Title: Potato Chips!
Post by: veronaz on June 19, 2013, 05:58:18 PM
I love potato chips and really have to limit buying and eating them.  I almost never buy large bags......too tempting.  Instead I get a couple lunch size bags.

I’m picky, I like Ruffles or store brand wavy chips.

But I recently tried Lays Dill Pickle  - very yummy!  Not as strong as salt’n’vinegar.  They really taste like dill pickles!

mmmmmm-- dill pickle chips (mouth starting to water)!

I've heard of people going to extremes to get their hands on Ketchup flavored chips, which appear to have extremely limited availability here in the US. I've never tried them myself.

The only place I saw the Lays Dill Pickle was CVS, in small size bag.

Potato chips are my downfall and I can eat a family size bag all by my self.  I like plain chips best.  I don't like pickles but since it's been mentioned in all the post so far, I may have to buy a small bag of dill pickle chips.  Yeah, I'm that person advertisers love.

Ruffles with onion dip and coke to wash them down.

but my favorite chips of all are those made at Garbanzo, a fast food type place that specializes in Mediterranean food.  Man, I could eat them all day.

Dill pickle chips are good, but Kettle Brand baked Salt and Malt Vinegar chips are my favorites.

I bought some malt vinegar salt from Williams-Sonoma recently, so I'm hoping to be able to port that taste to other things, too.:)

I get the lunch-sized bags, too. A bag of potato chips is always one serving, no matter what the size. I like plain kettle chips. A nearby restaurant used to make them fresh. They were incredible. They got new management and changed to fries.

Can we stick to potato chips, please?

Doritos, Fritos, pretzels, crackers, etc. another place, another time.  THANKS.

wow. just wow.

Wow....meaning what?  Do you have something to contribute?  Did you want to talk about other snacks?  Maybe you can start a thread.  Meanwhile, some of us are enjoying discussing potato chips.

Best chips ever:  Rt. 11 Potato Chips

http://www.rt11.com/

Not available everywhere but they do ship.  The Dill Pickle Chips are great, and if you like hot stuff, my husband says the Mama Zuma's Revenge are just the thing.  If you are ever in the Shenandoah Valley, you can stop by the factory and watch them being made.

Actually, every flavor I have tried has been excellent (but I stay away from Mama Zuma).

Umm, some of those flavors sound wonderful! I like the salt and vinegar ones and I especially like the basil and tomato ones. I used to like the sour cream and onion ones but those seem kind of bland to me. If they upped the amount of the flavoring they would be great.

Funny how much I love potato chips but despise cake (and its relations, cupcakes, brownies, etc.).

Salt and vinegar, but not too vinegary. some of them are.

For basic, plain Utz. I remember, back in the 80's Food and Wine magazine, which my dad got, named Utz the best chips in the US. and at the time you could only get them in the general area of PA where they were made. thankfully, now they're available here in NJ!

I like trying other fancy flavors. Just bought some cheddar horseradish from Trader Joes. while they are a bit spicy, they are delicious! i ate a farily large bag in 2 days.

The best chips I ever had were the real Maui potato chips. There are numerous imitations but if you can get the real thing--only sold in Hawaii--they are deliciously salty and greasy. Perfect!

So much love for the dill pickle potato chips.  Hmmmm.... I've been avoiding these but now I might have to give them a try!

My BF loves Cape Cod Kettle Salt and Vinegar chips, he won't settle for any other brand of S&V chips and I must say they have grown on me.  I'm a bit of a traditionalist in that I love regular flavor UTZ chips, with onion dip made from sour cream and Lipton onion soup mix.  I prefer other snack chips over potato chips to eat, and usually only buy pc's if I'm craving onion dip, or, to put them on a sandwich.  (fresh roast beef with cheese and potato chips, and horseradish cream sauce. MMMMMM)

I had some tasty potato chips at a friend's house..think they were called salt & pepper and I don't know the brand.

I rarely dip my chips; almost never buy dip and never make it.

I love Herr's Ketchup Chips!! But alas, as you mentioned, they seem to be scarce. Once I find them in a store, I try to get as many bags as I can for there's a really good chance upon returning, they won't have them any longer.

Otherwise, I'm a BBQ potato chip fiend. Most any brand, but especially Lay's in the wavy variety. Zapp's Crawtators are also good.

Gonna be honest- I loved Twinkies. Although I was more partial to the cream-filled cupcakes Hostess made. Whenever I came home from school for break, my mom would ask if there was anything special she could get me from the store and I always asked for Hostess cupcakes. Mmmmmm... When it comes to potato chips, I'm not a huge fan of flavors. I like original and salt and vinegar and that's about it. I know, I know, I'm boring :)

But no more Pringles for me, and regular chips aren't as good w/ frosting somehow.

