The Problem with His Parents
« on: July 24, 2007, 11:41:41 PM »
Had to try out the new folder.....yay!

BF's parents are lovely, wonderful people. I feel very welcomed into their family (Jeff and I have been together 2 1/2 years) and they have referred to me as their daughter before. We travel a bit together and such.

There's just one teensy problem.

When we travel and stay overnight in a hotel, we all share a suite-style room. This is fine and dandy for everyone. However, I almost always end up sleeping next to the air conditioner. I wouldn't mind, except they prefer to sleep at 62 degrees. I wake up in the morning about 75% of the time with head-cold-like symptoms, because for some reason, sleeping in the cold like that gives me a...well...cold.

I started bringing my own blankets, but I was still breathing in the cold air and still feeling stuffy and icky in the mornings. I wouldn't mind asking them to turn it up a little, except that they really cannot sleep unless it is cold in the room. They made it warmer in the room for me once, when I was well and truly ill, and they barely slept that night.

What to do???

Could you make sure you're not the one sleeping next to the air conditioner?

Uh...not really possible. It's just not.

His parents sleep in the beds, I'm always in a rollaway or a fold-out couch...the couches are ALWAYS next to the AC, and usualy near the AC is the only spot a rollaway would fit.

Honestly, OP, I don't even know what to tell you at this point!  :)  It sounds like you have exhausted most of the options you have.  Would it be possible to bring an inflatable mattress and sleep on the floor, or even a small electric heater?  These may be your only options this point in order to ensure an happy night for all!

* I feel your pain about this issue, BTW!  I am always cold and DH is always hot!

How about asking the hotel for an extra blanket or two? Most places are pretty accomodating.

Right, I've piled six inches of blankets on top of me, but it's breathing in the cold air that makes me sick.

I think it's time to start getting a separate room.

By the way, cold air doesn't give you colds. But it can make your throat feel awful when you wake up.

I can't sleep with the AC on either.  It makes me stuffy in the morning.  It doesn't give me a cold, but I think it's because the same air is circulated all the time that makes me stuffy.  It goes away after a few minutes, but it's still a horrid feeling.

OP - time for you and BF to get your own room.  Why on earth would you be sharing a room with them?  If it's that uncomfortable for you and you can't sleep, then just get your own room.  Problem solved.

I know the feeling you are talking about. It might not just be the AC but the allergins in the rollaway or the sofa + the fact that your body is tensing up because of the cold. Being able to sleep on a real bed, bringing your own pillow, even sheets might help.

I purchased a hostel sheet set that I've used in hotels (like a sleeping bag on top of the bedspread) and my own pillow. I don't get those cold symptoms like you describe then. I've gotten a few "is something wrong with the room" questions from managers. So I've had to explain that I'm allergic to their laundry soap.

Get your own room! I'd go bonkers with four adults in one room all the time.

OK, if that's not an option, just tell them that the cold is making you sick. Why doesn't one of them sleep on the cot?

I'll also second the suggestion about allergies. Beware the evil feather pillows that the more expensive hotels like to use - they're impossible for me to sleep on. However, if you ask housekeeping, they will gladly bring you up non-allergenic ones.

There's no reason why you have to be the one to be sick all the time. Seriously, it can't be that big a savings over the long run to share a room while ruining your health.

why do you share a room with them? even a suite? i would feel REALLY uncomfortable, no matter how much I liked these people. but no matter what - if this happens, then you need to speak up.

Just so you know- when i travel, i often get head colds, stuffy nose, etc. I don't know if it's just the hotel room, but it could contribute to it - dust, different flora, etc.

Would taking a Claritin before you went to sleep help?  I prefer to sleep with an AC on but it does sometimes make me stuffy.  Claritin or Advil Cold and Sinus before bed usually makes sure I wake up clear-headed.
