Get a life
« on: January 03, 2007, 12:44:59 AM »
I was at the concession stand at my local AMC Theaters, and while the nice guy behind the counter was getting my popcorn, I overheard a conflict on the register next to me.

The lady had ordered a Freezie. Or whatever they're called. She wanted White Cherry, but as the employee walked away to go get the freezie, the lady called, "No, I want blue raspberry!" The employee obviously didn't hear, as it was loud in there. The lady turns to her daugher and begins complaining.

LADY: I asked for raspberry. I bet she's gonna give me cherry.
Daughter: It's ok, Mom. It doesn't matter. She'll get you a new one.
LADY: It DOES matter! These employees need to pay attention!

The employee comes back with--you guessed it--cherry! The lady snaps, "I wanted RASPBERRY!" The employee sighs gently and goes to get a raspberry. Now, it was late evening on New Year's Day, and the poor girl looked really tired. I have a friend who works at that same theater, and they only make 3-something an hour "plus tips." Right, because there's always something that deserves tipping at the movie theater. Here, popcorn-sweeper-upper, let me tip you ten bucks because you are wandering around looking lost and sweeping up bits of popcorn that have already been ground into the threadbare carpet!

But I digress. My point in all that was, the people who work here are overworked and underpaid. But nothing excuses what this lady said--and very loudly too--"IF SHE'S SO UNHAPPY WORKING HERE SHE SHOULD GET OFF HER LAZY BUTT AND FIND A NEW JOB."

Well sheesh. All the poor girl did was sigh at this woman's rudeness. Oh, and not have supersonic hearing.

I would have said something to this lady, but it took a few minutes to peel my jaw up from the floor. It sounds like this lady is the one who's unhappy. And her poor, teenage daughter who looked so ashamed of her mother's rudeness!

My goodness, how rude!

At least the daughtter had the good graces to be embarassed & not emulate the mom's behavior.

Someone should tell her that both cherries and raspberries are predominantly red.  Better yet, someone should have told the movie theater--if both drinks had been red, do you really think the woman would ever have been able to tell the difference?  I'm ready to sigh, myself.

But that's just my point--if the movie theater had adhered to realistic slushie practices, their poor employee would have been spared this boor.  Who, undoubtedly, would have found something else to be nasty about.

Sheesh its frusterating enough when people complain about people needing to "get jobs" but now people are complaining that other people need to get better jobs???

And good grief... getting upset over a shushie? That's just sad.

I worked at the local theatre (concessions, box office, some scheduling/payroll work) when I was in college.  The hours were pretty good to fit my class schedule, but oh the people we had to deal with! There were many times I was feeling plenty surly by the end of the shift.  Why is is that so many people need to make themselves feel one-up by being nasty to someone they perceive to be in a subserviant position.  Guess it's good that they don't know the sneaky ways some rudely-treated concession stand attendants can find to extract a little revenge. :o

How come, no matter where you go, do they only have those two flavors?  This is the one with the polar bear on the machine, right?

Those are nasty, no matter which flavor you pick.

I guess you are what you eat.

Now that's a switch.  A polite teenager and an incredibly rude, self-entitled mother (who cannot be considered a "lady.")

In situations like this, I wish two wrongs did make a right (I know they don't, but I feel terrible for the concession girl and the daughter).
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

So... the poor girl is working on New Year's Day and she's lazy?

This is why I don't go out that often.  I can no longer trust myself not to hit, let alone speak civilly to dumb-butts.

"IF SHE'S SO UNHAPPY WORKING HERE SHE SHOULD GET OFF HER LAZY BUTT AND FIND A NEW JOB."

If nobody had to have customer-service jobs, nobody would.  Seriously, who would want to voluntarily take a low paying job in which they're going to be verbally abused for little to no reason?  Somebody has to do it.  It's not like you can go out and start working a six-figure job while you're still in high school.  You have to start small and work your way up.  I do like the blame-the-abuse-victim routine that lady showed off.  Very classic.   :-X

Yeah....holy structural functionalism, Batman.  If that lady can't *politely* ask for a blue raspberry slushie, she doesn't deserve one......and if she feels the need to abuse a young girl over it, she doesn't deserve to go out in public. Of course, the movie theatre *could* pre-emptively solve the whole slushie debacle by setting the slushie machine up as "self-serve," like at all the convenience stores around here, but then they'd probably run into problems with boorish people putting their mouths on the spouts, or over-filling their cups and spilling on the floor and making a sticky mess, or sneaking illegal free refills (not that ice and syrup is really that expensive, but still), and just genrally making pigs of themselves.  It's sad when the rest of the world has to adjust itself to the lowest common denominator of bottom-feeders, like the slushie lady.

That's funny, that's the first thing I thought too.  How sad for the poor teen, but at the same time, I'm glad she realizes the boorishness of her mother--hopefully her (the girl's) head will stay screwed on straight and she'll end up a respectable young lady despite her mom's rudeness.

Shame on the mother for acting so off color AND presenting a bad example to her daughter.

As it was New Year's Day, perhaps Mommy had a killer hangover for which the only cure was the appropriately colored Slushie? 8)

I'm certainly not trying to excuse her behavior, just provide a glimmer of hope that maybe she doesn't act like this all the time.

This is when you smile at the daughter, shake your head sympathetically, and say, "They're so difficult at that age, aren't they?"
