Some words sound like they would mean something pretty, but really don't. 

Pandomonium.  Sounds like something that would be part of a symphony.

My first thought was Durian fruit.  Sounds nice, but apparently smells awful.

I have always thought abattoir to have such a nice ring to it. It sounds like a place draped in gauze with soft lighting and music and slight smell of perfume in the air.

Vivisection also sounds so much more fun and exciting than the reality.

That's what the weather forecasters call the old rain/sleet/snow combo. It sounds like something yummy you'd get at Dairy Queen, but it isn't yummy at all!

(I prefer my friend's term for such weather: "precrapitation.")

I agree on abattoir. I always get confused when I read the word because I KNOW what it means, but its such a floaty pretty word.

My "not-so-pretty" word: "rosacia" Sounds like a perfume, but is the cause of a good friend's constant angst.

Went to school with a girl named Chlamydia.  Her mom couldn't read and overhear someone reading a pamphlet at the health department while waiting on her check up.  She thought it sounded nice and didn't know what it meant.

Friend really suffered through jr hr and high school.  She got a full ride to a university and had her name legally changed to Lydia as soon as she turned 18.

She is a county judge now.  Can you imagine a judge named Chlamydia?

There used to be a radio shock jock around here who referred to this local newscaster as "Lydia Chlamydia."

That's an actual name of Spanish origin.  My FIL threw it out there for ODD's name, either his mom or Aunt was named Candida.

I have known 2 women named Candida.  It really struck me as odd but, yes, both were Spanish so I guess that explains it, different culture, different rules.  Also, both went by the nickname "Candy" so....don't know.

I saw a lady named Keturia working at a store once.

Keturah is a Biblical Hebrew name (I think she was Abraham's second wife, IIRC).

Keturia is a medical condition involving too many ketones in your urine!!!


I have seen more than one girl named Alexia.

Alexa and Alexis are derivatives of Alexandra.

Alexia is a learning disability meaning "the inability to read, or learn how to read". Way worse, and far less common, than Dyslexia.
