My dad died a week ago today. He loathed funerals and despised memorial services and planned none for himself, but said we - me, my brother, my stepmom Jan and our family's best friend Dolly - could have one or more as we pleased. Jan is having a small service at the mausoleum when my mother's vault is opened to put Dad's "cremains" (he hated that word too) with her. As this is on the opposite coast and I have pressing work committments, and I hate these things as much as Dad, I won't be attending, but told my bro to let me know when it's to be and I'll observe two minutes' silence and say Kaddish for him.

DH and I are hosting a wake next weekend, inviting not only our friends and colleagues who knew my dad but various other friends as well. Among other things, we will have "Weekend At Bernie's" and "Arsenic and Old Lace" on video. I am looking for inappropriate song/music suggestions as well - not just the usual dirty ditties (Dad was in the Army, DH & I in the Navy - we know a bunch of those), but the sort of double-meaning ones we talk about in the Shouldn't Laugh thread. Dad had a sardonic sense of humor, much like mine, and an appreciation of the general irony of life.

As an example, my mom wanted us to sing "The Old Gray Mare" at her wake, plus some of her favorites from high school like "Great Balls of Fire" (she was cremated too). I'm fishing the Don't Laugh thread as well.

Thanks, and every EHellion is cordially invited even if only virtually.

Sorry to hear about your dad.   Truly the first thing that comes to mind is some Monty Python bits.  Was he a fan? I always get a big laugh out of the "Bring out your dead" scene from The Holy Grail movie, or the Dead Parrot Sketch from the Flying Circus series.

I am sorry for your loss.

"Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash?
"Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen?
"I don't mean to be rude", he began, in a tone that threatened rudeness in every syllable.

"--yet sadly, accidental rudeness occurs alarmingly often," Dumbledore finished the sentence gravely.  "Best to say nothing at all."

I'm sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was quite a personality. I'm sure he will be sorely missed.

DH's suggestion was 'Can't touch this."

While typing this, a song called 'Hold my beer(while I kiss your girlfriend)' came on.
I thought - sounds like it might fit!

"Always Look On The Bright Side of Life!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVXR0AKyxA4

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of s**t
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
    (Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
    What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad.   Sounds like a guy I'd really like.

Really, really, inappropriate:     Highway to Hell  -  AC/DC ,   but it could be balanced with Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

I mentioned this to my DH and he adds the following:

Movin' On - Bad Company
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
Vaya Con Dios - Las paul/Mary Ford
Fast Train Down - Waco Brothers
What a Way to Go - Black Toast Music
Road to Nowhere - Ozzy Osbourne
Ashes to Ashes - Tarbox Ramblers
You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - BTO
Don't Look Back - Boston

Only the Good Die Young-Billy Joel

As if the title wasn't bad enough by itself, well, just go find the lyrics.

My favorite line: "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints! The sinners are much more fun!" :)
