Just curious - why?

I just paid $1.56 / litre in rural Australia.

Tasmania tends to the high rural mainland prices, although I don't tend to pay much attention to petrol prices.  My wee truck* runs on diesel, at the moment here it's around $1.55 per litre.

When I buy petrol, it's for the bike, and I get the premium, so it's usually up around the $1.78 per litre mark.

Hey, it's still cheaper than bottled water.

On vacation 3 weeks ago in the Palm Springs, CA area the cheapest regular gas was $4.10/US gallon - at a Sam's. Elsewhere it was 4.35.

Here in SW Louisiana it's down to $3.17 for regular. Unfortunately, I drive a diesel vehicle. ($3.59, but gets twice the mileage of the gasoline version of my car.)

I paid $3.05 in the southern US today for a gallon of regular unleaded. I try to combine my errands in nearest city with a big shopping plaza (Target, Kohls, ect) because the gas taxes are slightly lower and I sometimes save $0.10 per gallon vs. buying near my home.

Sydney prices are cycling between $1.30 and $1.55 over the course of the week. So you're not that much more expensive.

In Maryland here, it's around $3.45 at the lowest, for regular.

I needed gas while in Brockton, MA last night - it's south of Boston.  The Shell station was charging $3.69/gal. so I turn around and filled up at the Cumberland Farms I'd just driven past.  Their gas was $3.49.  The differences between gas stations can be significant.

The supermarket I use provides substantial discounts on gas, based on how much you spend on groceries. I have gotten several free tanks of gas this year using my discount and rarely spend over $1.80 per gallon.  The same store also gives discounts on groceries based on gas purchases.  Win, win.

Yes, I always laugh when I hear Americans complaining about the price of fuel. Plus, whenever I've been over there, I've noticed that we've actually spent about the same on fuel as we would in the UK because the cars are so heavy on consumption (in general).

I've only driven in Florida in the US, which is flat, straight, paved roads pretty much all the time. I'd wager that about 90% of people on the roads could drive a normal, compact car and it would fit their needs perfectly (and yet 90% of people were in HUGE cars). And even the 15-year old micra I used to have (until about a year ago) got about twice the mileage that the car we rented in Florida did (and that was almost brand new).

West Texas - you know where we drill oil for a freeking living !  And I'm 50 miles from a refinery...

I paid $ 3.38 per gallon yesterday - that is the cheapest in town, average is $ 3.45 per gallon

100 miles north is $ 3.26 per gallon
