Title: Evil Christmas Town: Happy Update post #50 Page 4
Post by: ------ on December 01, 2013, 04:53:44 PM
My DH is one sick puppy.

He loves decorating for Christmas. Clark Griswold's got NOTHING on DH. He really goes overboard. Fortunately for the neighborhood, I'm unemployed and thus we are very tight financially and cannot afford to purchase additional decorations or replace those that wear out.

One thing DH loves to do is set up little Christmas villages on every available table top in our living room. I see about three separate villages - little churches, inns, bookstores, bakeries and houses. He even has snow-dusted "fir" trees that go with an old train set, and set up the villages on white tree skirts with sparkles to make it look like snowy villages.

Glowing inside the little clay buildings are light bulbs, and the golden light looks so charming and cozy on cold winter nights when it's freezing outside, as it is tonight (even though it's technically still autumn). Brrrr!

Several of the light bulbs have finally burned out this year. Unbeknownst to me, he replaced them with ones we have on hand.

I guess I haven't been paying attention, because I finally noticed the "new and improved" evil-looking Christmas village a few minutes ago when we turned on the lights as night fell. The adorable little church with its white "clapboard", steeple and bell tower and pretty little stained glass windows are glowing bright RED. So is the country inn, the bookstore and coffee shop, and the sweet little parsonage. They all are glowing EVIL RED. These red ones are the only ones (he claims!) he has on hand.

It looks like Stephen King decorated our living room villages. That sweet little church with its front door ajar looks like the gaping maw of hell.

I can't look at this anymore. It's too evil.

I don't care if we can't afford to eat dinner tomorrow, but I insist we are going out right now to purchase proper colorless lights. He sees nothing wrong with this. I say he's a sick puppy. It's kind of funny...in a spooky way...but this set up can NOT  be allowed to stay like this for the rest of the season.

He says I'm over-reacting. I say he's lucky I'm not getting the frying pan out.

Do you think I'm over-reacting? I don't think I would feel comfortable celebrating the Season surrounded by little villages that look like they came out of a horror novel. Should I do the unthinkable, and pull the plug on the village unless DH replaces the red bulbs with colorless ones?

I feel like I should get out some Holy water and a Bible and ask forgiveness. My goodness - the little inn looks like it's either on fire or a house of ill-repute. I can't have that in a Christmas village! I'm going to have to cover the eyes of the little orphans building the snowman.

My husband is sick! Sick!

He's in the corner of the room chuckling softly, softly....

Okay, I'd think this is funny, but you could probably figure that out from my signature.   :)

Having said that, if the Christmas From Hell bothers you, go ahead and pull the plug on that section.  Red light can have an "evil" effect; you can get a very spooky Halloween look just by putting a red spotlight or two outside.  It's not like you are screaming "Banish these ill-begotten hellspawn!" and tossing them in a bonfire, but just waiting until you or DH buy clear bulbs.

I think it's HILARIOUS, but if you can't live with it, you can't. Any chance he has some spare green bulbs and could alternate? Maybe the red and green together would seem more Christmas-y than the red on its own...

I think you need to borrow an "Elf on the Shelf" (http://i.imgur.com/B66ZD.jpg) and suspend it about a foot over his face while he's sleeping, so it's the first thing he sees when he wakes up in the morning.  And then ask him if he really thinks the red lights in the village are still a good idea.

That. Right there. Or would that be too evil?

Yes, please, please post pictures!

I used red lights in some indoor garlands a few years ago - just thinking some color would be a nice change from my usual default to white lights.  Looked like I had the gates of hell from front room into the kitchen area - and the red glow being visible from the outside led a friendly neighbor to call to verify that all was well.   I do now have a mix of white and red lights in the garland over the mantle - which I like - but red lights alone can have a surprising effect on Christmas decorations.

I guess this would be...the Parsonage? Although, now, it looks rather like...a house of ill-repute to me:

Or, haunted. I expect to see Carrie entering the house, having just arrived home from the Prom. Or something.

And here is what I now call Evil Abbey:

and this:

Here's the Church of Evil:

I had to use my cell phone to take these photos, so the color doesn't register as brilliantly on the phone as it does in person. In person, it's a little...scary.

Here's the former Bayside Inn, now known as Hotel Hell. It reminds me of  The Overlook Hotel, for some reason.

And here's the little grocery store, or bakery:

Strangely, I find this one the least disturbing for some reason. To me, it looks like they simply forgot to turn the oven off. I guess that's the look DH is going for...uh, warm and cozy, I guess.

