Title: Who did a cover of WHAT song?!? s/o off Songs you hate
Post by: gingerzing on July 28, 2014, 01:56:19 PM
I suppose this could include really super song covers that were amazing.

Johnny Cash singing the Nine Inch Nails' song Hurt would be one that was amazing. It brought a richer painfully poignant edge to the song.  Made more so since it was one of the last songs he recorded.

Then you have this trainwreck.
I was reading an article about Celine Dion singing AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long.  Oh, my stars and garters! Besides in the video, I think that she is trying to do an air guitar thing like Pete Townshend (wrong band) and doesn't seem to even with the riffs.

So what remakes/covers of songs have really worked well?  Or what ones have made you tilt your head and go "huh?"

Mariah Carey singing Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak"  It's just awful.

And let's not forget some of the "remakes" of songs at my retail job. There's a very jazzy, upbeat, i don't know what you'd call it version of Depeche MOde's "Just Can't Get Enough" And then another "poppy" version of an AC/DC song.
I mean really? Terrible.

But the absolute worst, also from my retail job, was a version on our holiday soundtrack of My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music. First of all, I don't get why it shows up on holiday soundtracks. And this was a long, screechy, jazzy, 17 minute (yes we timed it) version. We all hated it and would laugh hysterically when it came on.

Hayley Westenra  "May It Be"
Smashing Pumpkins  "Landslide"
Annie Lennox "Take me to the River"
Depeche Mode "Route 66"
Alien Ant Farm "Smooth Criminal"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground"
Rufus Wainwright "Hallelujah"
10,000 Maniacs "Because the Night"
Fugees "Killing Me Softly"

Covers I hate.
Cher "It's in His Kiss"

Speaking of Cher music, has anyone else watched the Hotel Hell episode where the owner thinks she's an amazing singer? Her rendition of a Cher song is cringe-worthy!

Always thought "Brown Eyed Girl" was more Jimmy Buffet's style anyway.  Not that I don't like Van Morrison; never heard a cover of "Moondance" that was anywhere near as good as the original.

Here are a couple of interesting ones off my "Golden Throats" album:

Joel Gray singing "In a white room with black curtains in the station" (Don't know the song title.)  It's actually pretty decent.

Andy Griffith singing "House of the Rising Sun."  He sang this in his style with a rockin' harmonica playing along, and the words were somewhat different, but it's pretty good.

I think the really bad covers are when artists are performing things that are absolutely not their style.  It'd be like Bob Seger singing "Unchained Melody" or AC/DC doing "Whiter Shade of Pale" (as far as I know neither of these exist, although I like Bob Seger)

And then there are the worst of the bad covers:  William Shatner, who doesn't sing, and Leonard Nimoy, whose voice is flat.  Mae West's cover of "Twist and Shout" made Mr. Sirius literally fall out of his chair laughing.

William Shatner mangling "Rocket Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lul-Y8vSr0I)."

There's two introductions, then our guy starts at about the 1:00 mark.

"House of the Rising Sun" is a folk song, not an original by The Animals, so it's fair game for someone like Andy Griffith to do his own version. That's why the words are different.

The version of "House of the Rising Sun" done by Andy Griffith sounds exactly like a folk song.  I didn't know it was one originally.

Yep,  sort of like Chuck Berry's Maybellene is an adaption of the old folk song Ida Red.  Then there's Ram Jam's Black Betty that's been recorded goodness knows how many times before,  though I am partial to their version. Nivana's Where did you Sleep last night?

Of course their is Lead Belly that recorded House of the Rising Sun,  Black Betty, and Where did you Sleep Last Night among a ton of other songs that have been covered for years and years. I think a lot of you would be surprised if you looked up the songs he recorded in the 40s and the subsequent cover bands of those songs (granted,  many of the songs he recorded were still quite old when he sang them then).

I had the Golden Throats album (on cassette tape).  The first time I listened to it was on a road trip with my BFF.  We were laughing so hard that we had to pull off the road.

What finally sent us into out-of-control hysteria was William Shatner's rendition of Mr. Tambourine Man.

You can hear it here.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0hTtsqiFCc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0hTtsqiFCc)
I know it's painful, but listen to the end for the big finish.

My all-time favorite cover: The Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Chorus, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV6ETVQgob0
"R-E-S-P-E-C-T" is original to Otis Redding, not Aretha Franklin.  And he wasn't referring to being polite, either.
Big Mama Thornton recorded the original "Ball and Chain", later covered by Janis Joplin, and "Hound Dog", covered by Elvis.

