Bluetooth madness!
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:03:50 PM »
My mom and I were having a discussion about these a couple of days ago, and now it seems like everyone I see has a Bluetooth. When my mom told me that she was now the proud owner of one, I warned that she was now one of the people in public who everyone would think was crazy, as they appeared to be having a conversation with themselves. We had a good laugh and discussion over that. I don't care how convenient and great these devices are, I just think that people look really kooky using them because of that. Not only that, but you can think someone is talking to you directly and you answer them, only to find out that they're using their Bluetooth! Now I don't know if I'm being directly talked to, or if said person is talking to someone on their phone. Also, I guess I have seen too many episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, because I keep thinking the devices look like a part of the Borg or Bajorans. Despite how great Bluetooth may be, I won't wear them because I don't want to look like I'm a crazy person talking to myself, nor do I want to look like a ST:TNG character.  ;D

I'd feel like a mental patient if I were walking around with one on.  I guess I still can use one hand to hold a phone.  That might change when I'm hauling around an infant.  We'll see.

Of course, if your mom decides that she doesn't need her earpiece anymore, you can make this handy dandy banana phone out of it:  http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/08/diy_banana_phone.html

At least it'll make you look less insane than the earpiece would.

Well, then y'all need to invest in one of these!

Anyone a Scrubs fan? There's a great episode in the 5th season where Dr. Cox goes on a rant about Bluetooth headsets and Kim (JD's new girlfriend) doesn't say anything. After he's done and storms off, she lifts up her hair to reveal a headset and says, "No, I can hear you, Mom! I just couldn't respond!"

My husband has one, but he only uses it in the car.

My mom swears that she'll only use hers indoors at her house. My aunt uses one while she walks her dogs in the morning. That's okay, because people probably assume that she is just talking to her dogs.

I have one & i looooove it. I hate holding a tiny little cell phone to my ear & having a house line got to be too much of a hassle so when i finally gave in & got a cell, G got me a bluetooth to go with it. Usually i use it at home, which is great - i can spend an hour on the phone with my friend in MI & clean the kitchen at the same time. I did use it while walking the mile to the store last weekend though & you know what? When i passed a bunch of kids they looked at me like i was a kook  :P
I have a friend that drives me crazy with his - he NeVeR takes the darn thing off, even if he is not going to answer any calls he gets. I know there are some fellow RPG'ers here ... imagine your GM in a D&D type game (yeah, i'm a big geek, what of it? ;) ) havnig a bluetooth on at all times. Maybe it's just me, but it bugged the bajeesus out of me.

:)  O.k  I am one of those.  I love my bluetooth.  I can do all sorts of things while talking on the phone.  I like to take walks on my lunch breaks and I do see some stares because I wear my hair down and people can't see it.  My 4 yo nephew loves to call his Gramma with it and walk around the house talking to her.

I love my bluetooth.  I was bluetooth before bluetooth was cool (I'm on my 3rd unit ;))

I have learned that discussions that lead into roleplay areas, though?  NOT in public places.  Ever again.

Has anyone seen those "Need to get away?" ads for Southwest Airlines?   Two mid manager types are sitting in a conference room and the man seems to be hitting on the woman sitting next to him.  She says something like "I've always found you attractive too."  He says "Hold on a minute, babe" to the woman he's talking to on his head set.

OOPS.

Bwaa haa haaa! I can just imagine a non-gamer seeing someone seemingly talking to themselves about the magical armor they had just found. That's pretty funny.

Worse, I play in a pretty dark Star Wars themed universe - it's very gritty.  I, uh, really thought there was no one around when I started discussing obtaining information from a very stubborn character and how our characters were going to go about doing it.

I just thank God she didn't call the cops on me, thinking I was doing this for real!

Yes! You beat me to it. I was going to mention that commercial. That is exactly what I'm talking about with those earpiece thingies.
