I have a dear friend who I keep in touch with via text and fb messaging.  Our messages frequently just consist of "Hi :)"

It's very comforting to both of us. <3

That's probably because you've ... actually met before. It doesn't exactly give one a ton to go on when that's the full extent of your communication.  ;D
