The best meal you ever had . . .

camlan:
In a small Italian restaurant in Boston's North End. It was on the second floor of the building. I had pasta with broccoli in the most wonderful garlic sauce. My friends and I had stumbled across the place one day. Never could find it again.

In a campground in the White Mountains. Staggered out of the mountains in the late evening, having been delayed by having to help a college hiking club that had not come prepared for the weather conditions or the terrain. We'd spent three days on the trail. Dinner was boxed mac & cheese, crackers & cheese & pepperoni, and stale brownies. Tasted like nectar.

Outdoor Girl:
I was on a canoe trip.  We were depending on fish to supplement our food supplies.  We were mostly fishing for lake trout but someone in the group had caught a rather large brook trout, which is nicer flavour.  There was a package of egg noodles and a package of cheese that had partially melted and separated because of the summer heat.  We boiled up the noodles and mixed in the cheese; the fish was done in a cast iron frying pan (glad that wasn't in MY pack!), fried in butter.  It was fantastic!

I've tried to recreate the noodles; they've never been the same.  And before that canoe trip, the only fish I'd ever eaten was fish sticks or battered fish and chips.

QueenofAllThings:
Oh, so many! And all while traveling - on a small boat sailing around the Cyclades; paninis in Florence on a chilly Spring day; honeymoon  in Paris; truffled biscuits in Georgia.

siamesecat2965:
not at all gourmet, but my dad's homemade pea soup and grilled cheese.  I have yet to be able to replicate his soup, although I have mastered the grilled cheese.  He would use a cast iron skillet, lots of butter, and cook it low and slow so it was crispy, buttery and melty.  I miss having him make it for me.

Gourmet:  There's a restaurant near my mom in VA called Dudley's Farmhouse Grill.  I had ostrich with these awesome crunchy crispy roasted potatoes.  Started off with fried oysters, and finished with chocolate cheesecake.  I had no idea ostrich was a red meat, but it was fabulous!

Bijou:
Probably the Ratatouille in a place in San Francisco in the 70's, called Shandygaff located in the Castro area, I think.  I loved the decor and the wonderful background music...sort of classical, very low and it was romantic, to me, having not been married long. What I just read online is that the woman who wrote The Moosewood Cookbook worked there as a cook.  I love to think it was her food I was eating.
