No, that isn't typical. A service business that wants your money should provide you with good service from the start. Promising to call and then failing to follow through repeatedly is no way to get a customer.

Next time, you might rethink looking at a seafood restaurant, if that's what's fancy in your area. They'll likely have more experience in putting together an evening like this. Wineries and nicer ethnic restaurants, if you have any locally, may also be able to meet your needs. Also, if you have the space, you might be able to hire a caterer to come to your home. Or, rent a hall and hire a caterer.

I hope you're able to try again in the future.
