New Year's Dinners
« on: January 02, 2007, 12:36:20 AM »
Ever since we moved to Lancaster County, we've done the traditional PA Dutch New Year dinner of pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.  After over a dozen years, I've gotten it down pat - okay, I've gotten my crockpot down pat!

Does anyone else have a traditional dinner?

No traditional New Year's meal here. Today I put the following in the crockpot: hamburger browned with onion, salt, pepper, and chili powder; a whole bottle of Heinz chili sauce; one small can baked beans; on can diced tomatoes. I let it cook on low for a couple of hours, and I served it over rice. It was actually quite good.

Never anything traditional other than a dozen grapes at midnight for a dozen months of good luck, which we missed out on this year - my mom's worried about my grandma, and rightly so, as she was asleep and pretty out of it most of our visit today (and has been sicker than usual most of the week) - so she wasn't really in a party mood last night. She hasn't been in the holiday spirit at all this year, ANY holiday, and it just worries me. :'(

Today we had something approximating lunch/dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, just my mom and I. We took advantage of a gift card my uncle and aunt gave me and my mom (who, we suspect, need some proper guidance as to who/what constitutes a social unit - I'm already being given spinster status! Geez, I'm barely into my 30s!) for Christmas.

We had such a big meal, though, that we weren't in the mood for cheesecake. Which is a pity, as I really, really wanted a slice of Pineapple Upside-down Cheesecake (yum! My 2 favorite desserts in one!) but by the time I was done with my glass of Fat Tire and my "Navajo" fry-bread sandwich I was full to bursting. And didn't really want to pony up for a to-go slice.

On New Years Eve, we had another couple over for dinner. I made corned beef and cabbage in the crock pot and some garlic potatoes in the oven. For dessert we had cream puffs with ice cream and hot fudge. Delish.

We don't have a traditional dinner. Yesterday my son-in-law made chicken and dumplings...with banana bread (made with Splenda) for dessert.

ahhh, this may be a southern tradition? We have black eyed peas and colard greens on new years day. I LOATHE both of these things and this is the only day of the year you would ever get me to eat them.

Superstition says that the more greens you eat, the more dollars will come to you during the new year, and that eating black eyed peas brings good luck for the new year. Hence why I actually eat them on new years. But I don't eat as much as I probably should, hence the low balance in both my bank account and my level of luck, I guess :-p

Three of my favorite foods!  That sounds so good!  I hope you will post it in recipes.  We had take out from the grocery store deli (and it was nothing to write home about).
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.
