S/O Classic movies you don't get: Performers you don't get
« on: June 14, 2012, 06:31:00 PM »
So, I seem to be addicted to the movies/entertainment threads here. The classic movies thread got me thinking about performers I just don't see the draw for. Here's mine. (I think a lot of my attitude comes from their personal behavior off-screen).

In no particular order:

Leo DiCaprio (hated the fictional love story in Titanic and was unimpressed to read he thought he should have gotten the Oscar for it; hated him in Man in the Iron Mask -- lousy acting)

Faye Dunaway -- just such a diva and I can't recall anything I've seen her in that I liked.

Alec Baldwin -- Ditto (is a male "diva" a "divo"?)

Charlie Sheen -- Why all the attention for a train wreck waiting to happen?

Orson Welles -- Hated Citizen Kane.

Stanley Kubrick: (Okay he's a director but hated A Clockwork Orange and anything else he's done).

Anyone connected in any way with the TV show, "The View".

May he rest in peace, but Michael Jackson

That's just for starters.

Your turn....

Scarlett Johanson - she can't act, has no chemistry with any of her costars, and has no discernible personality. A triple threat. She's not even pretty enough to compensate.

I suppose this is just because of my personality (I'm definitely not a night owl) but:

Leno, Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan etc.: They are on waaay past my bedtime, especially on weeknights. Do THAT many people stay up THAT late to watch them? How do they function the next day?

Jim Carrey-He's just not funny. Why do so many people like him?
Jerry Lewis-Same as above.
Madonna-Narcissist, mediocre singer, exhibitionist.
Lady GaGa-Same as above.
Audrey Hepburn-Boring.
Chris Noth-Don't see what others do-I don't think he's good looking or a good actor.
Alec Baldwin-How annoying!
Melanie Griffith-Terrible, awful actress and comes across as really dumb.

What have you got? Is it food? Is it for me? I want it whatever it is!

Russell Crowe.  ::ducks from thrown tomatoes::  He's got the same, slightly vapid expression every time I see him.

Jessica Biel, Megan Fox.  They have the same mannequin-like face.

I'm sure I could think of more, or Pod some others.

I liked Jim Carrey when he first started out, but then I was a preteen-teen so my sense of humor wasn't mature yet and his mugging hadn't quite started to get on my nerves yet.

Tom Cruise.  There are two movies I can stand him in.  Top Gun and A Few Good Men.  And Top Gun I really only watch it for Goose.

George Clooney.
Brad Pitt

Don't hate me, I just am not all that attracted to them. I see their appeal, but they don't do it for me.

Keanu Reeves.  Really the only thing I liked him in was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure because it was so cheesy that it didn't matter that they couldn't act.

POD Keanu Reeves. A potato could emote more than he could.

Katharine Hepburn - Don't know how anyone could find her watchable ever.

*Snort!* I have to admit I did think he was cute when I was a teen and "Speed" came out.  I am so ashamed... :-[

Katharine Hepburn. I don't think that she's that great of an actress.

POD Keanu Reeves. I only watch Devil's Advocate to watch Al Pacino chew scenery.

Most of Marlon Brando's stuff. He had no concept of where his actual talents lay (i.e., not Mutiny on the Bounty or Mark Antony in Julius Caesar). I love The Godfather though.

I'm okay with Michael Jackson when he sang with the Jackson Five, but his more mature stuff just doesn't appeal to me.

I mostly agree with Tom Cruise - although I thought he was good in Tropic Thunder.  It makes me wonder if he might be good in Rock of Ages.

Alec Baldwin in real life and in any drama - in comedy (especially 30 Rock) I like him.

I used to love Harrison Ford in anything - now I have little interest in anything he is in.

I agree with the Madonna Lady GaGa thing.  The fact that somebody calls themselves GaGa alone...

Frank Sinatra. I don't like his singing. It just doesn't sound good to me. I don't get what everyone else thinks is so wonderful.

Most of the above plus...

Julia Roberts.  Hit and miss performances and she is not that beautiful.

Angelina Jolie, same comments.

Adam Lambert because I like men to look and sound like men.

Mickey Rooney, who is annoying.

Kristen Stewart because she is so wooden I don't see any real talent.

Roseanne Barr, whom I find offensive.

A lot of today's performers because they're all young  (with notable exceptions.)  I don't like watching 20-something performers all the time, especially when I consider that my car is almost as old as a lot of them (a bit of an exaggeration, but not much; my car is a 1995.)  Let's see a few more in the 40+ range.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - enough already!

Let's see.

POD on Keanu Reeves.  Mike Nelson once wrote that you could tape a two-by-four onto the screen wherever Reeves appears and enjoy improved acting.

I do not understand at all the fascination with Johnny Depp.  Same with Orlando Bloom.  Get those boys a sandwich, PLEASE.

George Clooney.  If I want to look at a fellow with pretty eyes, I'll watch something with Sean Connery in it.  At least Connery's got something behind them.

Russell Crowe.  I keep wanting to reach into the screen and tell him to speak up.

Oh, and anything named "Kardashian" is a source of endless puzzlement to me.  Is there a reason I should care about which one is which, much less which one is doing what?
