to capacity, but it's almost always gone by lunch time the next day.

We use shelving in the garage for shelf stable items, but we have a very small refrigerator and a smaller freezer, so we can't buy many perishables at one time. We are going to buy a chest freezer soon.

We do a couple of "big shops" a month, and several small runs throughout.  My neighbors don't have a car, so there's usually one trip per week where I take the neighbors while the kids are at school.  I keep running lists on my cell phone of stuff that we get at each of our local stores (and the price we usually pay) so that I can see if I've found a deal.

Some things, though, I've thrown in the towel on.  Life has gotten a lot busier lately, and I no longer have the time to coupon and shop like I used to.  I don't buy toilet paper at the store anymore, that's on auto ship from Amazon.  I buy my Ulta shower smoothies when they go on sale buy 3 get 3 free and I've got a coupon- and then I don't worry about buying bodywash for 6 months or so.  Yeast, soy sauce, flour, sugar, canned tomatoes, razor blades, DH's cologne, shampoo, and laundry soap supplies get bought in 3 month to 1 year supplies when I see them at a sale price I like or we run low.

I shop irregularly and intermittently. The *intention* is to have it once a week, but I'm not that great at planning ahead so I'll often wind up there again to pick up something I forgot, or absolutely need for some specific purpose. I'm also doing all my own cooking with a dorm fridge. It's a large dorm fridge with a separately-doored freezer compartment, but definitely does not hold as much as the standard fridge!

To some extent, my shopping frequency actually depends on how much my depression is kicking in. If I'm depressed, I'll end up at the store more frequently because I'm acquiring things I don't have to cook, and I tend to acquire those in small quantities to try to encourage myself to cook.

Once a week, with an occasional stop in between. I don't have a car so I'm doing it by bus. That helps keep my trips down.

Because I don't drive, I do shop a bit more because I am getting too old to haul 9 tote bags of groceries home on the bus (but I still do!) .  I have 2 kids plus pets so my sister and I hit the Costco (love that place) about every 6 weeks and do a major stock up, and I do a Wally World stock up every 3 weeks and then get the perishable staples every week.  My dad always carped about how often I was at the store (we only went twice a month when you kids were here and it lasted) then my parents took older DD (11 at the time) with them to their place in the mountains for 6 days.  When he came back (with a twitch) he said he now understood the need for always shopping and did I ever have her tested for a tape worm  ;D ;D ;D ::)
