Bank Holidays
« on: June 13, 2012, 08:30:07 AM »
It is my understanding that Bank Holidays are used in the UK because there are so few National Holidays.

In the US, We have about ten National Holidays.

New Year's Day
Martin Luther King Day (in most states)
Presidents Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veteran's Day

What determines a Bank Holiday in the UK?

Bank holiday is just the term for an official day off. We get eight normally:

New Years Day
Good Friday
Easter Monday
Early May bank holiday (first Monday in May)
Late May bank holiday (last Monday in May, but this year moved to first Monday in June plus an extra day off on Tuesday, due to Queen's Jubilee)
August bank holiday (last Monday in August)
Christmas Day
Boxing Day

Scotland gets an extra day off for January 2 too.

Scotland don't have one of the other bank Holidays though, so it still works out the same

Your National Holidays are our Bank Holidays (may be on different days or for different reasons) but the sentiment behind them are the same just different names

Here a bank holiday is defined by a day that the Government employees will get off but not anyone else. (But we all used to)
IE Easter Monday and Rememberance day.