My favourite right now is a store brand kettle style chip - lime and black pepper.  They also make a sea salt and malt vinegar version that is almost as good as Miss Vickies.

I love salt and vinegar and dill pickle chips but I've found lately that the major manufacturers (Lays, I'm looking at you!) have cut way back on the flavour and aren't nearly as good as they used to be.

Doritos makes a dill pickle version; the name implies that they are heavily dill pickle flavoured.  So I thought I'd try them and I was very dissappointed.

I don't particularly like potato chips, preferring corn chips, but I will make an exception for Rt 11 Chesapeake Crab flavor or Dirty Potato Chips Sea Salt and Black Pepper if I'm eating a sandwich.

Never heard of it, but potato chips aren't that difficult to make.  The trickiest part is slicing the potatoes thin enough, so you need a good mandoline for slicing, and a deep fat fryer of some sort for frying.  Oh, and potatoes.   ;)

The thing is that the product is made for the microwave.  No oil so it's less fattening.  I'm trying to imagining a crunchy tasty chip from the microwave and wonder if their claims are true.  I should look up online reviews but I got lazy and distracted ::).

Sounds like it dries the potato slices as much as cooking them. If you like baked potato and tortilla chips, it would be okay, but a snack chip lover would be disappointed.

If you are in Canada and want a GOOD dill pickle chip, pick up Simply Food Sour Cream and Dill Pickle ripple chips from Shoppers Drug Mart, the sour cream really gives it a kick! Another canuck chiming in here - Old Dutch chips! *swoon* They're made in Manitoba (my province :)) and are my absolute favourite! They basic flavours: original, s&v, ketchup (I did NOT know that the US doesn't have ketchup chips!), BBQ, dill pickle... and then you get into the Dutch Crunch kettle chips! Onion & smoked gouda, jalapeno cheese, lime and black pepper....
*drooling*

Chips are my weakness. And if any non-Canadian members would like to try them, I will happily send a care package, since most flavours also come in small 70-gram bags!

Utz makes a plain chip with no salt added.  It's perfect with a dip or as an ingredient in a tuna casserole.

Also, it's not quite a potato chip but 'Baked in Brooklyn' makes pita chips that are so good you want to rub them in your hair.

Would...would anyone actually be interested in a potato chip exchange?  We have some flavours here (all the Old Dutch ones, ketchup, etc) that I'm pretty sure can't be gotten elsewhere and I'd be happy so send some to someone who wants some.

Utz makes a plain chip with no salt added.  It's perfect with a dip or as an ingredient in a tuna casserole.

Also, it's not quite a potato chip but 'Baked in Brooklyn' makes pita chips that are so good you want to rub them in your hair.

Utz also makes one of my favorites - Crab Chips, flavored with Old Bay seasoning!  I also lovelovelove the Voodoo limited edition Zapps!!!

Oh my word, those sound absolutely delicious!

The best crisps / chips ever, though, are Tayto brand Cheese & Onion flavour. They come from Northern Ireland, and are quite hard to find in England, but they are so gorgeous.

Another Canadian here.  I try to be good and stay away from the chips... but once a month (around the time Aunt Flo comes visiting) I really need a bag of Miss Vickie's Jalapeno chips.  That or the Metro store brand equivalent of jalapeno chips.. yum!

For the Aussies, you can try USA Foods in Melbourne, they've got a website and ship Australia-wide.  They do Pringles in a lot of flavours.  My favourite (and it always sells out fast) is Pringles Ranch.

Woolies sell Taytos in the "exotic" food section and you should be able to find them if you've got an English food shop in your area (Perth is full of them but I've moved to Canberra and I haven't found any yet).

New Zealand Blue Bird Green Onion chips are nice.  And one of the NZ brands does a bacon flavoured chip but I can't find it with a quick google.  In Australia Smith Crisps did have a special run of bacon flavoured chips but that was a while ago.

Cool Ranch Doritos

I'm not a huge Cool Ranch fan, but I love the Spicy Nacho and Spicy Sweet Chili.

Add me in.  I can't stand the Cool Ranch Doritos - but I loved the Spicy Nacho.

I've gone almost all the way gluten-free and have found some really good 7 seed Tortilla Chips.

I love the lime enhanced Tortilla chips!  Chipolte has great ones that are gluten free!  Tostitos has some really good multi-grain scoop Tortilla chips/scoops - but they have gluten, so I don't have those anymore.

Another type of Chip that's pretty good are the homemade roasted Kale chips!
