Did you ever notice that most aluminum foil / Saran Wrap / waxed paper rolls have little push-in tabs on the ends of the boxes?  If you push those tabs in, the roll stays in place and doesn't fall out of the box when you try to unroll some paper!

I'm embarrassed to say I never noticed this until someone on eHell mentioned it a while back  :P

Me either!  Thanks for that!

I did not know that.  Thank you for sharing that illumination on one who has used the things for decades, but just now went and looked, and said "Honey, did you know there are 'push tabs" on these things?"  He didn't either (we both cook), so you have a two-fer on the "how did I not know that" and double thanks!

I didn't either (and I doubt DH does as we have the roll-falling-out-of the box problem).  Thank you!

Even with the tabs pushed in, VorGuy pulls so hard and crookedly that it pops off one tab and then comes out of the box anyway.

We have one roll of "professional" plastic wrap that comes out of a curved slit in the top of the box - he's managed, somehow, to pull the plastic wrap out of the box on it, too.

It seems to be my destiny to wrap leftovers, as he snarls the plastic wrap, rips the waxed paper in odd shapes, or gets the foil to roll along the floor while trying to dispense it.

My plastic wrap and foil do not have push tabs :(
Well, then take a knife or scissors and cut some!  A big U would do just fine.

A V would be easier. (I vote for a paring knife to do this--I don't think you could do it w/ scissors--but if the box end is really thick, I'm not so sure it's a safe idea. Be careful.)

I just exchange the wrap into a box that does have the clips. The rolls all seem to be the same length and so far I haven't had any trouble reusing the box.

The rubbery thing works, but I don't have the grip. The Oxo opener grips well and gives me the leverage I need.

The warm water on the metal lid doesn't always work, I agree, and I ruined a knife trying to pop the seal, so I have used a special tool that uses the top of the lid for leverage, but that has bent the lid so I don't like that.

Yup. Sticking with the Oxo tool.

My sister found me one of these at a garage sale.

It works great on most jars (some are too big), and saves my poor old decrepit hands.

I've also used the 'use a spool to break the seal' trick, and I have a whole collection of those rubber jar opener things. They're usually freebies from fair booths, advertising some place or other.  I have a pile of them.
I've always been afraid to try turning the jar over and smacking it on the counter.  I'm very strong and afraid of smashing the jar.  (yeah, strong overall, with weak hands.  Go figure)

If it is a metal lid, I run hot water over it sometimes.

I use the Oxo opener for wine jugs, large OJ jugs as well as just about everything else now.

I just read the reviews and was shocked. I have had no trouble with it in 7 years.

I have one of these http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Jar-Opener/dp/B00004OCIV/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320239545&sr=8-2

and it works like a charm.

I have this kind - works great

Instead of paying for luggage tags, we buy a roll of unusual printed duct tape and put a small piece attached to itself on the strap of each of our bags. The current one is blue with bacon strips on it and says I love bacon on it.

I have plain black luggage - last trip I had strips of black & white zebra printed duct tape on all my luggage (all six sides), checked and carry on.  It made showing up after taking the time to grab lunch to pick up my luggage from the airline office easy - the guy saw the same tape on my laptop bag & pointed to my suitcases!

Then I rolled the suitcases out to the shuttle parking lot to board a van for a ninety minute drive to where DD could pick me up - and I could still ID my luggage at a glance!

Next time, I need to take more tape or buy it, after staying for two months, the duct tape didn't want to stay put on fabric...

I always put a strip of duct tape along the handles and the bottom of my suitcases. Makes them so much easier to ID and spot at a glance.

I use the wide elastic band that you get on a broccoli bunch.  Cheaper and easily replaceable.

Some work some don't....its a fun read
The worst time I've ever had trying to peel eggs was when I listened to the advice of adding baking soda to the water.   Never again.

Huhn.  Baking soda has worked great for me. I tried it with laid-that-day eggs from my hens, and it was like magic!

I don't know what was going on.  I was making deviled eggs.   I purposely used eggs that were a few weeks old.  Those dingdangity shells would not come off. I tried rolling them, but the shell didn't want to separate. I ended up losing a lot of egg in the process of trying to peel them.

I've recently come across a recipe for deviled egg salad. Perfect use for those.