REAL warm.

Rohanna, yes, I'm in North America. You are so kind to offer to send some colorless lights - but I doubt it would be worth the cost of shipping. DH will swing by the drugstore on the way home tomorrow and will find a couple of single bulbs inexpensively.

If he wants to live.  ;)

In any case, I thank you kindly for your gracious and kind offer. It made me feel better.

Meanwhile, I don't mind switching out a blue light that we have in one of the churches - it looks rather heavenly and quite appropriate, so I think I'll keep that. I might post a picture of that, too.

Green I don't mind too much. If I find a green light, I might use that one in the meantime. It will look a little freaky, like an alien invasion, but somehow I find that less disturbing than Christmas from Hell.

Although I have to admit I'm starting to get used to it. Somewhat.

But it needs to go. Tomorrow.

Reminds me of the time I came home from college for Christmas break.  I'll never forget pulling up to the house, all lit up for Christmas, with those electric candles in every window.  Candles with RED flames.  No other lights to soften the effect, so yeah, it looked like a demon house.  I didn't like it and I didn't even have to see it, can't imagine being faced with that all over the inside of my house!

Pretty much my reaction, too. The cats are still bewildered. They won't even go near the villages now, and usually at least one plays Godzilla in Christmas Town at any given moment. It's like they're slightly freaked out about it. I didn't even think they could see colors.

*Note to self*

1.  Find some inexpensive Christmas buildings

2.  Tone down exterior if necessary (black wash?)

3.  Add red light bulb

4.  Place with haunted house collection.

Bronners sells halloween towns next to their Christmas towns--Mr. Dawbs and I agreed we'd do that if we did a town...
I'm afraid it looses something when you can't see the whole display:

For the love of all things good and holy, please do not use green!!!  When I was a kid, there was a green house out the road from us and the people that lived there decorated their house with GREEN Christmas lights.  ALL GREEN. The place looked like a kryptonite mine.  The radioactive glow could be seen all the way to my house (and we did not live close by at all!) and it was just scary looking.  I still remember that horrible glow!!!

As for red...  Mom used to put candles with red bulbs in all our windows at Christmas.  This was also about the time The Amityville Horror came out.  I couldn't walk into a room that was lit solely with a red bulb in a Christmas candle.

I had a very traumatic childhood, apparently.

You kill me. I am choking on coffee, you had me laughing that hard. I think my husband warped me last night or something, because I find your story incredibly hilarious.

I was terrified of that church with the red glow last night...but then I had to spend some time with it with the lights off to take the pictures...and now I'm strangely used to it.

As for the green lights, I see your point. My husband decided to be EXTRA creative, and he put a green bulb in the entry way light outside the front door. The rear flood light next to the back door he changed to red. Our apartment backs up to the freeway. There's no privacy fence or anything....just trees. They are now bare, and the cars driving on the freeway can see our back yard. He made our house look like a....storefront in the red light district.

I hope the cars go too fast to see anything. He is completely besotted with his own creativity. I'm just....well, I can't really say. If this is his way of blowing off steam, well, I guess it could be worse.

But that darn Christmas village he designed looks like the neighborhood from Poltergeist.

Would yellow or orange bulbs make the village look like Thanksgiving?  Then you can pull out the village in October, use red bulbs, dead twigs for trees, etc.  November 1st, change out the red bulbs and stick some gourds and turkeys around.  Day after Thanksgiving brings "snow" and white bulbs.  Three months of use out of one village.   :)

Okay, first of all, when I went to open this topic to add my update, I will mention that the system said it has had 666 views. I am saying the Our Father as I write this.

Secondly, my desk and computer are in the front room where the Christmas tree and villages etc. are all set up. We have one large window facing the street and sidewalk.

It's dark out, overcast and a little rainy today. Since it's so dreary, I decided to turn the lights on early. I'm sitting at the computer working on a project, and I notice a jogger outside passing by. He stops. He turns and stares intently through our front window.

At first, I'm thinking he's appreciating our decorations, but he just stands there for a minute with this...look on his face. I can't really describe it. I'm starting to feel a little...uncomfortable. He's just standing there, staring. Not with a look of joy or wonder at my husband's lovely decorations...but he looks a little...scared.

He finally runs off. Quickly.

Later on, I decide to go outside to admire the pretty lights.

And then I notice something.

On the mantle over the fireplace, which is across the room and faces the big front window, my husband placed one of those electric candle sets with three "candles". They have bright orangey-red bulbs. Very pretty.

