starting today, in California, it is illegal to drive with anyone in your car trunk.

Go let them out.

So I can't put my dh there when he drives me crazy in the car? Good thing we live in the midwest with no chance of going to California anytime soon!

So before this, it was perfectly legal to lock someone in the trunk?
Really!?

I've been living in the wrong places!

man,   I'll have to tell my friend that if she goes to California that she will have to let Elvis, Jimmy Hoffa and Bigfoot out of her trunk.  (Her trunk is packed full of stuff, most of the time)

Blue, I think for it to be legal, they would have to have gone in there willingly.  Like sneaking in people into the drive in movies...or over the border.

Something like that.

Will the CHP do routine stops for trunk inspection, like the cops do here for seatbelts?

"Will you open the trunk for us, please?"

"I swear, officer, I didn't mean to have someone in the trunk. I always drive with the trunk empty, but I just forgot to tell Skeeter to get out and come up here in the front seat. I swear! I swear! Please don't give me a ticket, officer. Please!"

That's still kind of twisted. I can just imagine the court case...

"But Judge, you can't give me a fine! He was perfectly willing! I pointed a gun at his head, and he said it was no problem at all to get in the trunk!
Oh, it's not legal anymore?? Oops. Sorry! My bad!"

("Joe. JOE! Go let 'em out! They have to ride in the back now!"
"'Cause I said so, that's why! I don't care if the blood will ruin your seats. I ain't getting another traffic ticket!")

Actually, being from CA, I can chime in here as to the purpose and intent of this law...

Right now, if you are a teenager, it is illegal to drive with other teenagers in the car until you have had your license for a year (this doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever, but I don't make the laws, so...*shrug*  ::) ). So, kids were apparently getting around it by riding their friends around in their car trunks. I don't know much about it - all of my cousins except 2 are age 20 or older (the last 2 are 4 and 2 - we range from age 36 to age 2 - quite a spread, no?). I suppose my brother might know a bit more about this (he's a cop in our hometown). I might ask him, just for fun.

More new CA laws going into effect today are detailed here, which drew me because the headline was just so incredibly surreal:

Enjoy our spate of new laws!
