Title: PSA: Are you trained in CPR and AED use?
Post by: CluelessBride on June 04, 2010, 11:48:51 PM
The blood donation thread inspired me to start this thread.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the US.  CPR and defibrillators can save lives by restarting the heart, but quick action is critical and so starting resuscitation attempts before emergency personel arrive can be helpful.

Are you trained in CPR and AED use?  How recent is your training?

AEDs are everywhere now, and they are fairly easy to use (some even make CPR easier). But you don't want the first time you ever see one to be in an emergency.

Courses are available through the Red Cross, the AHA, and many community groups.

Feel free to share your stories about training or about lives changed by first responders using CPR or defibrillators to inspire each other to  get trained and keep the training fresh.  We can make a difference!

I've had my First Aid/CPR training for year mostly due to working with children.  I've had to use it twice on my son when he was a baby and choking and I hope I never have to use it again.  I've let the certification laps, but I should be getting recertified in the fall.

I'm trained in both, but it's been over five years since my certification was current. (used to be a security guard and volunteered at the airport before 9/11)

I've been trained pretty much since I was a teenager (about 11 years or so) I just renewed a couple of months ago. I've never had to use it, thank goodness.

Same.  Security guard 3 years ago, but it lapsed 2 years ago.

I hope Southern Honey and I can both get certified before we have kids.  Actually, he might already be certified as part of his job, now that I think about it...

I need to redo my CPR certification. Last time I did, the trainer was amazed how much I remembered.

All campuses in my district had AED's and we are trained to use them.

Trained, certified and current in CPR/AED/first aid. Have been since age 16. (Also have miscellaneous training in things like bloodborne pathogens and various rescue scenarios.) DH is trained in all three as well, and DS has been since age 16.

My certification hasn't been current for a while, but I think I need to redo it. We had a heart attack at my office on Friday, and it really got me to thinking about it.

I actually used to be certified to teach First Aid, CPR and AED use, but I let me certifications lapse while I was overseas. Next time I have some money lying around, I'll get retested, but I am confident that I remember it well.

Yes, I am certified in CPR and AED, and I always keep my certification current. It's a requirement for my job.

Yay!  It's good to see people trained!   Not long after I got my CPR/AED training, my grandfather had a heart attack and his life was saved by an AED.  I wasn't there (not even the same state), but I was so thankful that someone WAS there who knew what to do.  And it feels good to know that should the situation arise, I am trained to be there for someone else's loved one (although I also hope I never need it).

There are some excellent grants and such that communities get to train more people.

Which is why I can fit it in my budget and am leaving here in 15 minutes to go get up to date on CPR.
(I've been certified and had it expire a LOT of times in my life)

(I need to re-do first-aid too but one at a time.
Since we're expecting, my parents are going with since they'll be sitting for baby-Dawbs some [Mr. Dawbs can't get off work--we're working on this].
We're all in agreement it's wonderful to have such stuff and hope to never have to use it!)

I need to get recertified- it's been a few years. I haven't needed to use it, other than the Heimlich on a choking friend (food went the wrong way, everyone else thought she was laughing. Two quick pulls and she was fine.)

I am a CPR instructor, so if anyone who needs to certify is in Eastern South Dakota or surrounding areas, let me know. I can get ya up to speed!

I'd take you up on that, but I'm in DC. Kinda long drive! ;D

My last training was just over a year ago.  Luckily, it's through the American Heart Association so the certification lasts three years.  My employer paid for it, so i'm not sure what I'm going to do when it expires.

In my career I have to stay currenty (teacher). I have used my first aid training when a man colapsed in the middle of the road and was just left there with cars driving around him. He was having seziurs, kept him safe and warm (mid winter) until the ambulance arrived. Also knew what to do to stop the bleeding from my daughter when we were in a serious car accident when her nose was broken.

Yep, I have to be for my work. Even though they keep changing their minds on *how* you should do CPR...

I'm trained and current. I'm a nursing student and they won't let you go to clinicals without it.

I'm a Red Cross volunteer- so I had to do the basic certificate, even though I'm in Refugee Services!

We were taught CPR, but I'm not sure what AED stands for!

Mr. Nutrax collapsed right in front of me from sudden cardiac arrest. (This was a different episode from the one I mentioned in the blood thread where his life was saved by donated blood). The first thing I did was call 911, as had been drummed into me in my emergency response class. I was still assessing whether or not Mr. Nutrax was breathing when the fire department arrived (the station is very close.) They had him under CPR for almost 20 minutes before they were able to get his heart started again, using a defibrillator.

That was three years ago. He's still very much alive, although recovery was a long haul, due to some brain damage.

I got the names of all the firefighters & paramedics who showed up and sent them an effusive thank you letter, that started out "you saved a life last Saturday..." That made their day--they rarely hear about the outcome of a medical call.

Certified and trained have been since I was 11.

It's now,a requirement if my job too.

I've never had to use the cpr outside of work thankfully.
Basic first aid has come in handy a few times though.

Frogmans trained and certified too, as he teaches martial arts.

The AEDs are really smart...they kinda wono't LET you screw things up.  You just follow the prompts.
(so, for peope who can't/don't/whatever get trained?  If there's an AED device when someone needs one, you don't NEED trianing--follow the pictogram in the container, follow the prompts (voice or phone or picture--they veary), and use it!  It won't screw things up.

DF and I were both CPR- and AED-certified until May or June of this year and haven't gotten recertified.  I actually got certified a 2nd time before the 1st certification lapsed because I learned that my first certification was not from an officially recognized organization for CPR certifications (that's what I get for trying to save money).  Can't remember what it was I needed to have the CPR-certification for (did it the first time just because I thought it was a good thing to know), but I went and got it done officially this time (with the Red Cross) and took DF with me (it was free at this one event they were doing in the next county).

I was going to get my advanced CPR certification through the local community college because I'd eventually like to become a healthcare professional but since I'm not near ready yet to start down that path, I, I'm afraid to say, am reluctant to take the basic CPR certification there because you're only allowed a maximum of three times (which is why I let it lapse; I was actually scheduled to get it done this past summer).

I just had to check up on my certification during a work audit. I'm still good through Nov 2011.

I learned through the Saint John Ambulance a month ago. It was a 2 day Senior First Aid course and I recommend it to everyone! I feel so much more confident now.

Trained in First Aid/CPR/AED.  Mainly for the job, but I think the skills are good to have for other reasons as well.  I even used my first aid this summer- splinted a kid's wrist in the woods with hair bands and a stick.  I don't ever want to do that again.  My motto is "I know first aid and CPR, but I don't like to have to use them."

I am almost done with the classes to become a CPR/AED/First Aid trainer.  I can only train the general community (not healthcare professionals), but I'm actually very excited to get started.  My office installed AED's in all our locations 2 years ago and my HR department decided that we should offer classes.  Since I'm the corporate trainer, I was one of the ones selected to become a certified trainer.  :)
