Title: What the heck?!? UPDATE, Post 27
Post by: Scritzy on August 11, 2010, 03:08:23 PM
Posting in this category because it seemed appropriate, but mods, feel free to move to Techno if it's better there.

I usually keep my FB status fairly lighthearted. Today it was, "Having peach ice cream for lunch. Off to get my head read." I had a couple of, "Yeah, it's fruit and dairy, how can you go wrong?" kind of posts, and I said, "I can justify anything that tastes good!"

A few minutes after the postings, I got a PM from someone I recently friended. I went to school with her and we weren't close, but she is in the school friends group, so I friended her. Imagine my shock to get the following from her:

I am probably out of line here, however, I take your posts seriously. I read them and a great deal of the time it is like hearing my sister, XXX. She and you shared the same attitude about food and drink... she died 01-04-08. My hope for you is that you will begin to look at your doctors care for what it is, care and concern and not comic relief. Again, I am sure I am out of place but you seem to have a lot of people who love you and care for you.... you would be sorely missed as my sister is.

??? What? ???

I'm thinking of replying, "Thank you for your concern. I'll be fine." Is that too abrupt?

No, that's a more than sufficiently polite response. What the heck? Nosy person is nosy.

Um, wow.

"I am probably out of line here." She's good with the understatement there, isn't she?

Your proposed response is fine. (Can you imagine what she'd make of some of my statuses if she takes everything 100% seriously?!)

Agree. And then defriend. This could only be the beginning.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.  >:D

Right now I have a quote from the song "Amos Moses." LOL!

My status updates are never, ever serious.  Well, almost never.  I make a lot of booze jokes in my status updates.  I have, at most, one beer a week.  I also talk about cheese a lot.  It's my favorite food group.  She'd have a field day with me.

I don't think you have to respond at all.  To someone this nosy and intrusive who is sure you have something wrong with you, "I'm fine," will just sound like you're being defensive.  Of course, you could send it and then block her.  But otherwise I think it's just inviting more commentary.

I would change "I'll be fine" to "I am fine"
No need to give the impression you may need help (from her... ::) )

That's just plain weird. I'd defriend her. Unless you want to wait for more off the wall comments for the sheer amusement value (which is what I'd be tempted to do).

What on earth? I can't see that a post about eating peach ice cream would indicate any kind of health problem. That's just weird! It's a good thing she isn't friended to me, she would see my post "Help! I'm addicted to playing My Tribe!" and completely panic.  ::)

I saw that and thought definitely!  I really dislike peaches - to put in icecream you do need your head read!  ;D

I think she's gonna have a lot of problems with Facebook, if she takes everyones status seriously.  ::)  The other day I think mine read something about killing people and getting away with it (cos I'm a forensic scientist!)  I wonder if she would report me to the cops.  :)

What?  That doesn't even make sense.  You make a few posts about enjoying food and therefore you need medical intervention?  Oh, that just ticks me off.  I would totally defriend this person.

I wonder if she's new to FB in general and doesn't realize that often times posts are just silly little messages, not a reflection in to a person's inner workings.  ::)

Huh. If I were way more on top of my life, I'd write a ten minute bestseller called "Feed, Fact and Fiction: What your FB Status Reveals About You".

Or maybe just a few Cosmo articles:

"What's your Facebook Season?: Color Coordinating your Wall and Wardrobe"

"Tag and Run: Tips on Sniping through Pics"

"Friend or Fake?: How well do you REALLY know your second grade buddy? Take this simple quiz and find out!"

"Is he REALLY into you? A look at his Wall tells All!"

As for this person's response, she sounds like someone who takes life Very Very Seriously. A joke can only mean you are denial about something, so she is willing to point you towards the light, so to speak.

I don't think there is any response you can give her that will change her mind.

I have decided that the best response is no response at all.

And now I shall have more peach ice cream.

Edited to add: And I go get my head read again tomorrow, this time by the therapist. Is it okay if I have more peach ice cream before I go?

Only if you do it with enough time in between to let the brain freeze wear off.

And I agree, the best response to the weird comment is no response. Anything you say, she'll twist around and say more weird stuff about. And if you defriend her over this, things could really get weird.

Just ignore it and see where she takes it from here, I would say. That might change how you deal with it in the future but for now, the best response is no response.

As I sit here eating peach ice cream (unfortunately, peppermint is season, unless I make it myself), I also ponder if her sister may have died of an eating disorder.

Still ... it's not her business if I eat peach ice cream for breakfast, lunch, dinner and every meal in between.

I will keep things as they are for now, but if she persists, off the friend list she goes. And on the block list she goes.

I'm guessing that her sister had some psychological problem, and also engaged in destructive behavior, including bad eating habits.  She she sees the comment about getting your head read, and connects it to her mentally ill sister, and then on top of that, you also have these self-destructive habits like eating ice cream for lunch ::)  Throw in the fact that you're joking about it, you're clearly very very sick, and not taking it seriously, and therefor, you're going to die like her poor sister.

