My BF and I have been together almost 3 years.  We are a few years from our 40's so of course people ask aaalllllllllllllllllll the time.  AAAAAAHHHHH!

This question drives me nuts.  People have multiple reasons for not getting married.  Also, from an etiquette point of view, aren't personal questions from strangers (or from anyone if unsolicited) incredibly rude?

I agree that asking such personal questions is rude.

That being said, has this guest been living under a rock for the past ten years?  If you call up a daytime show marketed to the SAHM set, in the era of reality tv where no privacy is sacred (they put anyone on tv, duh, first clue), then mention your boyfriend of x number of years when it is totally irrelevant, you are asking to be interrogated about it.

It is also possible this is a ploy to get sonny boy to propose now that his sweetie has been 'embarassed in front of the entire country.'  Or a plan to track the 'guest's' wedding plans when sonny boy is goaded off the fence.

When she IMd the host of a television show, there'd have to be an expectation that the conversation would be on the air. It's a bit like calling a radio call-in show and expecting privacy. I don't think it exactly unexpected that Ms. Ray would ask where the ring was, so I won't exactly call her behavior rude, since the person chose to contact her, should have known she'd probably ask about the love life, and certainly should have expected the chat to be aired.

It's a bit like walking into a stip bar and being outraged at the topless dancers.