Only, when I go outside, I notice one of the three bulbs is burned out, leaving two. Which looks like a pair of demon eyes hovering somewhere behind the pretty Christmas tree. Here's what it looks like from outside:

I don't mind being freaked out by the Christmas decorations (too much) as I'm getting used to it - but I would hate for our neighbors to be traumatized. Goodness knows, I wouldn't want to be "demon-eyes-ed" in the neighborhood. (Get it?!)  ;D >:( :( :o

Don't worry. I have since removed the "candle" set until a replacement bulb is purchased.

One of my co-workers did Elf on a Shelf for her kids. I babysat one night. When they went to bed, I took the darn thing down from the fireplace and put it in a drawer. I told CW where it was when she came home. She agreed that it was creepy as all get-out, but they were doing it at school too, and her DS kept asking her if the elf followed him home for Christmas break. EEP!

Worry not small Christmas Town town's people, Mr. Kitty will save you from the demonic forces that are ravaging your tiny town!

Hooray for Mr. Kitty!!

Or would Mr. Kitty first be feared for his large size and then have to prove he was here to do good and help the tiny Christmas Town town's people?

Beautiful kitty!  I can't tell if he's a big boy or it just seems that way because of the size of the village! LOL!

You know though, with your writing style, Mr. Kitty, you really ought to write stories. You're hilarious! :)

I think I love that idea.

And Kenny can play the villain:

Slight off topic, but since we're talking about traumatic childhoods...

I'll never forget the time when my mother tidied my bedroom while I was in college. I had a stuffed bear that I adored, but it was always on the floor or on my bed because it was HUGE. Seriously, that bear could have been half my height, and I'm a tall girl. So my mother decided that the best place to keep it out of the way and off the floor was to hang it.

From the ceiling lamp.

With a rope.

Around its throat.

So I got back home and into my bedroom without any warning from my mother, and saw my adored bear hanged. Thanks Zeus I was over eighteen. I assure you that sight was SO not for children.

I think with a model Impala and miniatures of Sam and Dean Winchester the houses would have been perfect for a Supernatural christmas.

Oh, no! Black cats already have an undeserved reputation. How about the role of the innocent victim, chosen by the cult simply because he is black?

I was helping my parents set up their Christmas decorations last weekend. They have a set of beautiful little toy ornaments. That is, they are beautiful except for one unfortunate teddy bear. Between the wicked grin and the weird, dead eyes, that thing looks demoniac. This year, I decided to say something about "demon bear" and, yes, everyone immediately knew what ornament I was talking about, even without further descriptions. However, we decided it was not in the holiday spirit to banish it from the tree just because he looks evil. So, it went back and is hanging from the tree once again.

But if I catch it changing branches, I am burning it.

Oh no! Lady_Disdain, you're completely right! I forgot about the stigma black cats (MOST UNDESERVEDLY) have. I Kenny is such a sweet, gentle and loving kitty that it completely slipped my mind. Thank you for the reminder!

I agree - Kenny can play the role of an innocent victim of stereotyping.

My son made a gingerbread man ornament out of clay in school at one point. It only had one eye (not sure why!) and was a little creepy looking as a result, but I loved it. A couple of years ago he insisted we throw it away and it didn't seem right to argue so Creepy GingerDead Man is gone now.

I now need to obtain said miniatures, said Impala, and an evil Christmas town. I can write a fanfic AND have illustrations to go along with it.

I may or may not also need a miniature Castiel, for reasons.

You know...since Tini mentioned Supernatural, and Kenny has kind of a Dean look to him, I see a cocked eyebrow and smirk. (You gonna take a picture of me?) While Mr. Kitty is clearly a Sam. Lighter hair and that "I'll save my tiny Christmas Town!" look to him. I think Kenny and Mr. Kitty will team up (after Mr. Kitty rescues Kenny because people think he's evil but clearly he's not) and save evil Christmas Town together!

And in the end, we learn that the evil demon who cursed Christmas Town is . . .

mrkitty's DH!

That's what he gets for using red light bulbs in the first place.  :D

Did you just...write a one paragraph fanfiction, complete with illustrations, in which Sam and Dean get turned into CATS?!

...you may be my new hero.

SuperCATural - it would make an awesome comedy episode. I mean, having Dean-cat say something about wanting to haz cheezburgers after beating evil once more would be perfect, wouldn't it.

Well, they did do the Dean can talk to animals episode this season, and that was hilarious. I can see it working.
