Suggest A Fabric Dye?

(1/2) > >>

MerryCat:
Can anyone suggest a good, reasonably priced, easy to find brand of fabric dye for wool and for nylon? Ideally I'd like one dye for both, but I'm not sure if there are any.

jpcher:
Maybe go to your local fabric store and ask them for advice.

RIT is my go-to brand for dying fabric but I've mostly dyed cotton. I've even used the RIT brand for batiking silks. Not sure about wool or nylon, though.

Sorry, not much help . . .

SadieBaby:
I have never dyed fabric myself, but I participate in a lot of sewing, quilting, and crafting boards.  When people need dye, they usually get them from Dharma Trading Company.  They have specific dyes for almost every kind of fabric.  I don't know how pricey they are, but they have a website.  Maybe you could start there to get an idea what you need.  Good luck!

Sterling:
Joann's has a good selection of dye.  Read the packaging for the fabric type.  You generally can't use the same dye on nature fibers as synthetic fibers so you will probably need two different dyes.

For the wool, I'd suggest Dylon hand dye if available in your area. http://www.dylon.co.uk/product.php?alias=fabric-dye-for-hand-use

I've just used it on a silk jacket and got a lovely result, and it says you can use it for wool too. The machine dye is not recommended for delicate fabrics such as silk or wool.

I don't know what would work on Nylon though.

If your fabric is mixed fibres, you will not get an even result as one fibre may take the dye better than another.

Whatever you use, do make sure that you follow the instructions to the letter, and if you have any queries, call the advice line before you start dyeing. Do make sure you weigh your item before you start and buy enough dye (my jacket needed two packets as it weighed 500g, and each pack was enough for 250g)

There are some good dye tutorials on this site: http://www.newdressaday.com/videos/  the link will take you to the videos, scroll down for the dye tutorial.

ETA- Oooh I forgot! remember that if your item is already coloured, this also has to be taken into account- so if you dye a blue item with red dye, it will come out purple.
