Some words sound like they would mean something pretty, but really don't. Pandomonium. Sounds like something that would be part of a symphony.

Ooh, what a great thread idea I have always thought abattoir to have such a nice ring to it. It sounds like a place draped in gauze with soft lighting and music and slight smell of perfume in the air. Vivisection also sounds so much more fun and exciting than the reality.
Went to school with a girl named Chlamydia. Her mom couldn't read and overhear someone reading a pamphlet at the health department while waiting on her check up. She thought it sounded nice and didn't know what it meant... had her name legally changed to Lydia as soon as she turned 18.
Thinking of women with "disease" names, I once met a woman named Candida.
(I prefer my friend's term for such weather: "precrapitation.")
