rude not to return items?

I once had this really toxic boyfriend, and it ended with a nasty breakup.  A couple of years later, he emailed me about getting back some of his stuff (some old books, a jacket, a sleeping bag).  He also owed me some money, but said nothing about repaying it.

I had no desire to have any contact whatsoever with him.  As far as I was concerned, the stuff and money were just breakup fallout.  So I never replied to his emails.

Was that rude?

If he had contacted you directly after the break up, then maybe.

I wouldn't have blamed you if you had responded and said, 'I'll return it when you pay me the $$$ you owe me.'
