Almost Uproar in the Potatoes

(1/4) > >>

January Girl:
Let me just say, I love grocery shopping. I have my coupons, my list...I'm in the ZONE. I might be the minority, but I hey, everyone has a vice.

So off I skipped to my grocery store. I was in a chipper mood. As I rolled over to the produce section I saw a woman I recognized.

A friend of mine is a physical therapist. This particular woman had a stroke at a young age (41) and lost a lot of mobility and brain function. Friend became her PT after the stroke and worked with her extensively to gain back what she lost. Friend and I were at dinner when this woman came in with her husband. Friend introduced me to them and told then me the woman's story. This woman now functions much better, but still needs the help of an aide when out.

When I went to the produce section, Stroke Woman was a few racks over, so I walked over to the potato bin. There was a large bin of melons on the other side, so there was no way to get 2 carts through. I pushed my car as far against the bin as possible, so at least one person could pass, but not with a cart. No one was around, just me and my potatoes.

I didn't realize she had come up behind me and was using the scale. Just as I looked up a different woman in scrubs was huffing at me. She looked at me and said "Well, I guess I'll have to go around then!" Whaaaat?? Long story short, Scrubs Woman was Stroke Woman's aide. I had no idea and when I was at the potato bin there was no one around.

I overheard Scrubs woman tell Stroke Woman, "People like that infuriate me. They have no respect for the disabled."  :o
Excuse me, baking soda? There was no one around when she said it, so clearly it was aimed at me. I was perfectly fine with my potatoes.

Rather than starting Potato World War III, I let it go. Scrubs woman was kind enough to shoot me evil daggers all through the store when she saw me. I responded with a huge smile.

Somehow, we ended up in the foyer together as we walked to our carts. With sweetness dripping from my voice and a huge smile, I looked at Scrubs woman and said "People like you who assume I have no respect for the disabled make me sad. I have respect for everyone. What an interesting assumption you made about me."  >:D The shocked look on her face was beyond priceless.

Thanks EHell.

Moray:
I was with you up until your last paragraph.

The interaction was over and (initially, at least) you responded with grace. Your "parting shot" brought you down to her level and strikes me as retaliatory rudeness.

portabella:
Just to backtrack, earlier when she was shooting you daggers or even as soon as she made her remark about 'no respect for disabled', you should have said "Sorry, but I didn't realize anyone was using the scale."  It would then have been up to her to respond, apologixe, shrug it off or whatever.

Your parting shot in the foyer was uncalled for, imo.

Pod.  This would been the best response to her rudeness.

well, i probably wouldn't have delivered the "parting shot" myself, but i can certainly understand why you did since she continued to shoot you death glares every time your paths crossed throughout your shopping trip in the store.

and maybe it will cause her to rethink her behavior.  if she can't resist making the odd snarky comment in the produce department, she should certainly put whoever she commented upon on studious ignore throughout the rest of the trip.

i'm still not getting her comment.  even though Aide was in scrubs, how were you supposed to know a) that Stroke Woman was disabled (if you hadn't met her previously), and b) how were you supposed to know that Aide was SW's aide, and not just someone who works in a hospital or doctor's office who was doing her shopping on her way to/from work?
