You might want to carefully read reviews of the very cheapest motels... some of them are of, uh, less than savory character -- the sort of place where you don't sleep well, or rooms may be rented by the hour.  I ran into several of that ilk when I was doing field work as a graduate student.  Sort of "bring your own flea collar"....

The biggest difference I found was that the Motel 6 was not built as well in that the walls were very thin.  So it was a bit noisy - I could hear next door flushing the toilet.  But I wear earplugs to sleep when I'm travelling so it was no big deal.  The place was clean and tidy and just for one night.
