What Holiday Food Taditions Do You NOT Like?
« on: October 10, 2011, 10:51:13 AM »

In my family, Holiday meals had to include creamed onions.  Nobody liked them, nobody ate them but they always had to be on the menu.

There was also the mince pie.  Pumpkin pie? Sure!  Cream pie?  Cut me a slice!  Fruit pie?  Do you need to ask?  Mince pie?  No thanks.  Still, the mince pie had to be there every Thanksgiving and Christmas.

There is the persistent legend about the mummified fruit cake that made the rounds in a family for at least a quarter century.

I don't know a single person of Scandanavian descent who really likes lutefisk.

Are there dishes in your traditionalHoliday menus that you really dislike?

Sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce(but I do like juice), pecan pie.

Coming from a different tradition, there are foods associated with Jewish backgrounds that I don't like, including matzo brie and felafel.

For Thanksgiving, maybe ham (because I do keep kosher and pork is not), but that's it.  I love the rest of the menu-turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, pumpkin or other pie.  Yum.  (My parents also serve this menu on Rosh Hashanah-as alternatives, they might serve pot roast or stuffed cabbage.  It's taken me some time to appreciate a good pot roast, but at this point in my life I enjoy it.)
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

Sweet potatoes (although I enjoy picking off the marshmallows on top  ;D).

As a kid, I hated saurkraut on New Year's Day. Now I like it.

Sweet potatoes with marshmallow--seriously, who thought that combo up?

Pie. Any pie. I'd rather have fruit cake.

Cranberry sauce.

Gravy with giblets. (Plain gravy is fine.)

Pumpkin pie.  Never liked it.  Never will.  However, in an ironic twist of fate, my 8 yo nephew and I have a tradition of making a pumpkin pie together every year.   ;D

Love, love, love creamed onions!  I believe I may be the only person in the world who does.....

Nope, you're not.  I love creamed onions, too.

Glazed whatever.  It's too sweet for me.  You can keep your glazed ham, glazed carrots, candied yams, and so forth.

Pecan pie looks like cockroach surprise.  Go ahead and have mine.  Please!  ;)

Green bean casserole.

Yeah. I don't even want to look at it.

Roasted parsnips, especially when they masquerade as a roast potato.

Candied yams

Bleh, bleh, bleh....I finally convinced my DM to drop them from the menu.

Now, if I could only get rid of the boiled to grey death green beans or the dreaded green bean casserole.  It is always one or the other and sometimes both ::).  I cannot convince any of them that they would be awesome steamed.

I forgot the cranberry jelly atrocity that Ocean Spray makes.  I like fresh cranberry sauce, but that stuff is vile.

Mince pies, christmas pudding and christmas cake -- blech! You can't go anywhere around here in the month before christmas without a mince pie being handed to you, and I loathe them. And the smell of christmas pudding (especially if it being heated in the microwave) is just vile.
