Before the Miss America pageant there was an interesting Pre-show about the preparations and training for the contestants.  One segment concerned training for the Q&A.

That was when the brain hurt came.

'What are your views on euthanasia?'

'That's a vaccine, right?'
 

Against death?

Against life.

Good point.  No-one wants to come down with a nasty case of life.

t was the tone of her voice, it's not easy to describe but that made all the difference.

I get it.  I used to know a woman who was the mother of a friend of mine.  I ran into her after not having seen her since I was a kid, and she asked what I was up to.  I told her that I was attending university; her response was to wave her hand impatiently and say "Of course you are; everyone goes to university."  Um ... no, they don't.  Some people can't afford it, some people don't qualify, some people choose not to.

Then,  I added that I was working at a dinner theatre.  (This was a part-time job to bring in some tuition money.  I worked in the box office taking reservations.)  She said "Oh?  Doing what?  Cleaning bathrooms?"  What?!?  I'm not saying that being a cleaning lady is a terrible job that only the lowest of the low would take (I would NEVER say that), but her tone implied that that was all that I could aspire to in life.  I was extremely irked, and so was my mother when I told her.

It's clear you don't like this woman, but that sounds like a sympathetic "don't give up", even if she phrased it oddly.

It was the tone of her voice, it's not easy to describe but that made all the difference. It was almost like she was implying that I wouldn't be worthy of actually getting a job I would like. I haven't spoken in ages with her but it struck me as odd and a bit mean, not what I was expecting.
I'm sorry that she has had all that happened to her, I only hear bywords of what is up with her everyonce in a while and I do think that she's pretty brave with all the things life's handed her on a plate. And I understand that people in her situation can become somewhat bitter - it's just that she's barely an acquaintance of mine now, so I wasn't expecting the slighting.

Undiscovered Country was actually pretty good.  The movies that followed were, by and large, junk (except First Contact, which was merely "meh".)

Of course, the absolute worst of the series is the latest one by JJ Abrahms (these are the voyages of the starship Apple Store)