And then:
I wish I were kidding when I say Celine Dion covered "You Shook Me All Night Long"
Madonna and "American Pie"
Korn, "Another Brick In The Wall"

All of Metallica's cover album "Garage Inc" were great tracks actually (IMO).

Duran Duran's cover album was... um... interesting. The cover of hiphop classic White Lines was a bit bizarre.

I just Googled to find out who sang this, but this was a great episode of Scrubs where someone called Joshua Radin sings a cover of the Sesame Street theme song. Amazing how a song that starts, "Sunny days, keeping the clouds away' can be the saddest thing ever.

Sirius....Joel Grey's line about the white room was from "White Room" by Cream, a 60's band.

Also, "House of the Rising Sun" is just about my favorite song! I have read many entries/books about the tune. It was first heard by a man recording folks songs in the early 1900's in the deep south. He was listening to a sixteen year old named Georgia do a bluesy rendition. It has been covered by Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan and others. It has about 50 different versions of verses!

Covers that should probably never have happened:
Celine Deon's version of "I Drove All Night" (!)
A1's version of "Take On Me" (!!)
Robbie Williams' version of "We Are The Champions" (!!!)

Covers that really shouldn't work but actually do:
DJ Sammy's dance versions of "Boys of Summer", "Calafornia Dreaming" and "Heaven"

Covers that might just be better than the original:
Roy Orbison's version of "I Drove All Night" (love Cyndi Lauper's version, though!)
The Atari's version of "Boys of Summer"

Korn's cover of Cameo's 80s hit "Word Up!". I love the original and I love the cover, but it was so out of left field for that combo of original song + cover artist.

Guns n Roses' cover of Paul McCartney's "Live and let die" was also a surprise, but it worked out really well.

Two I love: Tracey Ullman's version of "Move Over, Darlin'." I love Doris Day's version too, but Tracey Ullman's version has a bit of cheekiness to it that I really like.
and
Brian Ferry's cover of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". I find the Platters' version is just too slow.

One I absolutely hate: whoever it is who did a happy boppy version of "Love Hurts." I FAR prefer Roy Orbison's grieving version. Love should be hurting, cuss it all to tarnation, not bopping around wearing a Hawaian shirt and grinning!

I love a good cover. Some of these may seem somewhat obscure, but they're a few of my favorites:

Kathy McCarty's version of Daniel Johnston's beautiful song, "Living Life," which was in the movie "Before Sunrise." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6scamDr1r3s

Elliott Smith's version of George Harrison's "Give Me Love." I was lucky to see him perform it live a couple of times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0uKVQ-yVgw

Annie Lennox's version of the Clash's "Train in Vain." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvSdFr3niQM

My favorite-ever cover is Elliott Smith's version of the Beatles' "Because" from the American Beauty soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvSdFr3niQM

There are a lot of bad covers, so today I'm just going to focus on a few I like.  :)

I love the Carolina Chocolate Drops' cover of "Hit 'Em Up Style," which in the original is the sort of problematic break-up song that makes you go, "Why is this tune set to these words?" It gets the full revenge-driven angry person treatment in the cover.

Elliott Smith can cover many songs well.

I think people are surprised by how many Beatles songs were actually covers because they did such a decent job: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_covered_by_the_Beatles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_covered_by_the_Beatles). I'll admit that Ray Charles did "I've Got a Woman" better; Chuck Berry's "Rock & Roll Music" is better, too; there are others, e.g. "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," which is covered a lot. But many times it's either even or the Beatles did it better.

One of my favorite musicals, "Tommy," is funny because The Who recorded a whole album of their versions of their songs, which I love, but Elton John doing "Pinball Wizard" is so great; Tina Turner and Eric Clapton are fab, too, but they probably could've skipped Jack Nicholson singing.

WolfWay, Duran's cover of "White Lines" was blistering live. The covers album, however? Let us never speak of it again.  ;)

I have a deep fondness for covers, and actually have accepted the awesomeness that is The Shat into my heart. "Common People" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocket Man" are, look, just special, okay?!

Placebo's cover of "Running Up that Hill" is perfection.

To me though, that's the point of doing a cover. I really can't understand people who say "This doesn't sound anything like the original!" Isn't that the point, to put your own spin on it? Why just rehash the original, unless for a money spinner?

