Baby Jinx...AGAIN
« on: December 06, 2006, 09:09:14 AM »
OK, so for those of you interested in the neverending saga of the one named Baby Jinx, here we go.  The Heffalump weighs almost 8 1/2 lbs at 5 1/2 months old...yeah, he is a BIG CAT.  Well, he was "fixed" a few weeks ago, unfortunatley, they had to go into his abdomen to get one of his "bits" because it had not fallen.  this incision became very infected, he getspills and medicated washes over the area 2 times a day (this is not an easy task) and had to be on medicine for 2 more weeks.  They had to take the staples out because he and the other cats were pulling at them, so his wound is now open to heal.

It is a squicky situation, so I will not go into furhter detail, but we are very concerned abou the infection going to his heart.  He is such a sweet baby, he follos Jellybean around like a puppy and is just adorable, we are tapped out from his medical bills...and now LIBERTY is sick.

Man, what we do for our cats!

Hugs!  I know how that goes, and have the scratches to prove it.  <g>

I've found I can often irrigate cat wounds easily if I sneak up on them while they're asleep, and the irrigation solution is at about 102oF, just a hair above cat body temp.  Strategically placed washcloths soak up the used solution.

In the future, you might want to ask the vet about using an antibiotic salve on surgical wounds, especially since you know you've got lickers/chewers.  One that my former vet in another state used for an anti-lick/anti-chew salve was a mixture of Bag Balm (the stuff in the green can meant for chapped cow udders) and metronidizole suspension, a wretched-tasting antibiotic approved for use on dogs and cats.   Recipe was scoop a small  amount (about a Tbsp) of Bag Balm into a small container.  Add metronidazole suspension dropwise, stirring it in thoroughly with  something like a toothpick, until the material goes from yellow to sort of milky -- my recollection is about 10 drops per Tbsp of Bag  Balm.   Apply twice a day with a q-tip or a clean finger.  My current vet hadn't heard of it, and thought I was mildly nuts when I  asked for some metronidazole after we replaced the drain in an abcess for the third time... now I notice he's using it for chewers.  Anyhow, might be worth asking about, as it's dirt cheap and I've never seen an infection with it, nor picked-out stitches.  If the cat will tolerate Vetwrap over it, it's a good idea... otherwise, just put down towels where he's likely to sleep.

Good luck to you all, including Liberty.  Hope they're all doing much better soon!

Hope the elephant gets off your wallet, soon, too... our vet bills have run about $1500 in six weeks, so I know how it goes...

He gets a betadine wash and an antiboitic ointment 2x a day, I will ask if we can mix nasty tasting stuff in the ointment, thanks for the advice!

Luckily the vet is not charging us for follow up visits because it is kind of his fault about the infection.  His vet tech did not tell him he was out of antiboitics and that the baby only was on them for 4 days and off for 4 before they got the new shipment, I heard him tell her that he would have given us injections for him to cover the lapse of time of a perscription to a pharmacy, that he MUST be told about this in the future (she was new).

My vet rocks!
