And now ... cell phones in the locker rooms!
« on: July 24, 2007, 05:12:36 PM »
After a swim at the Y today, I went to my locker to get my shampoo before I headed for the showers. There was a woman sitting at the vanity in front of the mirrors chatting away on her cell phone, apparently to her daughter (I couldn't help overhearing part of the conversation, as she was speaking loudly). She was blocking the area where the hair dryers are available and sitting on the only chair at the vanity. It would have been difficult for anyone who wanted to dry her hair or re-apply her makeup to get around the lady and see the mirror.

While I was showering, I wondered how much the other party could hear of the showers splashing, toilets flushing, kids screaming, etc. I also wondered that if I went over to use a hair dryer, would I be told, "Will you wait to dry your hair until I'm finished talking??" (Fortunately, she had shut down her phone before I went to use the dryers.)

Another lady was also using her phone, but texting — she had forgotten her lock's combination (everyone brings her own locks) and was asking her husband for help.

Why would anyone want to have a leisurely chat in a noisy locker room at the Y? I can see if it were an emergency (or a problem such as not remembering the combination — and I give kudos to the lady for texting rather than talking), but just calling up to say, "Hi! Well, I've just had my workout, and I'm here in the locker room. What's up with you?" ???

With the prevelance of camera phones, most locker rooms prohibit cell phones actually.  Not to mention almost no company will replace or repair a phone damaged by water, so I don't see why a person would want to use one.

But overall, I see no problem with a person using a phone in a place where speaking with a friend would be appropriate, so long as one isn't yelling etc.  Whats the difference if she's speaking to her daughter next to her, or her daughter over the phone?

As for her bing int eh way, you say "excuse me" and do your thing just as if she was sitting there for any other reason.

i can't get over how many people chat on phones in the dressing / locker area at our gym either!  there's actually a lounge area up front and lots of chair in the hall way - but they're back by the showers/driers/potties.  cast me into E-H#LL but i have no pity for them.  i got about my business of getting dressed and ready.

there is a sign as you enter the locker room that NO phones with picture/video capability are allowed to be used/turned on while in the locker area.

The same reason that people use them at the movies, restaurants, in the grocery store, gas station, etc. etc. Because they can and cell phones have become a necessity rather then an emergency tool that they were originally designed for.

Did you ask her to move?  I would certaintly let her know she was in the way.

That takes a special kind of cell phone dependence.  Though it isn't quite as bad as the people who talk on the phone in a stall in a busy public restroom with toilets flushing all around them.

I would ask the YMCA staff about it.  Cell phones must be turned off past a certain point in lobby at ours due to the camera/video phones.

Which Y do you go to? Hubby and I are starting a family membership at the Y right behind our house(okay, over a street and railroad tracks, but I can see the sign out my kitchen window)

We normally go to Eagan because they have a waterslide, but the membership I bought allows us to go to any Y in the metro.

I belong to CFF, and they have very strict rules about not using your cell phone in the locker rooms. They will actually come into the locker room and tell you to hang up if you're using your cell phone. I am glad, becuase cell phone conversations in a locker room are very noisy and disruptive to others around. Now, I have used my cell phone in the locker room occassionally for small things, such as placing a take-out order at a nearby restaurant so it will be ready by the time I drive over there from the health club. But I go into the dressing stalls and talk as quietly as I can so I won't disturb anyone, and so the CFF workers won't see and bust me, heh.

I would be *so* all over the management if cell phones were allowed in any locker room.  I'm not bothered by the chatting -- I can dress while you talk.  But, I really don't want pictures of me removing my chones to show up on the internet.

A waterslide?!  I'm trying to remember why it is that I belong to [BigNameGym whose Eagan location closed to make room for condos] again...   ;)

Considering there are women who bring their teen-age sons into the locker rooms, people who like to cavort and dance nekkid around the locker room, and so on, someone chatting on their phone doesn't bother me in the least.  Although if it's a camera/video phone, it should *definitely* be banned.

I'll have to check them out. Oldest was just introduced to waterslides this past weekend. I think ours(eastside) might, but I haven't been there yet. I love that there is childcare rolled into the household membership. 2hrs per visit!!!
