I'm with you. This is really getting out of hand. I don't need to know, nor do I WANT to know everybody's religious background. It's immaterial. I don't need to know your sexuality or favorite charities or the fact that you think squirrels invented badminton. It started out as a helpful tool and now it's become some beacon of self-portrayal that just makes the location issue even MORE confusing than it was before. Because now I have to decide if those 5 flags represent nationality, location, just some country that you love, religion or sexuality and what order they all go in.
To be fair, though, many general (non-flag) signature images on this board (and indeed avatars) encompass that information too. I "don't need to know" how old someone's kids are, or how cute their pets are (by the same token, I'm sure people couldn't care less about my RWC teams either
), but I'm not bothered by posters having such images in their signatures.
I'm actually quite fond of the wee flags as signature images because they're tiny & tidier than large images.
If the stacking up of various flags is causing confusion (and I can certainly appreciate how it could), then perhaps one solution would be to request that one single flag for geographical location remains right-aligned in the poster's signature box, and any others left-aligned on the opposite side of the signature box. This would make it more straightforward for posters who simply wish to quickly check where another poster is located.
