Rude or practical?

We went to the beach yesterday.  I LOVE the beach, even in December...no I didn't go in the water!  (I'm in MAINE!).

Anyways, right there by the pier, someone had left their Christmas tree to be taken out by the tide.

Really, it IS biodegradable, but it WAS littering.

Maybe they could have taken it to a more unobtrusive place.

I don't know.

What do you think? :-\

Other:  Sad.

Call me crazy, but the sight of a discarded Christmas tree depresses me no matter where I see it.

We take ours out to the woods behind the house and let it biodegrade there :) 

I'm wondering who would take the time to drive/drag their tree to the beach!

Was it by the water or up by the dunes? In Surfside, Texas they use real Christmas trees for erosion control. The paragraph at the bottom explains this use.

Around here we haul our trees up to the lake and put them in the water for the fish...I'm not sure what it does for them, but it does something. Something to do with habitat. I don't really consider that littering...it's not covered in that icicle crap is it?

gives them all kids of places to hide.  We have a few spots around our lake where they do that as well.  But they better not have icicles on them.

It depends. some of the lakes around here have a place where you can drop off Christmas trees for them to use both in the lake for the fish and on the shore for erosion control.

Also at the trail heads you can drop off Christmas tree so they can shred them for the trails.

If they just dumped it there. Then they were being rude.

It would depend on the rules of the beach and that particular area.  It would be rude if such act was considered illegal dumping.  But as noted above - some beaches do have a program to reuse trees.

Our garbage does an extra pick up each week in January specifically for trees - they're mulched down and used at the local park.  Several parks in our area have a similar service where you bring your tree to them and they mulch it down.

It makes me very upset to see Christmas trees discarded on the road and in fields by people too lazy to drive an extra few blocks to have them properly disposed.

I live in Florida (and we don't swim in the ocean in the winter either...brrr), and it used to be the norm to take discarded Xmas trees to the beach to help stop erosion. It's now illegal, as it is an impediment to the sea turtle hatchlings as they make their way to the water from their nests a little later in the year.

Plastic icicles don't melt.  OLD plastic icicles used to be manufactured from lead - which is poisonous...............metal coated plastic isn't going to be good for any life forms that happen to ingest them whether poisonous or not..........

I can't imagine why you wouldn't have wanted to go swimming yesterday it was lovely out compared to today ;D I didn't know you were in Maine. I am almost right around the corner from the pier.
