A wee thank you
« on: June 09, 2012, 11:56:23 PM »
I haven't been here long but it appears the name 'Etiquette Hell' is a slight misnomer as most post fall outside the parameters of etiquette and more into how to deal with the ever encroaching selfishness of others encountered in everyday life.

I adore this site. I stumbled across it trying to find some resolution to a situation I felt uncomfortable with and after lurking for a bit and reading others insights no longer felt bad about 'disappointing' someone (actually several people) who was clearly just using me for their own gain and at my detriment.

I would just like to say a heartfelt thanks to all members for the sound advice they have given me, even if we may have had different views it was all taken on board and considered in the spirit for which it was intended. It is greatly appreciated.

Oh but I had this wonderful resource 15 years ago.

Dealing with those people is all about etiquette. Etiquette is so much more than which fork to use or how to address an invitation. It's a guideline to dealing with everyone, and especially the selfish or nasty, with grace and politeness while retaining your spine and sanity.

And yes, I agree, that's the wonderful part of this site.

Yes. Well I often hear people say that they have managed to "develop a backbone" and "stopped being a doormat" from reading this site.

Etiquette Hell is sometimes about "what etiquette is",  but even more often it teaches us about "what etiquette is *not*".

The thing with etiquette and "good manners" is that many people grow up with the misconception that when you disappoint someone, no matter how unreasonable and heinous their expectations might be, you are being rude. What we learn here, is that this is not the case.
That it is perfectly possible to stand up for yourself and say "no" without breaking etiquette and without being rude.

It is indeed very insightful and helpful.