Someone mentioned Korn's version of Word Up - I like it, but it's pretty much a rehash of the version British rock band Gun did back in the 90s. One of my all time favourite covers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYzijRRRYxU

Oh my goodness I forgot about that.  She screeches the whole thing. It's awful.

I think it's funny when I hear the nowadays version of a song then hear the olden-days version later.  I'm like, "Oh hey, that's a cover?"  Like when I recently heard the original "Mony Mony" on the radio - didn't seem right to sing out the "extra" lyrics like in the Billy Idol version, lol.

I was at a Starbucks over Christmas and heard the most godawful version of Sweet Child O' Mine.  It was a slowed down, emo, hippy, dippy, trippy version.  It came complete with breathy vocals, tambourines, and crooning.  The only thing it didn't have was wind chimes and rainbows.

The song was so unrecognizable, that neither me or the cashier knew what the song was until she started in on the chorus and then we were both like  :o :o ??? :'( .

I think this must the new "trend" in music for retail. Many of our songs are like this, like i described above, and sometimes you're like " i know that song" but hearing it in a completely different way and context ,you just can't figure out what it is!

To me though, that's the point of doing a cover. I really can't understand people who say "This doesn't sound anything like the original!" Isn't that the point, to put your own spin on it? Why just rehash the original, unless for a money spinner?

Oh I agree, it's just that some come out better than others ya know.

I definitely agree about Placebo's "Running Up That Hill." I've heard a few other versions but that's my favourite. I also love Tori Amos doing The Cure's "Lovesong", but I like the original too. Speaking of "Lovesong", there's a really interesting version of that one done by A Perfect Circle; it's combined with Ozzy Osbourne's "Diary of A Madman". Very cool.

I am usually in favour of covers, and don't really understand the absolute distress some people feel about them; the original still exists, after all. Then again I also love things like redone fairy tales. I dislike covers that seem to 'blandify' them; I don't mind a different stye, but making it into elevator music seems rather pointless.

My favorite cover? Stewie Griffin doing Shatner Rocket Man.

Rob Zombie does a great cover of Blitzkrieg Bop; and also does a funky cover of Brick House.  I just heard Elton John singing Free Man in Paris by Joni Mitchell and as much as I love the original, his cover rocks.

Tainted Love seems to bring out the best in some singers.

I love the original Gloria Jones version, but Marc Almond, Max Raabe and Marilyn Manson have all done great covers.

Marc Almond and Jimmy Sommerville did an amazing version of "I Feel Love," too! And Adele's cover of The Cure's "Lovesong" was just WOW.

DJ Sammy's dance versions of "Boys of Summer", "Calafornia Dreaming" and "Heaven"

I was going to post the exact opposite of the bolded.  I dislike both of those covers.

Aerosmith's version of "Come Together" makes me cringe.  To quote DS2, "That's a *Beatles* song!"

Social Distortion does a really nice "Ring of Fire."

I so badly want to love that Social Distortion cover but it sounds like Elmer Fudd to me!  :P

My favorite cover is Rocket Man(tastic) by Maynard James Keenan (Tool/Puscifer) and Steven Drozd (the Flaming Lips). It is stunningly beautiful. There's no official video but you can youtube it for lots of fan vids.

Ah, yes. Hootie and the Blowfish did a cover of "I go blind" - which I hated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eeFHdL2FBM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eeFHdL2FBM)
I later discovered that it was not so much a cover as a re-recording or re-creation of the original by 54-40. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMZSSVt355I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMZSSVt355I)
The only thing Hootie et al didn't preserve was a single dissonant harmony. (In my mind, that's the only thing that is at all interesting about the song.)

WolfWay, Duran's cover of "White Lines" was blistering live. The covers album, however? Let us never speak of it again.  ;)
I'll see if I can find a video of a live performance. Thanks for the heads up.  :D

I have a deep fondness for covers, and actually have accepted the awesomeness that is The Shat into my heart. "Common People" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocket Man" are, look, just special, okay?!

Placebo's cover of "Running Up that Hill" is perfection.

