Made Up Words You'd Like to See Stick Around
« on: July 15, 2012, 10:31:29 AM »
On another forum, I saw the word generfusity  today- it was in reference to PA gifts that were is for "when someone passive-aggressively (not just mistakenly) spends a lot of money (or otherwise does something "kind" for you) on something that's what they think you should want rather than what they know you do want.", so, it is like generosity, but with an "FU" in the middle.  >:D >:D

What other made up words have people seen that they enjoy?

I don't even remember where I heard this one, but in reference to the plastic divider that one puts between orders at the grocery store to separate one person's groceries from another... I always now find myself referring to it as the "food fender".  Never heard it yet from others, but to me it has an appealing ring to it.

(And now they've started putting advertising sleeves on the aforementioned "food fenders" at my local supermarket.  I don't know whether to be disgusted at yet more advertising or admiring of the person who first thought of this!)

Many years ago, Douglas Adams (of Hitchiker fame) also wrote a book called "The Meaning of Liff".

In the book, he takes unusual place names and makes up what *he* thought their definitions should be.

My favourite by far was "Minchinghampton" - the look on a gentleman's face when he has zipped up his trousers without due care and attention.

Do you guys remember Sniglets? SNL stuff? http://bit.ly/IxuuW
I still use a lot of those words in the books.
Like, nevitts for cat tongue roughness. Table snorkling when you eat something too hot and have to cover your mouth and breathe to cool it off.

My parents had those books, got rid of them. Darnit.

I saw someone use the word Snorgle in reference to a cute kitty belly picture on Ehell. Snorgle is now part of my normal vocabulary.  ;D

A friend's word for a lot of something is "beaucouptudinous." I use it a lot.

I scare easily when I'm riding shotgun in a car, because I'm not inside the driver's head, so I'm totally unaware he's about to pass that slow car in front of us ... all I see is our car closing in on it at a rapid rate and ohmygoodnesswe'regoingtocrash! I call this "passengeranoia."

Craptastic, is a favorite, as is "ginormous" - I just think they're fun to say, and don't really add much to the English language that wasn't there already.
What part of v_e = \sqrt{\frac{2GM}{r}} don't you understand? It's only rocket science!

I use confuzzled too. And when my cousins and I were growing up we also used "Spiffy" "Nifty" and "Nifty-cool" to basically mean something was awesome
