Good theater goers
« on: June 15, 2012, 11:48:34 AM »
Since we often have posts about rude and inconsiderate theater goers, I thought I'd share something nice for a change.

Mrs.k2002 and I saw The Addams Family last night, and nobody misbehaved! The cell phones and other electronics were turned off when the lights went off and stayed off (we were in the back so would have noticed if any had come on.) Nobody fiddled with candy wrappers or held noticeable conversations during the show. Lots of people dressed up, but even those who didn't were at least presentable. There were few late arrivals, seated during a break in the action, and nobody was late coming back from intermission.

One other thing made me think of eHell last night: I won't spoil it, but one of the central conflicts is a topic that has been discussed with some heat here. No, not shopping carts or shoes off in the home. The show is hilarious and I recommend it.

The fact that your experience was so exceptional that you were compelled to post about it here is pretty interesting. I haven't been to a movie at a movie theatre in years. Definitely over five years, probably around seven. It's just not worth it anymore.

I wonder if a lot of bad behavior in theatres can be attributed to the accessibility of watching movies at home. We sort of got used to answering our phone, talking out loud, etc. in our home watching and maybe forget that when we're in a theatre we need to be consious that we are not in our living rooms.

In addition to that, the amount of preshow advertising and the sheer cost of a movie & snacks which has gone sky high has kept me at home. Plus a big screen TV & surround sound.

lowspark, while I agree with you, I should point out that in this case The Addams Family is live theater, not the movie with Raul Julia.

We're talking about The Addams Family here. Snakes in a restaurant wouldn't be controversial at all. Of course you bring your pet cobra with you, when you're an Addams!

The pre-show announcement was funny. "Please turn off all electronic devices and unwrap any candy now. The use of knives, guns, flails and other instruments of torture is forbidden during the show. They are, however, acceptable during intermission. Thank you."

Duh. I shoulda known that. I actually saw the play several months ago. It was good. I just wasn't paying attention to what show you mentioned.

I do think people tend to be better behaved in a live theatre situation than in a movie.

I love that. My favorite pre-show announcement was from a production of [title of show] that I was in. "...and if you would like to enjoy a hard candy or a lozenge during the performance, please unwrap it now......and suck it."
Most people look at musical theatre and think "Why are those people singing and dancing in the street?" I'm sort of the opposite. I see a street full of people and think, "Why aren't they?"