No Doubt's cover of "It's My Life," however, is not.
Oh lord, no, bad bad wrongly badness. <shudder>

Speaking of fantastic cover versions: Richard Cheese does some glorious covers of rock/metal/alternative/rap songs in a the style of a lounge singer and its fantastic! He turns "Gin n Juice" into a slow rambling spoken word contemplative poem. He also turn Papa Roach's "Last Resort"  and Linkin Parks "One step closer" into chirpy little piano lounge singer pieces.

Why am I now remembering all the opera singers Johnny Carson had on The Tonight Show who would try to sing popular music.

One of the worst I ever saw was on the Miss America Pagent when Bert Parks still hosted.  He and several female cohosts were singing snippets of popular music when this happened:

"Someone's knockin' on the doh?  Somebody's ringin' the bell".

That's the only way I can describe Bert Parks singing Paul McCartney & Wings.

I used to be very anti-Beatles' covers, but have had to rethink that. The soundtrack for "I Am Sam" changed my mind. So did Aimee Mann and Michael Penn's cover of "Two of Us."

Thanks for posting this! I hadn't heard of the Choir of Hard Knocks before. I had to look them up to learn more about them. What an amazing group. I need to track down that documentary.

It reminds me of the choir Young@Heart here in the states -- a group of older adults that sings unusual cover songs. Their version of Coldplay's "Fix You" makes me cry every time I watch it. The lyrics are so poignant when they sing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-e8LGMPTtE

And then they sing "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones, "Schizophrenia" by Sonic Youth, and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," by the Clash. There's a great documentary about them.

I also have a copy of Golden Throats.  First time listening to it, I was stopped at a light, and Shatner was launching into Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.  I'm laughing, and it got real funny in the middle when the car crash happened: the loud bang, the sound of glass shattering, the woman screaming, "Holy Monkey Fritters!"  It was perfect: the recording acknowledging what a wreck it was.

Then I realized what had happened.  The guy stopped in the lane next to me had been rear end slammed by another car.  All those car accident noises were really happening. (PS: no one was seriously hurt, but the cars were fused into one)

What a commentary on the recording: these hideous noises seemed to be a part of this awful performance.

In the "Odd But Interesting" category, we have Lesley Gore singing "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and Devo covering "Ohio."  Lesley Gore isn't quite convincing as a hit woman for hire, but she makes it work better than you might think.  Devo's synth-heavy techno style of music gives "Ohio" a menacing edge.  I particularly like a bit at the end where they chant O-H-I-O, and the background vocals are the names of the four slain students.

A more successful techno-type cover is "In the Year 2525."  The mechancial music style suits the theme of a future dystopia.  I don't know the performers' name off-hand, though.

Guns and Roses did a great cover of "Sympathy for the Devil."  It takes talent to out-Devil Mick Jagger.   :)

Edited to add:  "In the Year 2525" as done by Visage

The Lawrence Welk Show presents One Toke Over the Line.

Lawrence Welk generally did a good job of keeping things G-rated and upbeat. He omitted all the references to war in Glen Campbell's "Galveston." The only lyrics he allowed were "Galveston, oh Galveston"; the rest was instrumental. But every now and then he'd be clueless. There's a song called "Frankfurter Sandwiches" that on the surface is about a girl who likes hot dogs and her boyfriend who buys them for her. That's how it was done on Lawrence Welk, complete with county fair setting. But it can also be interpreted as...something else.

In addition to the other mentions of celebrities who can't sing, I remember years ago hearing Telly Savalas talk-singing through Bread's "If." The lyrics are kind of bad anyway, and when they're spoken in a This Is Important voice, they're even worse.

While poking around in my iTunes file, I remembered a memorial cover album of Warren Zevon songs, "Enjoy Every Sandwich."  Adam Sandler, of all people, does a pretty good version of "Werewolves of London," but I particularly like Bruce Springstein's version of "My Ride's Here."  Warren Zevon wrote that song when he was dying of cancer.

I have two oddball ones I haven't seen in here yet:

16 Horsepower's cover of Nobody 'Cept You

Peter Tatgren's cover of Elanor Rigby

Both give me shivers.

10 years ago Rush released an album called "Feedback" - covers of the songs/artists who influenced them in the '60's. It was recorded with old-school amps and production techniques, and it's a lot of fun.

High points are covers of "Crossroads", "For What It's Worth", "Heart Full of Soul" and "The Seeker", which is absolutely glorious live.

A gem I'd forgotten about popped up on a playlist today: Missing Persons' cover of the Doors' "Hello, I Love You." Three words: Terry Effing Bozzio.
