Replacing a borrowed helmet
Roe:
Send him a link to the helmet you want (same one he ruined) and let him eat the cost. You shouldn't be out of pocket a cent.
still in va:
he damaged the helmet that you had. he needs to replace the helmet that you had. doesn't matter what it costs to replace it. he broke it, he buys it.
USC_Gamecock:
I would be honest about the price difference and explain that you got the helmet at a super-steal price and unfortunately, that price is no longer available. Hopefully, DH's friend will step up and offer to replace the helmet (with one of same style and make) regardless of the price. It's obvious that you aren't trying to pull a fast one. I'd put the ball in Friend's court and see how he responds.
WillyNilly:
He borrowed a helmet. Not cash. He needs to give you back an equal helmet, not the cash price you paid for it. Because honestly even if he gave you $300 cash its not a helmet - that's making you go out and shop out of your time and your effort and that's not ok.
Your helmet protected him a crash. The damage done to your helmet could have been his skull. Your loan saved his brain, possibly his whole life as he knows it. Replacing your helmet is the very absolute least he could do for you.

Well said.
And he should be glad he didn't borrow a helmet from myself or my husband - the cheapest helmet we own was still well over $250 new, and the one I've been wearing for the last couple of years was about $500. Personally, I've never seen a helmet for less than $200 that I would trust to protect me should I be involved in a motorcycle accident, so I'm amazed that you've found one for $160 new in the first place. :) He should thank his lucky stars to get off so inexpensively!
