I have a bit of a family injoke going.  Some time back for my mother's... I think 55th birthday, I bought her a gift bag.  It's big, bright green, made of thick plastic - sturdy stuff - and has big yellow smiley faces all over it wearing birthday hats, blowing birthday horns, that kind of thing.  Mom was amused.  Mom's birthday is in June.  Older brother's birthday is in July.  His gift was in that bag.  He passed it on to my sister for her birthday in October.  She sent it on to me in November.  I used it for Dad that Christmas.  Mom's 62nd birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and it's my turn with the bag again! It's held up well through the years and never fails to get laughter whenever someone pops up with it.

Apparently when my husband was a teenager, he and his best friend had a particular Christmas gift bag that they kept giving back and forth to each other for *years*.  Fast forward decades to our wedding day, and guess what we received from the friend?  It was awesome! We still have it. :D
Err on the side of awesome.

Good Lord - I have a bag full of bags. And I save ribbon.

Frankly, in this day and age, wouldn't it be irresponsible NOT to reuse when you could?

It's never occurred to me not to reuse bags. Until they start looking too beat-up.

I reuse any gift bag I have that doesn't have writing on it and any tissue paper or gift box that's not torn up.

I draw the line at reusing wrapping paper because it's torn 99% of the time and creased to boot.

I think used is just fine, obviously. Worn out or torn might show slightly less respect to the recipient, I think.

Same here.

As far as I'm concerned, the entire point of using gift bags in the first place is that they are reusable!

That's why I don't write directly on them, and I tend to go for pretty colors, patterns, and designs rather than something with a printed message.  And I will totally reuse the tissue paper inside too, as long as it's not torn.

POD. My family is very conscious of collecting and reusing gift bags. For me a bigger etiquette question is, does the gift bag now belong to the gift recipient, or should it be handed back to the gift giver? On the surface, as part of the gift, it belongs to the gift recipient; but my mom didn't want to accumulate gift bags so she always pushed them back on the giver. ;)

We are careful with the tissue paper, too (even if we bend or crinkle it on purpose) and often reuse it as well. Of course it doesn't last as long as the bag but you can usually get two or three uses out of the thin, cheap stuff. We also collect and reuse bows and ribbon as long as they look good, but actual wrapping paper tends to get thrown away. I think the wrapping paper only looks good when it's very crisp and fresh (I don't even like transporting wrapped gifts somewhere because the paper gets dinged) whereas the other things can be "gently used" and still look fine to me.

I like to think we aren't crazy about it--we don't freak out or guilt someone if a bow gets thrown away, for example. We also have mainly adults opening gifts, though, who are generally more careful with the resuable components.

I think it's a "know your audience" type of thing. I know some people that would find it tacky and others that would be pleased and thank the re-user if they noticed.

And used tissue paper can be put thru a shredder to make pretty colored packing for gifts so the wrinkles don't matter. Just a thought. :)

Oh yes, that's a good point. Among my parents and I, things can get pretty beat up before we throw it away--I might even have to use a bag already labeled for "Mom" for Dad's gift, and then remember to explain it later. But we are cool with that. For extended family I would reuse a bag if it was still in "very good" condition--I don't want them looking at the bag and thinking, "Hmm, that's odd, is this used?"

My friend Amy gets a perfectly fresh, new bag touched by as few human hands as possible. A new bag from the middle of the rack that hasn't been manhandled by other shoppers or bent in transit. Because Amy notices things like that and is offended.  :P

Reuse any gift bags that still look new provided they're appropriate for the recipient and the occasion.  I wouldn't reuse tissue paper unless it was uncreased (which is highly unlikely).

I buy gift bags and tissue paper in dollar stores so they're not expensive.  I remember one my mother kept for years because it was "list-priced" at $5.  It had never occurred to her to use these because of that.  She felt better when I told her I had bought it in Odd Lot for 69 cents.

I miss those stores.

My BFF, her sister, another friend and I have a gift bag that just goes round in a big circle.  I currently have it; it will go to BFF in July, her sister in August, the other friend in December and back to me in February.  It's great - it means we don't have to worry about wrapping our birthday presents.

I honestly don't care if the rest of the world thinks this is a faux pas, I don't intend to stop doing it.

Gift wrapping is somewhat wasteful and with gift bags you have the beauty of being able to reuse them rather than send them to a landfill and then spend money on new one later when you give a gift.

Not only do I reuse gift bags that are still in good condition, I wrapped my son's birthday gifts with the Sunday comics! They're colorful, and best of all, they're free. Why pay $5 for a roll of wrapping paper that will not last very long?  :P

Definitely reuse bags until they get too worn or beat-up looking, as long as the decoration on the bag is appropriate. I reuse tissue paper, but it gets old and beat-up looking a lot quicker. When it gets too bad, I use it to crumple at the bottom or something.

Yes!  I was just going to pop on to say that.  I had retired my iron years ago, but dusted it off when I heard a neat tip.  Iron your tissue paper!  No matter how creased and crumpled it is, ironing makes it smooth and new-looking.

I then pinch it in the very middle, shake it a bit to encourage a cone shape, and it's perfect to put in a (recycled) gift bag.
