Peanut Butter for beginners
« on: October 15, 2011, 07:00:30 AM »
I had never tasted peanut butter before, but I bought a jar last week. (obviously I am not from USA  ;) )

If it makes any difference it is SUN-PAT smooth.

I need ideas on what to eat it with (other than "a spoon", which I have actually tried and I quite liked it)...

With honey--on crackers or bread.
With brown sugar on bread.
With butter on bread.
With a banana.

Yes, toast the bread--that makes it even more yummy as the PB gets sort of soft and melty.

On toasted English muffins with honey, jam, butter, etc.

Nothing wrong with eating it with a spoon. :)

Add celery to the list.

It is good with fruit like sliced apples or bananas.  It is great on almost any kind of bread.  My son's favs are pb on toast or a toasted pb sandwich with cinnamon sugar.  It is good in candies and baked goods.  PB/chocolate brownies are awesome.

Make homemade reese peanut cups.

In a cupcake pan (mini works best), put cupcake liners in it.  Or butter well.  Set aside.

In a bowl, mix a cup of peanut butter with a sweetener to taste.  Honey, brown sugar etc.  Add 1/4 cup of crushed graham crackers OR a cookie biscuit.  Mix well.

Melt your favorite chocolate, nothing needed in it.  about 12-16 ounces depending on size of your cupcake wells.

Working quickly, add just enough of melted  chocolate to cover bottom of all the cupcake wells.  With a rounded spoon, add a ball of peanut butter mixture in center.  Push down a tad bit so it doesn't cover the bottom.  Pour chocolate over it till covered.  Let it harden as it cools.

Eat.

Is there a wrong way to eat peanut butter?!?!?!

The absolute classic American way to eat it is as "PB&J" which is a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich on white bread.  But feel free to use any kind of jelly or jam or preserves.  Another classic American twist is the Fluffernutter: a peanut butter and marshmallow spread (known as Fluff) sandwich.

Peanut butter makes an excellent base for savory sauces as well, served over noodles or with chicken.  Its often seen in Thai dishes.

Peanut butter is great, as mentioned, on apple slices, celery sticks, carrot sticks, crackers, toast, or chocolate, etc.

Peanut butter pie and peanut butter cookies are also popular desserts/treats.

Oh and there's the Elvis classic "fried peanut butter and banana sandwich"!

Basically you make a peanut butter & sliced banana sandwich, melt some butter in a hot skillet and then pan fry each side of the sandwich until golden brown.  Super yummy... although do be aware Elvis died young and riddled with heart disease - it ain't health food when fried!

I like peanut butter with hard red apple slices and celery.

For toasted or not sandwich variations: peanut butter and ______

My favorite is with bread and butter pickles ( I know it sounds gross, but I promise it is not)

Jelly (I don't really like it this way...it is okay with apple jelly though)

Marshmallow fluff

Nutella...this is a fantastic combo...better on toasted bread

Banana...also really good...agree, it is even better fried

I know a few people who eat pb and green olives.  Also, one guy I know only eats pb with mayo and American cheese.  I have never been brave enough to try either though.

You have your way.  I have my way.  As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.--Friedrich Nietzsche

I recommend the classic kids snack, "ants on a log". It's peanut butter spread into the dip in a celery stick with raisins stuck on top of the peanut butter. Yum!

Peanut butter and honey on bread.

Take a full stick of celery and spread a layer of peanut butter down the centre.

If you have nutella or a similar chocolate spread, peanut butter and nutella on toast.

One more bit of advice.  And please just trust me on this (I know some people will read this and say "well now I have to try it" - trust me, I already took one for the team on this, just avoid).  Do not, under any circumstances, eat peanut butter while drinking orange juice.  Orange marmalade and peanut butter on toast is delicious but orange juice and PB is just... oh man its just BAD.  It congeals into a funky, gross sweet thick goop that no person should ever have in their mouth.
