Can I lie to boss about being PG?

This. I told my boss before I told my parents. I wanted him to be aware that I will be out for a couple of months a few months down the road so that he could plan for it. I told him to please not share with anyone yet as we hadn't even told family and he honored that. I had to tell a few colleagues before the 12 week mark because my morning sickness made it impossible for me to be at work before 10am (thank deity for flextime) so wouldn't be able to make some meetings.

I see your point, but even if you'd waited till the 12 week mark - that would still be nearly 6 months notice of your future absence. Most bosses need to be accustomed to less notice - for example, someone needing elective surgery could also be off for two months after the surgery, and might get only a month or two notice before the surgery date.
I'm a believer in waiting till the 12-week mark before announcing to anybody. If a miscarriage does unfortunately occur, Boss only needs to know that you (generic) need a few days off for medical reasons and can provide a doctor's note.

I would never even consider telling an employer I was PG before 3-5 months. And I would advise anyone in my life who asked of the same thing. Its all well and good the laws are written to protect people but reality and laws don't always mesh and not all slights are pin-pointable. Announcing pregnancy is a "need to know" thing as far as I'm concerned, and its only the very rarest of jobs that need to know several months out.
