There's no excuse for this. Gee knew about his children's existence before the party started. There's absolutely no reason for him to have moved the party to his house. and if he did, he certainly shouldn't have asjked everybody to bring your goodies with them. Fie on them and no more parties with DH's coworkers. Not going was a wise move on your part.

Something very similar happened to me about three years ago, on NYE.  I haven't hosted a single party since.  Not one.

The guests that left I still see socially; the guests that instigated the mass exodus I rarely see and never invite them to anything.

The guests that stayed?  Well, it's 5AM on New Years' Day and I just said goodnight to them; they're all in the spare bedrooms downstairs.  :)

Hey, I never said my roommates didn't throw parties anymore...  ;)

Wait.  Your husband went, too?   ???

Yes. He came to me when he realized our party was walking out the door and asked what he should do.  I said, "Go and have a good time."   There is no reason for both of us to stay home and stare at each other while we tend to the fire in the fireplace and tidy up the kitchen.  I can do that, and since these are his co-workers, he can go to the party.   Yes, he will owe me, and I do expect a very nice birthday gift and perhaps dinner in 3 weeks!    But there was just no way both of us should suffer because our guests decided to go with plan B.
When they started leaving did they just start taking the food with them?  I don't know how many people were there but didn't even one call the others on it?  I also wonder if this was a party made up of men he works with and not mutual friends and their spouses.  I would have asked that they help me clean up their mess before they left and made them leave me some food.

I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

Holy...  yeah, that was incredibly rude.  Everyone bailing out was bad enough, but to take all the food with them?  That's just rubbing salt into an open wound.

Definintely do not EVER host anything where these folks are invited.

Okay, when hubby got home I got the scoop.... turns out Mrs. GEE had invited a bunch of HER friends to their  house and when they came she realized she wasn't ready for a party.....her house wasn't tidy, she didn't have enough food...  But the real motive was, if her husband came to our poker party she'd be stuck watching the 2 kids alone while trying to entertain her friends.   So HE called and hijacked my party.  We had 5 guys here (it was a poker party) plus Hubby and myself.  Somehow the 5 guys just couldn't play poker without Gee.   It did hurt my husband, which was why he was so stunned and went along with it.  He was so insulted he didn't know what to do. We have been hosting parties for years, and this is the first time this has happened.  I guess we've just been lucky for the past 20 years and our luck ran out.

No, these are not friends, but co-workers of Hubby's, and no, there will be no more parties at our house for them.

Thanks for giving us the head's up on what happened.  I was in shock and wanted to let you know that umm no - this is NOT how things are generally dont in Texas!  GEE"s wife sounds a bit bitter - if she had a problem with her husband going out and leaving her with the kids and HER friends - she should have told him in the first place

(oh and according to my hubby = poker is best played with 6 - so that's probably why all the guys wanted to keep the number.)

No, that's definitely not how things are done in Texas...and somebody ought to send out the etiquette posse for the party-poachin' wife.

I see how your husband was caught in the middle with co-workers, but I'm still aghast.

I would be a lot more hurt that my husband left our New Years Eve party than if his workmates did.  We just watched DVD's late last night, but I can't imagine my husband would consider leaving me alone on New Year's Eve in order to spare the feelings of his buddies.

Is this normal? I have never had one of my parties moved to someone else's house before.  I'm not angry, I'm not upset.... I'm just stunned.

The last time I heard about something like this was in college - when a group we were peripheral to got their party kicked out of an apartment complex early one weekend evening due to loud music.  The guys "hosting" the party remembered that DeHubby and I owned our own (small) house and came over to see if they could party at our house.  They brought some snacks (dip, chips, and sodas) as well as beer.

DeHubby let them in with a comment that the party would end at midnight...............and they took out the trash for me before leaving.

That happened - but that was the only time I remember a floating party landing on our doorstep.........

That was in Texas, almost thirty years ago, and the circumstances were not very similar.

I'd say that Gee taking the party away from you was INCREDIBLY rude - but it sounds like the rest of the guest list was part & parcel of the rudeness - as they could have stayed at your home with you and your hubby.  Hubby going along may just have been a desire to get the dishes back................

If there is a "next time" - I'd put the food up and suggest that the guests have fun with a sick baby and sick toddler BUT NO FOOD in the new location.  But Snarky VorFemme does tend to have a sharp word or two at the ready............

Edited to add that we've never had a poker party - as the only time I've played was the time I lost a strip poker game to DeHubby in college.  He lost track of the score, I think.................

The "floating party" was several guys, fewer gals, music, and "conversation" of the type that can happen while dancing................and as it was some twenty-nine years ago - I don't remember the details very well.

I have never had my FOOD picked up and taken away unless the guest was ASKED to take it out to the patio because my hands were already full.  But my kitchen counter to my patio was as far as the food went.............

I guess they thought it was okay to take the food  I had provided "To Go"!

But I will give Hubby a pass on this one.  After our "guests" and food, and chairs left, we stood there and looked at each other..... we were BOTH blindsided as GEE never talked to my husband (I found out today)  he had called 2 of our guests on their cell phones, and those 2 guests convinced everyone else to go with them to GEE's party.   After they left, I looked at Hubby and said, Go. No point in both of us staying."     Hubby really was shocked, and he wanted his FOOD..... the man loves my deviled eggs!   I only make them once every couple years.....  Okay, kind of kidding about the food part, but we had cooked all day and Hubby hadn't eaten.

Hubby and I were both so shocked we just stood there and watched our party leave.... neither one of us moved until the door closed.    It was a very surreal moment.

My jaw has dropped!  I can't believe that a woman who throws a party and discovers that she isn't ready responds by stealing another party.  From a woman she doesn't know.  I also can't believe that your guests left with the food.  Leaving is rude, but taking the food when someone else made it is beyond rude.  Next time there's a work get together they're going to wonder why you don't offer.  But I think that GEE's house should always be offered :)

I thought we had it bad last night.  We were invited to stay, turns out it was a mandate, and we brought the appetizer, entree, and dessert.  They made the sides and salad along with providing the alcohol.  But I felt like I was moving my whole kitchen!

What about both of you going?  I guess I'm having a hard time with him leaving you to play poker and eat deviled eggs on New Year's Eve while you're at home cleaning up.
