Replacing a borrowed helmet

I think it's absolutely fair. You shouldn't be out of pocket anything at all.
Great update and it sounds as though the friend also thought it was perfectly fair.
(I probably would not have mentioned to the friend that I'd got it on clearance for $80, but rather jumped right to, "Oh, a new one costs $160) to avoid conflict should the friend turn out to be cheap and a poor borrower.
Redsoil:
Good news that he's buying you a new one. I don't lend my helmets - it can change the way they "fit" your head - not a good thing. I tend to favour Shoei - a good helmet is well worth extra cost!
Lynnv:
I am with everyone else. He owes you a new helmet to replace the one that did what it was supposed to do-protected his head in a wreck. Even though you got a smoking deal and can't find the same deal, that doesn't mean he doesn't need to replace your helmet. Since there is no way to buy a used helmet, then a new one of the same brand, style and (when possible) model is what he owes.
And it sounds like he understands that.
Perhaps, when he asked how much it cost, you should have (in that mythological perfect world) said, "$80, but I am not sure if I can find it that cheaply now." But that is a stretch. And you really had no way of knowing that until you looked around.
I can say with confidence that it would cost more than I spent on it originally to replace either of my helmets. And if someone borrowed one and then wrecked, basically ruining it, they would owe me the equivalent new helmet-not just what I spent on it in the first place.
Hopefully he is now buying TWO new helmets. Since he knows that yours protected his head in the wreck, he should realize the value of having something between his head and the pavement other than whatever hair product he uses.

I'm parking a POD here, Redsoil. Nobody wears my helmet but me.
And yes, if I was in Friend's place, I'd firstly never have bought a bike without buying a helmet, and secondly, I'd be replacing the helmet I'd ruined, regardless of the cost.
Good luck OP!

I think there is nothing wrong in saying "Friend, when you asked me how much the helmet cost, I said $80 because that is what I spent. I got it on an awesome clearance sale. However, you can appreciate that I want the helmet replaced with a comparable one, regardless of the price. I should not have to pay because I was nice enough to lend you a helmet. That being said, I think the helmet that would be similar these days is the XYZ Helmet. I need a new one by next Friday."