I know she was way out of line, and way off the mark, too, but I do feel sorry for her.  Imagine how the loss of her sister must have impacted her, if she's reacting this way.

I would ignore it, and give her a small benefit of the doubt.  Perhaps her sister's death is particularly difficult to deal with right now, or something.  I think it's weird to send that without even a feeler message,\ about how you're doing.  Something to lead into that.  ???

My grandmother insisted that you should never drink  milk with fruit or eat fruit-flavored ice cream.  The reason?  "The fruit will cause the milk to curdle in your stomach and make you sick."  I guess from the acid content.  Nobody told her that the stomach produces its own acid, much stronger than the mild acid in fruit.  Maybe that was your friends' concern?

Or else she's on the "X is bad for you" kick, where X can be almost anything.

Yes, but what he died of is not clear.  Some sort of gastroenteritis, possibly cholera.  Maybe one or the other was contaminated, or some other food was.

I'm pretty sure it can't really cause problems.  That sounds like some bad science made up by someone who happened to eat the fruit/milk combo just before getting sick for other reasons.

Man, I want peach ice cream, all I have right now is orange sherbet!

She sounds like she might be related to my best friend, who is the Queen of Overthinking. When I first met her, she was so cautious about giving and receiving offense that conversations would sometimes run like this:

Me: Boy, I could sure go for some peach ice cream. I know I probably shouldn't though, I didn't have a good breakfast.
QoO: Well, maybe you're right, I mean breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and you wouldn't want to upset your stomach with ice cream. And besides, we can get food later, right?
....
QoO: You know, I just wanted to let you know, I was thinking about what I said, and I certainly didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't have ice cream. I wasn't trying to say anything about your weight, and I think you're very healthy and don't need to worry about anything like that. And I wasn't trying to suggest that we needed to eat now, we can eat whenever, I'm not picky.
....
QoO: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be nosy about your personal exercise and diet, that's your business, and I shouldn't be making comments about it.
.... (etc.)

Meanwhile I'm cracking up, because I haven't said Boo in the intervening moments. She's just trying to cover all the bases. She grew up with parents who are poor communicators. I forgive her. :) And she has gotten much better in therapy. I think she may even be stepping down as Queen of Overthinking - maybe your Facebook friend can replace her.

I haven't heard anything else from Nancy Butz ("I don't mean to pry, BUT ..."), so maybe my silence was deafening.

But I am not going to stop posting about eating ice cream. And "getting my head read" is my favorite phrase for going to my psych or therapist, so I won't stop using it, either. So we shall see ...

I can see a few situations in which your status might be concerning - if previous statuses were:

"BRB taking insulin now"

"It has been 4 months since my quadruple bypass surgery"

"If you puke ice cream after you eat it, it has no calories"

"My reinforced bed just arrived. 5th new bed in 1 year"

I'm half kidding, but you get my point. Unless you've already indicated you have a health issue that would make ice cream pretty bad for you, she has no cause for concern.

I think her PM had much more to do with her than with you.

Since she PMd you instead of commenting publicly, I think you could express your condolences for her sister and tell her that your health is no cause for concern.

She lost her sister and likely felt really helpless.  Now, she is casting you in the role and trying to help her sister all over again.  Not polite by any means but at least she did it privately.

And if she doesn't catch the hint, be blunt.  "I understand that you have suffered a great loss, but my health is really none of your concern."

Or just de-friend.

In the interim since my last post, she made a few more comments that were out of line. I defriended her.

Now I can have ice cream for breakfast tomorrow. ;D

Gee, I'd hate to see what she'd say about my future culinary student DS.  In the past year he's made the following flavors of ice cream:

Rose
Blood Orangese
Pomegranate
Chocolate Cayenne

He wants a waffle iron and more knives for Christmas

Your DS is a gem!.....3 out of 4 of those, I'm craving big time....the fourth, the Rose ice cream, what did it taste like? I imagine it was very pretty, but how would you describe the flavor?

The rose is my favorite.  He makes it every year for my birthday.  It's very fragrant and does take like roses smell.  If you've ever had anything made with rose water (sometimes Indian food uses it) that's the flavor.

Wasn't it President Zachary Taylor who supposedly died from eating cherries and drinking milk?  I know my father cautioned me about that as a child; I was never, never to combine the two.
It wasn't the combination that people think killed him.  He ate the milk and cherries after a long day of Fourth of July festivities.  It was the hottest Fourth of July on record and the milk had been sitting out all day.

But, as Elfmama pointed out, nobody really knows for sure what killed him.

Considering that "peaches and cream" is a traditional way to serve fruit, I doubt most people die from it.

The superstition here in Brazil is mangoes with milk.

Turns out eating both together slows down the digestion of the fiber in the mango, compared to not having the milk, so you can feel uncomfortably full. People mistook that for "dying of congestion", apparently, and the folk tale says never ever to mix those, or you'll drop dead.

Goodness, just dawned on me that most of the flavoured yogurt in the world must be deadly, because most of that is fruit flavouring. Often with emphasis that "this is REAL fruit, you know. Good for you, it is!"

My mother's cat delights in peach yogurt.
